I'm messing around with combinations of ISO (film speed equivalent settings/light sensitivity) and flash to see if there's a repeatable, predictable process to get shots like these.
As with most animal (and people) shots, if nothing else is in focus, if the eyes are, the shot might work nevertheless. I'll be trying to get more of these using continuous frame shooting at 6 frames per second (fps)with high ISO settings up to 6400. When doing so, I can't effectively use the flash because it won't recycle fast enough to correspond with 6 fps.
Sorry about the technical stuff -- I thought it might be of interest to some viewers.
Are you using an independent strobe or just the camera flash?
You can get strobes that will flash that fast, and key to the camera, but they are a bit pricey...
I think you have one setup already, those shots are amazing and VERY artsy for a native pix.
Psst: there are some of us out here my friend that likes to hear the nerdy bits from time to time.
Looks like the first pic you caught the launch, A VERY difficult shot to get in the wild in stop motion. The rest appear to be landings, and the last one duplicates the effect of the first shot, the Wings are there but translucent, An Absolutely beautiful effect.
I guess, of all these birds, I love the Carolina Chickadee the most-- we have them here, and they are such sweet little birds! They come to sit beside us at our favorite outdoor restaurant, so we give them bread crumbs... I love them!
Here's hoping this article takes off.
Incredible stop-action. What shutter speed do you think was necessary to do that?
Believe it or not, 1/60 sec using a flash -- ISO of 600-1000.
Ah, then it's the miniscule duration of the flash that freezes the action.
Stunning photos Mac.
Your birds look like little angels.
Beautiful!
