Is it Time for that "Cigar"

If you've been following my efforts to capture photos of birds in flight, I've been coming closer to winning that metaphorical "cigar" … I may have just won the damned thing … but, you tell me .

"Close but no cigar"

From the practice of giving cigars as prizes at  carnivals  in the US in the 19th century;

this phrase would be said to those who failed to win a prize.
