On the other hand we may just be figments of a vastly superior race's imagination, each one of us a "plaything" produced as images by the telepathic brainpower that is so vast that is is beyond our ability to comprehend. In other words we are like computer game characters being played by those vastly superior beings - we don't exist in reality but in another's imagination. How do you like MY theory, Krishna?
Actually the original ones were a bit more of a "scientific" sort of speculation. The one you suggested is a little more metaphysical or philosophical.
1. Some "New Age" philosophies say that the Universe is all an illusion-- a sort of Hologram projected by our minds. That there's nothing really out there-- its all an illusion
Consciousness
We exist in a matrix, simulation, hologram, or virtual programmed reality that we believe is real because our brains tell us it is. (Cont'd)
2. And branches of Hinduism talk about Maya-- the veil of illusion:
Phew! My brain can't process all of that and I only got so far. I liked this statement because it sort of complied with my theory:
"Are humans living in a simulation?"
Although that series of articles is way more advanced than my limited knowledge can process, the part dealing with electrical stimulation of part of the brain made me think of the experiments carried our by the brilliant Dr. Wilder Penfield at the Montreal Neurological Institute, although they were more involved with memory. With the patient awake and part of the scalp removed, he applied electrical stimulation to certain places on the brain and the patient who was awake said that they listened to the whole of the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. In other words they had total perfect recall of something that they had experienced previously.

Nah, we're just plugged into the Matrix while machines use our bodies for power. So "reality" is just a complex computer simulation. Watch out for those moments of deja-vu.
There are many probable reasons why we haven't found extraterrestrial life. We send out radio signals but we have only had the ability to receive radio signals for a little over 100 years so many aliens might not be listening and any that are might suspect that we might be fishing for Worlds to Conquer (would we answer? would that be wise?). Maybe they've gotten our messages and are on their way right now in their battle cruisers to conquer us. Maybe they've already come and gone, any alien life advanced enough to make it here would be smart enough to study earth under strict quarantine and avoid detection. Just look at all the problems we're having with invasive species from other continents imagine the risks of this happening across worlds. Also any aliens advanced enough to get here and study us would quickly understand that we as a species are not capable of coexisting with a species that is smarter and possibly more powerful. Our Leaders would become paranoid and attack. The fact is the more they know about us the more reasons they have to avoid us like the Plague or to destroy us before we become powerful enough to be a threat to them.
I think they have already found us, and they are actively infiltrating our brains to guide us into mass extinction at our own hands, so that they may come in afterwards and take the planet for their own. How else can you explain Trump supporters?
It seems to me the most likely explanation is that of distance. We're just too far away from other civilizations to have received any indication of their existence, and vice versa. And by the time any indication can be received, those civilizations sadly may no longer exist, as ours may no longer exist by the time any other civilization is aware of us. We are limited by the speed of light, and the speeds we have and will achieve in space travel.
The likelihood of us finding intelligent life in the universe is probably less than the likelihood that two flies on opposite sides of the planet would live long enough to find each other, assuming that they had any idea where to go. Their lives are too short and the distance is too vast. On the other hand, maybe the aliens are flies and we keep killing them when they try to communicate by buzzing around.
So now you know

Excellent!
(At least as good as the others proposed here).

I'm reminded of the Drake Equation .
Its really rather fascinating the amount of interesting things that are on the Internet...if you avoid all the mindless political chatter!
Time wasters perhaps-- but often amusing.
Here's another I just came across:
Brain Teaser

Fascinating question.
Theories abound.
Equally interesting.
E.

We are alone until proven otherwise. Belief in other advanced civilizations in other galaxies is sort of like belief in God.
No belief is required. The probability of other civilizations is mathematically plausible and likely.
That's simple.
If you were an alien - would you really want us to find you?
Well . . . finally . . . the truth about life on other planets has finally been revealed!
Aliens are eating people in Arizona!
If they are here, they are so much ahead of us we can't tell.

I'm pretty confident the Kardashians are.
