What Movie Did You Ignore When It Was New Only To Find Out Years Later How Good It Was?
I'm going to have a movie thread.
The premise is a movie that, for one reason or another, you never watched until years after it's release, but then at that time you realized you had missed something really good.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My first choice is a movie I watched just the other day, Clueless, a teenage satire/comedy from 1995. I had heard it was a good film over the years, but was never interested. Then I saw it available on one of the movie streaming channels on Sling and for some reason I just clicked on it.
Clueless is about a 16 year old high school student/Beverly Hills princess named Cheralyn. Rotten Tomatoes says the plot is based on an early 19th century novel by Jane Austen , Emma.
Cheralyn is superficially a spoiled rich girl who is way overly concerned with shopping, appearances, beauty products, and being the most popular girl in school. But, and I think this is the key to why the movie is so good, Cher has a big heart as well and spends a lot of her time pondering how to help the people in her life , particularly as a romance matchmaker.
Clueless expertly satirizes the 90's consumer culture, and high school life. The star, Alicia Silverstone , manages to portray Cher as both confused and in control, a dichotomy that is explained through an extensive narration.
I really liked this movie that I had never seen for the first 22 years of it's existence.
I also recently watched the original Iron Man movie, which came out in 2008, for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked that as well. I am usually not a fan of superhero movies.
I didn't watch Star Wars until it was out on video.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and How Green Was My Valley (1941). These are two movies I never watched until the last decade even though I've been a classic movie fan for many years, and I discovered that both were great movies. As well, on Perrie's advice I watched The Ghost and Mrs Muir (1947) a few years ago and enjoyed it too.
This article is one that was wiped off the front page before I even got to see it. I have to check the Forums to see what I've missed.
