Nice Attacker Described As "Petty Criminal"
NICE, France (AP) Two French police officials say identity papers found alongside the suspected attacker in last night's truck rampage in Nice belonged to a 31-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian descent.
The man had previous misdemeanor convictions but no known link to extremist groups.
Authorities are working to fully verify his identity.

France was ravaged by its third attack in two years when a large white truck mowed through revelers gathered for Bastille Day fireworks in Nice, killing at least 84 people as it bore down on the crowd for more than a mile along the Riviera city's famed seaside promenade.
The attack Thursday night on France's national holiday rocked a nation still dealing with the aftermath of attacks in November in Paris that killed 130 and in January 2015 that killed 17.
Police killed the driver "apparently after an exchange of gunfire," Eric Ciotti, the ranking politician of the Alpes-Maritime department that includes Nice, told BFM television.
The truck plowed into the crowd over a distance of two kilometers (about 1.2 miles), he said, and broadcast footage showed a scene of horror up and down the promenade, with broken bodies splayed out on the asphalt.
Last year I read an article about how ISIS and other terrorist groups are filled with psychopaths , alcoholics, drug addicts and other social misfits and violent nihilists. One of the founders of ISIS was a career criminal before he got involved in this "religious" endeavor. I didn't save the article and will have to try and find it to give a link.
There are and have been experts that advocate treating ISIS like we would treat organized crime like the Mafia or a drug cartel. Not that our efforts to stop the Mafia or drug cartels have been that effective, but I think it would give it a better focus than blaming religion. If mentally deranged people take over a religion they are still mentally deranged.
"he ISIS propaganda machine has been pushing a very specific image, one of strict adherence to Sharia Law. Sharia Law contains the religious and morale codes of conduct for followers of Islam. These codes are often brutally enforced by ISIS, and those things deemed Haram (sinful or forbidden) are not tolerated.
Falling under the category of Haram are those items considered to be intoxicants, such as alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. The Islamic State has made a very public display of carrying out a strong anti-drug policy. Videos on Youtube uploaded by ISIS show militants burning captured marijuana fields, destroying bottles of liquor and drug paraphernalia, etc.

On October 11 , the Mirror reported that dead ISIS rebels in the town of Kobani had been found with pills in their possession.
Ekram Ahmet, a Kurd who fled Kobani with his family, told Mirror : “They are filthy, with straggly beards and long black nails.”
“They have lots of pills with them that they all keep taking. It seems to make them more crazy if anything.”"
No mention of his name. Strange.
Just another random guy on the JV team Obama couldn't be bothered with.
Terrorism is on the run, you know.
Your obsession with blaming Democrats is pathological in itself.
NBC News said he is a Tunisian born "loner" who is described as "not particularly religious".
Did he do this in the name of Allah Sean, or did he do it because he is a mentally unhinged nihilist?
When a guy shouts "Allah Akbhar" right before he's killed by police in a gunfight, I think his motive is pretty clear.
The Joker could shout "God Bless America" as he was shooting and bombing people. Would that mean he was doing it for America?
John, i truly do not understand you twisting and turning to avoid the fact that these islamic terrorists are in fact doing these horrific acts of terror in the name of their god. Even when the terrorists say it, out loud and for all to hear, you still have to spin their own words to try to mean something else. I used to get irritated when i read your posts, now i really worry that you are seriously delusional.
Probably a Jane Fonda wannabe.
You probably have a shallow reading list Jennilee. What can I say? True religious Muslims would not do some of the things these people do.
Thanks Ayatollah John. Any other fatwas you care to issue on what makes someone a "true Muslim?"
The arrogance of American liberals in claiming the right to define who is and isn't a true Muslim is breathtaking. No wonder they hate the US so much.
I'm just listening to NBC News describe him as a violent loner with financial problems. Yes, he imitated terrorist attacks. That doesn't make him ISIS or someone who is a religious fanatic.
All you want to do is blame Obama and Clinton.
You probably have a shallow reading list Jennilee.
John,
Whatever you believe makes NewsTalkers less than an ideal site, does not hold a candle to these types of responses.

That would be the LAST tweet to the hashtag you suggested . Well, the one and only one actually.
is that you?
The neighbors of the murderous truck driver say he was not a religious person. Do you think he committed this act as a religious Muslim?
By the way Jonathan, since you want to insert your snark into this discussion, this is what Jennilee said to me

I didnt twist or turn anything. There are a lot of people, experts, who say that ISIS is not representative of the vast majority of Muslims. In this particular case today, the news reports describing the killer say he was not known as a radical Muslim or religious at all.

It doesn't matter whether he was religious or not. The people that he killed were not "his people". They were the "other". They were celebrating the anniversary of their freedom, and he murdered them for it. His people are the enemy of freedom, progress and democracy. Call it whatever you want, but they don't have to be religious to be our enemies. The day you get that through your apologist head is the day we can move on.
This was nihilism expressed through a deranged mind. Yes, he imitated terrorism. Maybe he wanted to get on tv.
Fine. Move along. Pretend that this is a one-off, disconnected assault. Nothing to worry about.
Put your head back in the sand.
Although Nice-Matin published the suspected assailant's name, The Washington Post has been unable to confirm the name or other details of the attacker's identity.
French news agencies said the man had not been known to intelligence agencies, but had a record for petty crime.
If those reports prove accurate, they would be in line with the profile of the killers in previous major terrorist attacks in France and Belgium over the past two years.
Many had records for violence or petty criminal convictions and while some were on the radar of intelligence services monitoring radical networks, others had been relative unknowns until they struck.
