Has Anybody Here Driven This Car - Besides Me?

Has Anybody Here Driven This Car - Besides Me?

1424_discussions.jpg No, I'm not a chauffeur. But there is a story to this. Two very good folksinger friends of mlne were getting married and I thought of this as being a great experience for them. I happened to have a client who owned a famous French restaurant in Toronto, and he actually owned a Rolls Royce, identical to this one, which was in turn identical to the one driven in the classic film "The Yellow Rolls Royce". I borrowed his car in order to drive the bride and groom around the town on the way to and from the church where they were married. It almost stopped traffic as I drove, and people stopping in their tracks to stare at us. The car was really something else to drive - it had to be double clutched and now I can't even remember what that meant, but I was able to manage it. When it was parked in front of the church it gathered a crowd, but I had to unscrew and hide the silver "winged lady" radiator cap when I parked it so it wouldn't be stolen.

I was wearing a black East Indian style tuxedo with a fisherman's cap on my head. The bride was wearing a white and gold sari while the groom just wore a sports jacket. Everyone at the wedding thought I was the groom. It's quite a memory.

Okay, here's another one of my classic car stories to add. When I was 15 years old we lived around the corner from a Sunoco gas station. I had just started to drive and was in love with driving, as you can imagine a 15 year old would be. Those were the days in 1952 when gas was 42 cents a gallon Canadian money. Once in a while the gas station had a car on their lot for sale. One day a 1937 maroon Packard limousine hit the lot. It was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. I was just taking driving lessons then on a steering mounted stick shift Studebaker, so I knew how to shift gears. They wanted 900 bucks for the car. If I could have sold my drool over that car I could have earned that much. Unfortunately my father wouldn't budge to buy a car for me then, it was the next year that he bought me a used 1950 Ford Custom Tudor. Well, that wasn't so bad but I sure as hell had eyes for that Packard. It looked like this, only all maroon. The interior was like the pictures below, although it was original and showed a little wear.

Never saw a Darrin before. Does it sing "Diana"? Thanks, by the way, for filling me in about "Three on the tree". I couldn't think of the proper way to describe the steering column mounted stick shift on my 1950 Ford Custom Tudor.

Do you mean do I wish I still had the 1950 Ford? Yeah, but the next car I owned was a graduation gift from my father - a black 1959 Pontiac Parisienne convertible. (Parisienne was a Canadian model similar to the American Bonneville)

1429_discussions.jpg 1430_discussions.jpg This is the identical car, even the top and the upholstery, to the one I had. I even think that's an Ontario licence plate on the car.

There are a lot of Ford Focus cars in China. The Taurus was Ford's largest model, but the Falcon was smaller.

I was feeling a bit nostalgic lately, so I thought I would look back at some of the articles I posted on Newstalkers at least a couple of years ago, most of which were written by me and all have many photographs, and thought that perhaps some new members who have not delved back into the archives might enjoy seeing. Ive chosen one each from different groups where I have been posting over the years: Classic Car Collectors Corner; Anishinaabe - the First People; Discovery Group, Creative Arts; and Canada, the True North Strong and Free. In the comments, sometimes it will look as if Im talking to myself, but that is because the other persons who posted must have deleted their NT accounts and that will automatically delete their comments.Anyway, here is one of the articles.

Dear Friend Buzz: Looks great. Never drove one.

My ride is a 2001 Rolls Canardly. It rolls down one hill, and canardly get up the next.

It features factory installed dents. Power gas usage. A GPS system whose voice response to any directional inquiry is, "You can't get there from here". It has four quadruped tires. There are at least seven lame horses under the hod.

Stylin!

E.

A Chevy more or less close to the vintage of my first Pontiac convertible. (I can't open the second photo). Fins were the rage back then.

What fun to drive!

I loved that movie, "The Yellow Rolls Royce", and to see one in real life, much less drive it, must have been very exciting!

Wonderful article, Buzz!
