Iconography , the science of identification, description, classification, and interpretation of symbols, themes, and subject matter in the visual arts. The term can also refer to the artist's use of this imagery in a particular work.
What it implies to me is what SHOULD have been carved out of that particular sacred rock face, rather than what WAS. I think Kavika feels the same way as I do .
In addition, the faded images further imply a lost past that would stay lost in the past unless resurrected and preserved through art ... an editorial image like the one we're analyzing which thus makes it Art that advocates Art itself as a vehicle to squaring historical unfairness and injustices to a People.
While a lasting monument would not erase the injustices of history, it would at least acknowledge they occurred and imply what should not be repeated.
By the way, if you have knowledge of Classic Movies, the latest article I posted on Classic Cinema was an identification challenge using symbols for the titles or incidents or images in the movies. I cannot use quotations or prints from the movies because of recognition programs or apps that some members have used. After 10 hours nobody even ventured to try, so I'm somewhat disappointed for having put in as much effort as I did to produce the contest.
Do you have to be a member? When I went over to take a look at it, there was no way to participate. 30 photos and pictures, but no reply buttons or any way I could see to participate, although they may be to my advantage, because I'm not very good at that sort of thing.
I don't even see a way to join if you have to join. I'm going back now to verify what I've said here.
No, I don't see any way to participate on your article.
Yes you have to be a member of the group and I gues you are not. Just open the group front page, and it will have a question on top about whether you want to apply for membership. Just apply and you are automatically accepted as a member, then the comments under the artilcle will open up. Al-316 already used it okay.

Thank you; some art makes statements, other art raises questions ... and some seems to do both; what I find intriguing is that the Q>A sequence can flip flop to A>Q.
An ICON is a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something …
Significant and powerful. A very meaningful image.
Actually it gives me a feeling that is similar to how I feel about this image:
I would say the faded faces which imply either the deceased and/or that which has faded into the past or history.

I agree; your explanation is the correct interpretation.

My two cents.
Not only is the buffalo a Native American Icon, but now a national icon since it was named as the national mammal.
Beautiful piece of work Mac.
Was Tom Hanks in the movie "The Da Vinci Code" an Iconographer? He interpreted symbols.
Symbologist/Iconologist.
Okay, thanks.

Will get to it later tonight or tomorrow.
Now I am curious, so I am headed to your contest, also, Buzz.
Is this the correct link to it Buzz?

The survival of the Indian was dependent on the survival of the buffalo.
Interesting message here, AMac. I like it.

Iconographers analyze this phenomenon.
