'Very Disrespectful': Berkeley College Republicans Angered by Vandalism of Kate Steinle Vigil
Members of UC Berkeley College Republicans are shocked after finding the poster of Kate Steinle they had set up on campus for a vigil torn and stuffed in the trashcan Thursday night. Sergio Quintana reports. (Published Friday, Dec. 8, 2017)
Anger is simmering within a UC Berkeley student group after a vigil for Kate Steinle was destroyed.
The 32-year-old woman was shot dead in July 2015 as she strolled with her father on Pier 14. The shooter, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who had been deported five times prior his arrest, was acquitted of murder and involuntary manslaughter in a hotly debated trial. He was found guilty of one count of felony possession of a firearm.
Last week’s verdict is stirring up emotions and an immigration debate across the United States.
Closer to home, the Berkeley College Republicans are upset that someone ripped up a poster that was part of a vigil for Steinle.
“We set up some posters with her picture on them and we had candles that spelled out her name,” said Matt Roannau, a vice president of the student group.
Ronnau said he was shocked when a fellow member found the destroyed poster stuffed in the trash.
He called the incident “very disrespectful … to the memory of this woman. Regardless of what your political views are, I don’t think that’s appropriate.”
Steinle’s family has implored people not to politicize her death, but it has become a regular subject at President Donald Trump’s rallies.
“He didn’t know it was a gun, that’s his new line,” Trump said at a Florida rally on Friday. “Did you notice the federal government came in and brought another suit against him? We’ll come in. That was a total miscarriage of justice.”
A federal grand jury has issued two criminal indictments against Garcia Zarate, both for possession of a gun and ammunition.

An innocent young lady just out for a walk with her father and shot by someone who wasn't suppose to be in this country in the first place receives this kind of treatment by those who have lost all contact with morality.
Why doesn't this surprise me.
sad and pathetic people
Point blank this event wasn't approved or sanctioned by the school. The school let them lay down flowers and candles and even put up a main poster on the steps of Sproul Hall, they claimed would be signed and sent to the district attorneys office. Any other posters were not authorized, so they cant be mad if those were torn down or thrown away. Point blank I can see if it was the main poster ( they would have been stupid to leave it there unguarded in the first place!) but it sounds like a few snowflakes crying because they couldn't get their way!
You don't have to take the opposing view here Willyjay. You can just admit this is sad that anyone would choose to do anything harmful concerning an innocent young lady who is no longer able to enjoy her life because she was killed by an illegal while taking a walk with her father. That would show some semblance of morality.
I'm far from your typical anything!
No it's sad that this innocent young lady life had to end like that period.....the perpetrators immigration status is irrelevant, if you truly want to go the heartstring approach.....but the article is about some snowflakes on UC Berkeley who got butthurt because one of their posters from an unsanctioned vigil was taken down and thrown in the trash
This show how truly ignorant you are of the whole situation. It's made worse by your unwillingness to at least educate your self on it.
"Butthurt"? I don't think you are being exactly fair here.
That phrase has been overused.
Can you honestly say that Berkeley is a College that we can all be proud of? You really believe they are being just in blatantly disregarding another's views? Personally, wouldn't want their views disregarded.
Our Country is in a sad state of affairs.
And neither is tolerance for self righteous snowflakes who want to feign outrage while politicizing the tragic death of this young woman even after the family urged everyone stop doing things like this
Really? So, basically you are claiming that if the killer was a US citizen or a legal immigrant, you would care less about this woman's death then?.......good to know
So in other words......if it wasn't for the fact that the killer was an illegal alien, you wouldn't give a rat's ass about this woman's senseless death right?
What is just as relevant is that the family pleaded:
Steinle’s family has implored people not to politicize her death, but it has become a regular subject at President Donald Trump’s rallies.
And Republicans are simply ignoring them to score cheap political points. This "vigil" was a farce, not done because any Republican actually mourns Kathy, they only mourn the lost opportunity to bash immigrants.
I have as much remorse about this woman's death as I have every other senseless tragic deaths.......what makes hers any more special?
Dude, the entire seed is about the politicizing of the woman's tragic death! I'm not the one bringing up the killer's immigration status, because like I said before if you truly wanted to go the heartstring route, the killers status is irrelevant to the fact that this young woman died a tragic and needless death!
Dude you stop riding the USS Self Righteous Indignation, especially since your very first post was the politicization of this tragic death!
Do not even attempt to lecture me!
And has been for almost a decade.
Hold up. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate was found not guilty? How is that possible?
And PS: Who gives a shit whether or not he is an illegal immigrant? He murdered this young woman and got away with it. Where did they dig up a jury ridiculous enough to let this guy have the last laugh?
Since he was not convicted, he is not a murderer, and has not gotten away with anything. What is your problem with our justice system? Should people be convicted because of your imaginings?
I wasn't knocking it. I was highly recommending it.
Then you should use it, there was nothing unintelligible in my post, at least not to English speakers.
Since the family asked that her death not be politicized, why don't we all just adhere to their wishes?
