By the time 2021 rolls around, a number of major car makers will have a varied selection of electric cars available . Developments in battery technology will dictate the range and features that these cars can offer, but Samsung wants to give consumers a brief insight into what will be available at the start of the next decade.
Samsung SDI, the Korean conglomerate's lithium ion and renewable division that provides power for auto giant BMW, today announced a "next generation" battery that offers 600 kilometers (373 miles) of driving and can be "fast charged" in just 20 minutes.
370 miles on a twenty-minute charge.
That is a game-changer. Cross-country travel is quite reasonable.
Just thinking about the refuel-recharge time difference and its effects. I assume recharging stations would require 3 or 4 times the space to accommodate the number of stationary cars for the increased times for recharging.
Interesting observation, Buzz.
Gas station pumps don't take much space, and a car only stops for a few minutes. So even if a charge only takes 20 minutes, we're looking at maybe five times as much space required. Then again, pump positions are always drive-through, while charging stations are usually "parking places", which require less space than drive-through.
You're right that space is a consideration we don't usually think of.
The car appears to have some safety issues though.
Samsung.....Hmmmm...they have some image issues to overcome.....but it is interesting. The vast majority of my road trips rarely exceed 300 miles. Good to see the technology move forward.
