Being a not-so-rugged-anymore individualist myself, I don't think this is right... I mean, it took a lot of guts to become a geologist, back in the 1970s. There was one other woman, Margaret, who was an oil geologist, and I loved her. She died early, a couple of years after I met her, of a heart attack... Funny, how I didn't take that as a warning sign!
I don't know... To me, the right has moved too far right and the left has moved too far left. Being an in-the-middle kind of person, I think we all need some common sense!
There are a lot of people that claim to be libertarian, when they haven't a clue what a real American Libertarian actually is or what they believe in.
The same goes with those who ridicule American Libertarians, they also haven't a clue what a real American Libertarian is or what they believe.
The difference between them?
There is none.
The claimers, want the same things the ridiculing people want, absolute power on their side of the political spectrum.
An American Libertarian wants neither power to wield over others, nor power wielded over them.
They establish the rule of law that everyone can choose to, or choose not to live by.
All others wish to bend the law to suit their own selfish ends.
The American Libertarian wants to be left alone to be an American. Doesn't want to stick his nose in anyone else's business and doesn't want anyone else's business forced upon him. He just wants to live his life in peace.
In that vein, we walk softly and carry a big stick. We expect our leaders to lead, our representatives to represent and for everyone to do the job they chose for themselves in society without effecting others and always allowing others to do the same. To the best of our/their abilities.
WE do not want a fight with anyone, but will not back down when confronted with a fight as the last alternative.
And we always win the fights we choose to fight.
The Libertarian party does not speak for me, WHY? cause they are no more real American Libertarians than the Republican/Democrats that ridicule them.
You can be a republican/democrat and still be an American Libertarian.
American Libertarianism is not a political ideology, it is a way of life.
AND, if followed, creates the strongest most successful human society ever seen on the face of the planet.
Someday, the forces of destruction that now fight for political ascendancy in our nation will realize this and come to their senses.
Until then, we are on the pathway to our own destruction, with no way off the path.

Well, the average man (people-person?) in the street in most parties is usually an asshole anyway. The only way to tell is by the leader of their party-- the one they nominate for pres.
In this case, as usual, it was a typical Libertarian-- exempifying the highest virtues of the party. This year it was Gary "What is Aleppo" Johnson

There is no such things as an American without an American government. Modern interconnected societies cannot be "libertarian" , that ship sailed after the Civil War. Maybe you will stumble upon a time machine though so you can travel back a couple centuries and be happy.
Maybe you missed this.... (actually I'm sure you either missed this or are ignoring it)

To have leaders that lead, and representatives that represent, we HAVE to have a strong government. The founders understood this implicitly. The problem comes when you have a faction that thinks government is the end all and be all of a nation.
Like you do.
Fortunately, the founders disagreed with that sentiment.
A government does not make a nation, it's citizens do. And a government can only function by the consent of the governed. Now, admittedly, that consent can be obtained in a number of ways. But the way the Founders choose was assent of the citizenry, not the power of government.
Yes we need a government to handle the business of government, but in today's world it is the government that decides what it's business is, not the citizens. and when the citizens object, they are forced to heel to the government.
That is not the government that the fathers of this nation created.
When God gave out brains, she somehow missed the Libertarians!
They try harder.
Liberals and progressives have always shared an intolerance for limited government and a dislike of rugged individualism.

How else to explain the sheer contempt expressed here for a widespread all American political belief system?

Oh please XX, those two comments are pure nonsense.

In other words-- a total moron!
'Nuff said!
And the libertarian party does not represent all libertarians, not even most libertarians.
They can afford to be morons cause they know this and repeatedly refuse to adjust their positions to be representative of more people.
Which makes them even more representative of political morons.
Never been a member of the libertarian party. I would never stoop to that level.
