Frozen World Adds Beauty

Yeah, it's cold, but it does add a certain beauty to all manner of things.  The following is an article with photos of Niagara falls, as much ice as they have seen for many years.

I hope you enjoy!

Frozen Niagara Falls Stuns Visitors

I'll add more photos from the area in comments.

Though its pretty cold out, there is a lot of beauty to be found in the 'current situation'.

Great photos, I especially liked the one with the rainbow over the falls and the parking meter that looks like a human face.

I enjoy the photos, but I sure as heck don't want to see it in person.

Having lived the first 21 years of my life less than an hour's drive to Niagara Falls, and then moving to Toronto, which took a half hour longer, I've seen those views more than once - they are a marvel to see. Of course the best views are from the Canadian side.

The back yard of my brother's former home, close to where I used to live. There was no swimming that day:

I might disagree, in New York, we get to look at the falls and the highly developed tourist areas of Niagara Falls, Onatario.  On the other hand, from the Canadian side, you have to look across and see the continual failure of government to capitalize on one of the 7 natural wonders of the world....where the majority of shops on Main Street are boraded up.....but....back to the snow and ice....

The ones that I find to be the most beautiful are of the waterfalls that have frozen over.

Evening.....Sorry but we are heading to 40oC here in the next few days...Yahoo, sun, sand and surf...Summer is here at last...But the snow scenes do look very nice. Had never seen snow until I went to Europe and loved it...The poms thought I was nuts...But I think the novelty would wear off after a few years of it...Have a great day...

Gajenn,

Right next to the size button is one that usually comes up as Float Left.  If you change the drop down to Normal, it's much easier to type around or under it.

When you load up the image, on the left side of the 'Embed Media' window it asks what size.  I normally use 512.

I'm curious too, it's very beautiful. It looks very similar to a Bradford Pear tree, at least the white blooms do. My neighbors have a couple and they stink to high heaven in the spring LOL

To you and Spike,

I'll have to work on the name of that tree.

The leaves in the fall are really beautiful too, multi colored.

I'll find out.

Did have kind of blue hue to it.  Had to drive to Central NY saturday morning......early......stopped at a rest area for a coule minutes, came back out and started the truck, engine light came on and nothing but cold air blowing out of the heater........got it to a dealership and they replaced the blender door.....for a mealy $353.  But got heat again.  Went riding yesterday and failed to take any pics......and our cold wave has broken-talking 40s and maybe 50s one day this week, plus significant rain.....sigh......

There’s a specific reason as to why snow photos can be blue or muddy gray; if anyone is interested I will give the details and the fix.

Sure, always up to learn.  I'm sure there are adjustments on my smartphone camera that I could use, but I don't know enough about them.

Not sure about smart phone adjustments although some have an edit feature that enables brightness and other edits.

• Camera LIGHT METERS are calibrated to base a "neutral" tone on 17% GRAY (0% = White, 100% = Black)

• If a scene is overly BRIGHT, like snow, the camera's LIGHT METER will EXPOSE THE SCENE TO MOVE TOWARDS THE 17% GRAY … so i.e. bright snow scenes will show the snow as a dull GRAY or BLUISH TONE.

• The opposite will occur if a scene is overly DARK … the LIGHT METER will try to expose, again, for 17% GRAY and consequently LIGHTEN it.

HOW TO COMPENSATE

• To KEEP BRIGHT SCENES BRIGHT, INTENTIONALLY SET THE CAMERA TO OVEREXPOSE (there are several ways to do this, the easiest being if the camera has a +/- exposure setting, take several shots of the same scene … 1) +1/3 f stop overexpose, 2) +2/3 f stop over, +1 Full f stop over. One of the three, etc. should give a "correct/acceptable" shot!

• Although it's best to get the shot right initially, many gray or blue snow scenes can be improved with editing in applications like Photoshop.

With your permission, I will "fix" one of your snow scenes and repost it.
