ISRAEL TO U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL: IRAN STILL TESTING BALLISTIC MISSILES

“Iran continues to ignore its obligations to the international community and further destabilize the Middle East."

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon informed the Security Council on Thursday that in January 2018 Iran had carried out two ballistic missile tests.

The missile launches, he emphasized, were in clear violation of Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

“On 2 January 2018, Iran launched a Shahab-3 variant at the Cha-bahar firing range [in southeast Iran],” Danon claimed in a letter circulated to the 15-member Security Council.

“On 5 January 2018, Iran launched a Scud variant from a firing range 110 km. northeast of Kerman. Both the Shahab-3 and Scud missiles are Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) category one ballistic missiles, capable of delivering a nuclear payload of 500 kilograms for a range of over 300 kilometers.”

“Iran’s activities are therefore in violation of Article 3 of Annex B to Security Council Resolution 2231,” wrote the ambassador.  Resolution 2231 is the UN’s official endorsement of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, informally known as the Iran nuclear deal.

The agreement was originally signed on July 14, 2015 between China, France, Germany, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States, the high representative of the European Union, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

America’s participation in the accord, however, was rescinded earlier this month by US President Donald Trump, who complained that the parameters of the deal “were so poorly negotiated” it would allow Iran to be on the “verge of a nuclear breakout” at any time.

The unwillingness of Iran to agree on concessions in its ballistic missile program was also one of the major hurdles that caused Trump to nix the nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic.

“Iran continues to ignore its obligations to the international community and further destabilize the Middle East, particularly in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and the Gaza Strip,” Danon stated in the letter.

Danon further noted that these launches are part of a series of “Iranian breaches of this resolution this year, including the missiles it fired from Syria into Israel and the armed UAV it launched from Syria into Israeli airspace.”

“Its activities pose a direct threat to Israel and the entire region. The Security Council must remain vigilant in the face of Iranian aggression,” he wrote.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei set out seven conditions for Tehran to stay in the nuclear deal with world powers, which included the condition that they would not seek new negotiations on Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional Middle East activities.

Kind of ironic that Israel is whining about other countries which ignore UN resolutions.

Kind of ironic that there are certain members of NT who only whine about Israel and not about other countries.

The UN spends most of its time whining about and passing resolutions against Israel and rarely about or against other countries - one might wonder about that. However, it's not ironic, it's just "good old fashioned Jew-hatred" (a phrase borrowed from the movie Schindler's List).

So... You're saying that the UN has never passed a resolution against Iran?  Seems to me that, since the US has pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, they can do anything they want.

Yes, of course, the ballistic missile resolution was one against Iran. I've amended my comment accordingly to change the word "not" to "rarely".

Sorry Buzz - not every political disagreement is rooted in antisemitism.

However you are correct in that what Israel is doing isn't ironic, it's blatant hypocrisy.    My thanks to you for the correction.

Of course you are right, Skrekk. Not every disagreement is rooted in anti-Semitism, although when it comes to Israel, many are.

To me, making a huge issue about what Israel does, while ignoring so many other countries that do much much worse, is hypocrisy.

Sounds like Israel needs to clean about its own act long before it points the finger of "UN resolutions" at anyone else.

Pretty much everyone knows and understands that the Iranians cannot be trusted to do what they promise they will do publicly.  People thinking that the Iranian government's leadership can be honest brokers are fools of the highest order.

An interesting claim coming from a supporter of the guy who just abrogated the JCPOA despite his own administration telling him that Iran is in full compliance.

"...Iran is in full compliance..."

IF you can believe those who have established that they cannot be trusted (ballistic missiles), proven by tons of documentation recently recovered that they lied about their intentions from the very beginning, promoted terrorism around the world, are entitled to self-report activity on their military bases, are governed by a theocracy that covets takiyyah, and in light of the recent resignation of the head of the IAEA (when it looked like some bribery might have been going on).

You're entitled to your opinion, Skrekk, but many of us are more concerned about Iran, a country that has considered America to be its enemy for years.  "DEATH TO AMERICA, DEATH TO ISRAEL"

AND, what could be more significant than to have your comment "thumbed-up" by a member whose user name is "Wishful_thinkin".  LOL

Apart from the issue of how undeclared nuclear sites are handled, please cite the sections of the JCPOA where any of your "issues" are addressed.    All of your worries are completely irrelevant to the JCPOA.

No surprise. My regret is that they were not more successful.  Don't naively deny that every country that has the computer ability does it, whether through private firms or government agencies. Was it any surprise that Israel used a virus to screw up Iran's nuclear research? Was it any surprise that US government money was paid to a firm to try to sabotage Netanyahu's election? Are all the investigations into Russian interference news to anyone?

I put absolutely NO blame on Israel for doing everything in its power, openly and clandestinely, politically and under the table, to stop Iran, the PROVEN greatest provider of support for terrorism, from achieving atomic weapons, now, ten years from now and forever (at least until there is a sea change of a regime change in Iran).

Maybe Obama wanted to do it, but I wouldn't supply a pyromaniac with a flamethrower.
