This is Respecting the Anthem????

link

President Donald Trump, the national anthem's most vocal defender, doesn't appear to even know the lyrics.

Trump attended the NCAA championship football game in Atlanta on Monday, where the Zac Brown Band, accompanied by a gospel choir, performed the anthem .

The camera zoomed in on the president as he struggled to occasionally sing along. Well-known phrases like "proudly we hail" and "twilight's last gleaming" seemed to escape the president's memory as he mumbled the lyrics, often stopping altogether.

Earlier in the day, Trump told an audience in Nashville that "we want our national anthem respected."

Watch Trump mangle the national anthem below.

I'm locking this down since I won't be here to monitor this afternoon

I think I'm more upset about his constant movement and patting his chest while the anthem is played. One is supposed to stand still while the anthem is playing

I would rather see people taking a knee than watch this man disrespect the anthem and the flag in this manner

Like some of the 10 year-olds in the stands.  Unfortunately, that 10 year-old is trapped in the body of an old man.

So, you'd rather bash Trump for at least trying and showing his pride but you won't say a thing 'bout the Bama player who SHOUTED "F*UCK TRUMP" from the sidelines just prior to the anthem being played????

Patting his chest is showing his pride in being an American.  Hell, I don't know all the words to the anthem - I just had to stand at attention.

Say what you want about Trump's political crap, but his pride in being an American Citizen is pretty damn hard to beat.

'Bout the Bama player?  I'd have tried to deck his ass.  Whether he likes Trump or not, the man deserves respect/honor as the President of OUR United States - an office that only 45 people have held in the past 229 years.  20 year old punks who only know how to do one thing - play football - ain't got no respect from me for telling the President of the U. S. to go get F*ck'd - and karma shoulda slapped Saban in the face for that one.

JMHO.

I really don't believe that trump is a patriotic American. He talks a lot of talk, but I don't think he really knows what it is to be a true American. If he did, he wouldn't act like he wants to be the dictator and at least understand the First Amendment.

There's dissent and then there is dissent.  Yelling 'Fuck Trump' is acceptable, but when some dingbat in the House or Representatives shouted out that President Obama was a 'Liar', the left wanted him tarred and feathered.  If 'dissent' is the highest from of patriotism (an assumption, BTW), why weren't you folks all about backing that guy in the house?

why weren't you folks all about backing that guy in the house?

Really, so Dissent is only the highest form of Patritotism if it's in the venue YOU think it should be in?  And a college football player at a football game is the right time, in your book?  You are the problem in this country right now.

Try sticking to the discussion instead of trying to personalize it to people here on Newstalkers, if that's within your set of abilities.

Umm......yeah! a college football player at a football game IS the right time, NOT during a joint session of Congress by a sitting House Representative who is supposed to be working with the President for the people!

You are the problem in this country right now.

What? That I know the difference between some snot nose punk kid making a off handed remark about Trump or a SITTING US HOUSE REPRESENTATIVE showing total disrespect to not only the Presidency, but also to Congress and the state he is representing!......and what's wrong with this country is people like you who somehow refuse to see that distinction!

Try sticking to the discussion instead of trying to personalize it to people here on Newstalkers, if that's within your set of abilities.

Says the person who made this comment!

You are the problem in this country right now.

Look in the mirror before trying to cast dispersions sparkplug! As for Trump, I could care less if he sits, stands or takes a shit during the national anthem.....like someone said, the problem I have is the hypocrisy this clown has, claiming that the anthem needs to be respected at the same time doing everything disrespectful short of kneeling during it!

I have to say that I don't sing the anthem myself when it is played, the main reason is that to sing hurts my throat from all the years I've spent smoking I've done damage there, plus I don't have the "wind" I use to have. Trump may not know the words, that is a given, there are a lot of Americans that don't know the words to their own National Anthem but, if he is going to call for the players and, others to "respect" it, he should at least learn the words to it.

I'm not bothered so much by the fact he doesn't know the words, but he should take the time to learn them. I'm bothered by his constant agitation while the anthem is being played, he made a fool of himself...patting his chest and dancing around. Stand still dammnit!

Well conservatives can give back the 140% increase in their 401k's they saw over the last eight years then, right? I'm a basketball fan. I can think of very few more efficient ways to discredit the national anthem than to have it performed before every single NBA game. Plus playoffs, and we have something like fifteen hundred performances. Each performer wants to be memorable, so we get crazy vocal pyrotechnics... at every performance... "and the crowd goes wild!!!"

So... instead of the anthem being something almost sacred, it has become a show-time annex to sports, like beer, hot dogs, and skimpily-clad dancers...

Somebody posted an article a while back about the flag.  The place where you'll find the most flags is at a car dealership.

Patriotism has been commercialized, turned into a tool for promoting sales ... denatured like Christmas.

I don't like it.

the anthem

I have been singing in public for over fifty years and have had the privilege of singing our anthem at a variety of social, sporting, political and other public events. The trick for a man whose range is from bass to baritone is to start that first "Oh Oh" as low as you can go or those high notes at the end are impossible...

In fact, the song is damn near impossible for most folks to sing. If they want People to sing along they should have picked America The Beautiful as our anthem. In any case, this old liberal Democrat has known the words since first grade. Trump's spouting about our Anthem has been nothing but false grace. The only symbol Trump really venerates is this one...$

I agree with the author. Athletes respectfully taking a knee during the anthem is not nearly as disrespectful as acting a fool during it. How does one get out of grade school without knowing the words to our anthem? It is not like Trump grew up recently. The man is over seventy years old and attended military school over fifty years ago...

Interesting that a military commander refuses a distinguished award based on athletes that refuse to pay homage to an anthem and one at that not even totally unique to this country. He swore an oath as a member of the military to uphold the Constitution ,not to worship a flag or song, he instead decided the  very Constitution took a backseat to what is important to him. One wonders if the uniform he wears is impeccable but his service less so. The days of entertainers holding high office are hopefully at an end, we need candidates that possess diplomatic, economic and political expertise, knowledge of  American history and vision for the future, not an ill behaved reality show goof or talk show host. Trump inherited his fortune, Oprah made hers and neither one is presidential material, money doesn't make a qualification.
