13 Russian nationals, 3 Russian agencies indicted for meddling in the 2016 presidential election

A federal grand jury on Friday indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for interfering in the 2016 presidential election, laying out a detailed case alleging that they used fraudulent social media accounts to try and boost Donald Trump’s candidacy.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the indictments — a product of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation — on Friday at the Department of Justice.

In a news conference announcing the indictments, Rosenstein stressed that the indictment does not conclude that the alleged Russian interference impacted the outcome of the election.

But according to the 37-page indictment, the Russian organization “had a strategic goal to sow discord in the U.S. political system” by “supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J. Trump (”Trump Campaign”) and disparaging Hillary Clinton.”

Each defendant was charged with “conspiracy to defraud the United States.” Other charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft.

The indictments are a blow to Trump, who has continuously denied that Russians sought to help elect him president.

Buried within the indictments are a hint that Americans played a role in the alleged Russian efforts.

“Certain defendants traveled to the United States under false pretenses for the purpose of collecting intelligence to inform defendants’ operations,” the indictment says. “Defendants also procured and used computer infrastructure, based partly in the United States, to hide the Russian origin of their activities to avoid detection by U.S. regulators and law enforcement.”

Even more, the indictment says “unwitting individuals associated with the Trump Campaign” communicated with the defendants who were “posing as U.S. persons.”

The indictments lay out a detailed account of how the 13 indicted individuals allegedly carried out their meddling campaign via paid advertisements on and organic posts on social media websites in an effort to “communicate derogatory information about Hillary Clinton” and “to support Bernie Sanders and then-candidate Donald Trump.”

“Certain organization-produced materials about the 2016 U.S. presidential election used election-related hashtags, including: #Trump2016, #TrumpTrain, #MAGA, #IWontProtectHillary and #Hillary4Prison,” the indictment says.

The indictment also alleges that the Russian meddling campaign tried to “encourage U.S. minority groups not to vote” or “to vote for a third-party U.S. presidential candidate.”

And it alleges that the 13 indicted Russian nationals “organized and coordinated political rallies in the United States” in swing states such as Florida and Pennsylvania.

Apparently, this is just the beginning. I feel sure there will be further indictments forth coming, and it will most interesting to see where this leads to on the American side.

This is just the beginning of the end … Mueller is releasing selected pieces of information to flush out the Trump insiders who will try to make their deals as they speculate regarding when Mueller will come knocking!

Conservative media are touting today's indictments as a kind of "proof" that there was no collusion/conspiracy since the White House wasn't cited in the indictments … that's whistling past the graveyard folks.

If Trump is being blackmailed by Russia, this will make him explode AS HE IS INCREASINGLY PRESSURED TO IMPOSE THE SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA!

Denial is what they have been doing for the past year or more. As Yogi Berra used to say, "It ain't over 'til it's over", and I have a feeling that it "ain't over" yet. However, the news today proves that the accusation of Russian interference was not just 'fake news', which Trump and the  right had been claiming.

Not the case; Mueller is strategizing by not saying one-way-or-another … which will generate huge anxiety among Trump insiders as to what and who is next. The flipping and throwing under the bus is already underway and this will bring it to fever pitch.

Having claimed for a year or more that it was all "fake news" it will be a hard pill to swallow for the GOP side. And I feel sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. The Trump base has little to crow about at this point. And I think there are some Americans who will soon be named as well.

Gee.  That's funny.  Because:

Rosenstein said there is no allegation in the indictment that any American was a knowing participant in the scheme, nor is there any allegation that the scheme affected the outcome of the election.

And

"There is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity," Rosenstein said, adding there "there is no allegation in the indictment that the charged conduct altered the outcome of the 2016 election."

Also, the article says this is a blow to Trump:

The indictments are a blow to Trump, who has continuously denied that Russians sought to help elect him president.

This is false.  Trump has said there was no COLLUSION between his campaign and Russia.  He has not denied Russian meddling.

And based on the statements by Rosenstein to the press, it looks like there was NO collusion.  Sorry Dems.  Guess you're gonna have to find another false narrative to rally around.

The Russians, being Russians, wanted to destabilize American democracy and undermine our faith in the electoral system. So they attacked Democrats and Republicans in the primary season. Once It became Trump vs Hillary, they went after Hillary, the overwhelming favorite. Just ask any Democrat on this site who spent the last 4 years guaranteeing what a lock her Presidency is.  Since "everyone knew" Hillary the overwhelming favorite would win, attacking her made strategic sense. They wanted to undermine her Presidency.

When she lost, as today's indictment shows, the Russians began attacking and organizing against Trump. They wanted chaos and it worked.

We knew the Russians try to destabilize American elections. Today's news doesn't really change anything.
