Reed, for many years was a relative unknown. Recently his photographs of various tribes, has been compared to Curtis. From his background and how he went about it, I favor Reed.
Portraiture in any medium is more than capturing likeness; what makes a great portrait is the artist's ability to capture a moment when the subject is being his/her "characteristic" self when facial expression and body language come together to give viewers an insight into the person and not only a look at his/her exterior.
There has long been a controversy regarding Curtis's photo as being staged. Same with Reed, IMO I still think that in most of them they did capture the real self.
Thank you SO MUCH for turning us on to that magnificent portfolio of photographs. My only question (which you might not be able to answer) is whether the colour photos were colourized, since I didn't think colour film existed back then.

I wasn't being critical just informative.
I like these -- their formality create an elegance whether or not they appear, or, were intended to appear formal rather than intimate.
I didn't think that you were being critical at all Mac.
My comment was referring to the debate that went on for years about both Reeds and Curtis worked being staged.
I love the "fuzziness" of the pictures-- almost as if they were standing in a cloud... I wonder what he used as a filter?
