Trump is wrong. A government shutdown won’t devastate the US military.

President Donald Trump keeps claiming that the possible government shutdown on Friday will hurt the military worst of all.
On Thursday, he tweeted, “A government shutdown will be devastating to our military ... something the Dems care very little about!” He made similar comments to reporters during a visit to the Pentagon a few hours later.
But that’s not entirely true. That’s because a government shutdown doesn’t actually mean the entire government shuts down. Government employees who are considered “excepted” are exempt from the furlough and will continue to work and get paid like normal.

Active-duty military personnel are among those who are “excepted.” So the military will still function even if the government shuts down, although as of now they will not be paid for their work.
Where the shutdown could potentially impact the military, though, is if the thousands of civilian officials and contractors who work for the Department of Defense in support of the military are furloughed.
Positions like accountants, secretaries, and press officers — all of whom do critical work that makes the military run smoothly — are nevertheless considered “non-excepted” and would therefore be sent home if the government shut down (though some people are forced to work for free and just receive back pay after the government reopens).
If the shutdown lasts only a day or two, military personnel probably won’t notice any major changes to their day-to-day work, says Byron Callan, a defense budget expert at Capital Alpha Partners. But if the shutdown lasts longer — stretching into weeks — that’s a different story.
The military still worked during the last government shutdown
It’s worth looking back to the 2013 government shutdown, which lasted for two weeks.
Before it happened, Trump actually tweeted that “All essential services continue. Don’t believe the lies.” It seems that Trump forgot his own advice.

“Here’s the truth, the gov't doesn’t shutdown”

Active-duty troops worked through that ordeal too. “We can and will continue to support key military operations,” Bob Hale, the Defense Department’s comptroller at the time, told Federal News Radio.
But the military did face some hardships. That shutdown halted payments to families of fallen troops, shuttered regional veterans facilities, and canceled some drills for the National Guard and reserve troops.
In other words, we’ve seen this movie before. The government shuts down and the military feels some discomfort while it continues to operate.
So Trump’s rhetoric doesn’t match what might actually happen. The military will continue to work — even if the rest of the government won’t.

One thing to also remember, the Republicans have the majority in both Houses and, they control the White House, if the government shuts down it isn't the fault of Chuck Schumer or, the Democrats, it's all on the Republicans, just like it was in 2013.

My husband was furloughed during the 2013 shutdown. We had to tighten our belts.

I was in the Air Force during a shutdown during the Clinton years. I'm trying to remember if we got paid or not. Our secretary got furloughed but I honestly didn't miss her (lol).

I don't think it's right to force people to work for no pay especially the military

Our pay was withheld during all of them.  Clinton's and Obama's.  The furloughs became a real problem, especially when they furloughed the medical staff of the clinics and hospitals across the military.

This shutdown is totally preventable, DACA and, CHIP are the two things the Democrats want taken care of and, the Republicans refuse to do anything with them, well, I should say some of the Republicans and, Trump refuse to do anything with them, most agree CHIP must be funded but, there are a few hold outs on the Republican side, why are they holding out, this is for the kids.

Children's Health Insurance Program. It's for insurance coverage for kids whose parents make too much to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to buy Marketplace family insurance. It covers about 9 million kids. The GOP House let it laps in Sept. 2016 and have sat on it all this time to use as a bargaining chip.

They need thirteen Democrats to move to the vote so far all they have are four Democrats who will vote to continue the resolution, the Democrats are meeting right now to decide how they will vote, my guess is, without the Republicans at least agreeing to work on DACA or, CHIP over the next few days they will vote for the shutdown.

The Senate Republicans don't want CHIP in the continuing resolution, they don't want DACA at all, the only thing they want done is to move this down the road to another week maybe a month and, then vote on it again and, again. The Democrats want a permanent solution for both.

In order for him to be known to be an illegal, he had to register into the DACA program, he was working AS A DOCTOR, he was not a gang member or, any other illegal thing that Trump and the Right think that illegals are, he is one of the people that was contributing to our society, paying taxes and, in a profession that actually help people. The second thing here is that ICE is using the DACA records to deport these people who are contributing to society, who want to be Americans and, who want to do it legally, yet, people like you somehow find that wrong. It's on Schumer, because he was offered 3 different deals and effused ALL of them.  He even voted no to the unanimous consent deal that would allow Democrats to not even vote on the Continuing Resolution so it required just 51 votes to pass not the 60 votes that it required when actually brought up for a vote.  So, this is on Schumer's and the Democrats heads as they wanted DACA to be part of the vote and to get everything they wanted in the bargain.  Democrats are ignoring their Oaths of Office and supporting illegal immigration over the Constitution and the country.  ALL of them and those Republicans that are on board need to resign as they are not doing their duty as they promised.

Wrong, Schumer has refused to vote on the continuing resolution because of Trump's jello like attitude, on Tuesday he agrees to a deal on immigration then, on Thursday he refused the deal, Friday Schumer made a deal with Trump and, returned to the Capital and, learned that Trump called and, said he didn't agree with the deal. When TRUMP makes up his mind then maybe there can be a deal.

If there is a shutdown, it will be known as "Shumer's Shutdown", and the Democrats will be blamed for it. Like the  last shutdown, which Obama wanted to make "as painful as possible" to as many as possible...didn't really amount to much. Except elderly vets were denied access to their memorial, but everyone got paid in the end. It will be another losing issue for Slimeball Shumer. The average Democrat isn't in favor of shutting down the government for an issue that can wait a few more weeks.

The House agreed to it, the SENATE has not, that is were the sticking point is, there are members of the Republican Senate that don't want the CHIP six year extension in there and, they don't want the DACA deal at all. The fact is, the DACA recipients are as American as you or, I, the only difference is THEIR PARENTS BROUGHT THEM OVER HERE WITHOUT ASKING THEM IF THEY WANTED TO COME, THEY HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER so, should they be punished now for their parents mistake? Should they be punished for trying to do things the right way, once they had a way of doing it, ie, DACA, they serve in our military, they hold TAX PAYING jobs, they attend college and, as far as they are concerned they are Americans, they know nothing of their country of origin.

Once again, I will chose my grandson over anyone when it comes to him being able to get the medical care he needs and, deserves.

And it starts: (from the Fayetteville Observer)

Soldiers from the North Carolina National Guard arrived at Fort Bragg on Friday ready to work.

Thousands of soldiers arrived with hundreds of vehicles, including more than 20 M1 Abrams tanks and 30 Bradley Fighting Vehicles.

They began preparations for a massive assault on an urban training complex over the weekend that would also involve Apache attack helicopters and Black Hawk helicopters. The training, dubbed Operation Hickory Hammer, would coincide with similar actions in three other states and would serve as a validation of the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team before a massive exercise at Fort Bliss, Texas, later this year.

But on Saturday morning, before a single tank could roll onto the target objective, soldiers began packing up and getting ready to go home.

It continues:

Fort Bragg schools are expected to cancel some extracurricular activities, and local commissaries are set to follow an “orderly shutdown to reduce the amount of perishables on hand and properly safeguard equipment and facilities,” officials said.

Another victim of the shutdown on Saturday was Fort Bragg’s monthly Saturday Proficiency Jump Program, which helps local paratroopers obtain additional training jumps while also providing a family friendly environment at Sicily Drop Zone.

Not only are the Soldiers screwed, so are their kids, families and the surrounding area.

It's too bad, that about 2AM this morning, Leader McConnell objected to H.R.1301 - Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2017 when it was brought to the floor by Sen. Clair McCaskill. BTW, that's a HOUSE bill written by a Republican. Sen. Durbin filed a Senate version on earlier on the 19th,  S. 2328. A bill making continuing appropriations for military pay and death benefits in the event of a Government shutdown; to the Committee on Appropriations. That was ignored in the end too.

Maybe before they go into recess today McConnell will let one of them pass by unanimous consent.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from Illinois, slammed President Trump as a “five-deferment draft dodger” and criticized his comments attacking North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Saturday.

Duckworth, an Army veteran who lost both her legs during combat in Iraq in 2004, made her comments on the Senate floor — hours after Trump tweeted the Democrats were playing “shutdown politics” and holding the “military hostage.”

She said his remarks were the “latest example of him failing to show leadership to take responsibility for leading this nation.”

“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible,” Duckworth said. “Sadly, this is something the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do, and I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger.”

“I have a message for Cadet Bone Spurs: If you cared about our military, you’d stop baiting Kim Jong Un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops, and millions of innocent civilians, in danger,” the senator continued.

Military troops are essential personnel, they always get paid, in fact non-essential personell who stay home have always gotten paid, so nobody is buying a bullshit stunt by dems?

No, the military doesn't get paid, unless Congress agrees to it, McConnell killed the bill that would have allowed it, it is on McConnell, troops are required to remain on duty and, to work.

Never has the government shut down when one party controlled all of it!  Republicans in senate also voted against it.  Need a reminder of why this is the TRUMP SHUTDOWN?  From the s-hole's pie hole?

90 percent of democrats voted against the CR bill even though they support  everything in it.

as chuck schumner said, its the politics of idiocy to shut down the government over immigration reform.

Devastate the military?  Really?  Devastated from what?  Couldn't be from crooked private contractors like Eric Prince could it?

Billionaires got their payback.  Don't worry about it.  The air and water is getting 'a little dirtier,' don't worry about that either.  Melania is sticky by the 'dude' even in the Stormy seas.  No worry their either.  All is good.

The $100,000 a couple fund raiser-------$250,000 if you want to sit closer-------in Mar a Largo may be on hold.  Now that is something to worry about.

Dems are caving as we speak. Schumer's politics of insanity weren't working and they are going to vote to reopen the government today, without DACA attached.

The hostage taking didn't work, thankfully.

Some had eyed the possibility of a breakthrough. A Republican aide involved in the talks said that McConnell and his team were considering putting their plan in document form with more detail as a way of convincing some Democrats to support the short-term bill.
Democrats said they were open to considering a written pledge but said the specifics would matter. "Trust but verify," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
As the impasse continued through the weekend, it was unclear whether the public would blame the Republicans, who control the White House and Congress, or Democrats, who sought protection for young undocumented immigrants as government agencies remain shuttered.
With the negotiations focused on the Senate, President Trump used Twitter to interject his opinion. Democrats are acting at the behest of their "far left base" in advocating for "dreamers," he argued.
"The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for noncitizens. Not good!" Trump wrote on Twitter.
The effects of the shutdown over the weekend were relatively limited: halting trash pickup on National Park Service property, canceling military reservists' drill plans, switching off some government employees' cellphones.
But the shutdown's continuing into Monday means that hundreds of thousands of workers stayed home and key federal agencies were affected. Federal contractors will see payments delayed, and the Internal Revenue Service will slow its preparations for the coming tax season.
In a television interview, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) had called Democrats' position "bizarre" and "just ridiculous."
"We were in bipartisan, earnest, good-faith DACA negotiations before the shutdown," Ryan said on "Fox & Friends," referring to talks over how to resolve the status of immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children.
Sunday began with more of the partisan posturing that marked much of the previous week, delivered on the morning news programs, on the House and Senate floors, and in a presidential tweet.
Trump wrote that if the "stalemate continues," then Republicans should use the "Nuclear Option" to rewrite Senate rules and try to pass a long-term spending bill with a simple majority rather than the 60 votes needed to pass most legislation — a notion Trump has previously floated to McConnell's repeated dismissal.
The president otherwise remained uncharacteristically quiet, heeding the advice of senior advisers who argued that he has the upper hand over Schumer and the Democrats and that they would soon be forced to capitulate.
On the Senate floor, Schumer showed no signs of caving and kept pressure on Republicans.
"Not only do they not consult us, but they can't even get on the same page with their own president," he said.
As the clock ticked toward a scheduled 1 a.m. Monday vote — set by McConnell in part because of arcane Senate rules but later postponed — the moderates made the most visible progress toward a deal. Among the participants in the Collins meeting were a number of Democrats who are seeking reelection in states Trump won in 2016 — five of whom voted Friday against sparking the shutdown in the first place.
No firm proposal emerged from the meeting, but senators discussed a broad outline that could unlock a deal: modify the temporary spending bill now under consideration in the Senate to expire on Feb. 8, and then find some way to guarantee that immigration legislation moves forward in the interim.
The White House has said it supports the plan for funding through Feb. 8 but has been wary of making concessions on immigration. While legislation protecting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients could probably move through the Senate with Democrats and a handful of Republicans supporting it, Trump has rejected proposals along those lines, and House GOP leaders are under fierce pressure not to bring up any bill that a majority of Republicans would reject.
Other Republicans also saw little advantage in making any concessions to advance legislation that would provide protections for "dreamers" — 690,000 of whom face potential deportation after Trump canceled the DACA program.
Democrats said they made a significant concession over the weekend, agreeing to put major funding behind Trump's promised border wall, something that has been anathema to liberals since the 2016 presidential election.
But the concession was rejected on two fronts. Doubts remained that the Democratic rank and file would agree to wall funding and Republicans questioned Schumer's claim that he offered Trump precisely what he wanted.

The democrats have 22 senate seats they have to defend with the campaign motto: Fuck Americans, we love illegals more

It was still Trump who forced the shutdown, it is Trumps shutdown.

As most Americans agree.

39% Dems 31 independent 31 Republicans Those shitheads should have just polled the Black congressional caucus, they would have got a more accurate poll.

What I read was slightly different. From the article.

According to the Politico/Morning Consult poll released Monday, 41 percent of those polled said the GOP would be more to blame, while 36 percent chose the Democrats. Nearly a quarter, 23 percent, said they did not know or had no opinion.

Reading is important, understanding is better.

Oh, I understand, too bad you can't see your own bigoted ideas on polling, maybe if you re-read what you wrote you might understand but, I doubt it.
