'Duck Dynasty' star defends God by fantasizing about raping and murdering atheist family

Proving that hes a solidly Old Testament guy, Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson recently delivered a graphic and vulgar hypothetical about the rape and murder of atheists to prove the existence of God.

The devout-Christian-turned-redneck-reality-star told a Florida prayer breakfast last Friday that all morality stems from God and that to not believe in God would make any level of violence acceptable. To illustrate his point, Robertson described a hypothetical scenario in which an atheist family was tied up and tortured.

The liberal media watchdog group Right Wing Watch reported Robertsons comments:

Ill make a bet with you, Robertson said. Two guys break into an atheists home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him. And then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him. And then they can look at him and say, Isnt it great that I dont have to worry about being judged? Isnt it great that theres nothing wrong with this? Theres no right or wrong, now is it dude?

Robertson kept going: Then you take a sharp knife and take his manhood and hold it in front of him and say, Wouldnt it be something if this [sic] was something wrong with this? But youre the one who says there is no God, theres no right, theres no wrong, so were just having fun. Were sick in the head, have a nice day.

If it happened to them, Robertson continued, they probably would say, something about this just aint right.

Robertson's brutal, sadistic rant has already drawn plenty of criticism online, not only for the gleeful way in which he described the theoretical violent attack, but also for the warped view of human morality that it representedthe suggestion that God is the only thing holding people back from committing heinous acts against one another.

Paraphrasing Phil Robertson: "God is the only thing holding me back from raping kids and decapitating women."

So Phil Robertson decided to let us know what he'd be up to if weren't for God keeping him in line. (Trigger warning) http://t.co/74pSKoEptX

Keith Lowell Jensen (@keithlowell) March 25, 2015

The ultimate test of a person's faith is believing in the existence of God despite the existence of Phil Robertson.

Frank Conniff (@FrankConniff) March 25, 2015

Dear World, #PhilRobertson doesn't speak for me... Pat Robertson either. With Love, A Christian

John Pavlovitz (@johnpavlovitz) March 25, 2015

The widespread outrage isn't likely to damage the nearly half-billion-dollar Duck Dynasty franchise, which, in addition to its A&E show, also includes a wide range of merchandise. After all, its not like this is the first time Robertson has made these kinds of comments .

The conservative hero first came under fire in 2013 after he was quoted in a Rolling Stone article comparing homosexuality to adultery and beastiality. The article generated substantial controversy, but the only real consequence for Robertson was a nine-day suspension from the show. A&E soon relented after conservatives threatened to boycott the network.

The irony here is that pretty much the only time you hear about someone getting their head cut off, it's done by a religious zealot.I'm a proud atheist, I think everyone knows that by now, and I fully realize that I can chop off the head of any person that I can convince to be alone in a room with me and a sharp sword, and I will not be judged by a god in the afterlife for doing so. The question is, why the hell would I want to do that? Unlike Phil, the idea of doing so would never even enter my mind. I think this guy is truly a dangerous person.

Duck Dynasty is another version of Pro-Wrestling for morons. The show is not even true. None of those guys even had beards or country accents until the producers asked them to so they could do the show that way. They were all clean cut, clean shaven businessmen with a company that was successful and the show is just an advertising gimmick to them. They say stupid and outrageous things to hype the ratings of the show and you can be damned sure they're lying out of their ass when they say them. It's just a fucking fictional show! They are just playing characters! They are no more "real" then Hulk Hogan was in the ring! Anyone who believe those morons are really the way they say they are is a moron too!

It could be interesting to examine the belief systems that people held while they committed crimes which put them on death row .

Except that a radical Islamist is real. This guy is acting out a part to drive ratings. He is no more real then Skipper of Gilligan's Island was.

Blithering idiot's can influence others to do their work for them. Radical Islam got it's start this way and continues to recruit in the same manor.

Are you trying to say Mary Ann wasn't real either? C'mon man...you're killing me.

On the other hand I have a real problem with people in America who insist that everyone follow their version of God and place their religion ahead of our form ofgovernment and think that our secularlaw must reflect their beliefs.

In short, you don't like religious assholes. I'll second that. We are a secular nation and our laws are secular and the Founding Fathers intended us to be a secular nation, no matter how much that pisses off some religious nuts. Religion is a good thing for some people. For them it gives them strength, especially in hard times (loss of a loved one, addiction, etc). However they don't try to make their version of what they believe what everyone else has to believe or change laws to fit their views.

For some other people though religion is some strange sort of addiction and they won't be happy until everyone shares their disease. Their addiction.

If I thought that I would never see my family again, I would likely come unglued. So, please, let me have my faith that we will be together again, someday, with my animals.

I don't want everyone to have to feel as I do, nor do I wish to make the government un-secular, I just want to see my family. I feel it comforting to think of God as being full of love for all of us.

But then, too, I look at death differently than most people. I think death is a release from earthly pain and suffering. So, it's not such a bugaboo to me.

I was raised Catholic and what you say sounds very much how Catholics view death. That you are re-untied with friends and family members who have gone on before you.

I am a Methodist, a direct off-shoot of the Church of England, which is Catholicism without the Pope. Smile.gif

I'm certainly not trying to make everyone feel the way I do. I just think that God is love. Period. I think he loves all of us. I don't see him as the New Testament, evil, smiting God, (my comments about lightning were just jokes). If I can't see my family again, and hug my Grandma and Grandpa, I don't want to go. Smile.gif

I guess this sounds silly. But I just believe that God is in charge, and I trust him to do right by me. I trust him to know when it's the time for me to die, and I trust him to love me. I've been at the point of death several times, and each time, I felt such a wonderful peace. It's not my business what other people believe, and it's not their business what I believe. I don't like to be "preached at", and hell fire and damnation sermons leave me utterly cold-- it goes against the grain of my heart. I see a wonderful order to the universe-- yes, it's just the laws of physics, but maybe, just maybe, God made the laws of physics.

Lots of geologists believe in God, too, surprisingly enough. The concepts of geology are so mind-boggling, that if it weren't for faith, I'd be in an disordered world, unable to cope. There is so much we don't know, and are just beginning to understand. Not having all the answers doesn't bother me-- I think that we're not supposed to know everything. I think we were made in God's image, and part of that image is questioning, exploring, doubting, seeking, etc.

I truly accept that you don't believe in God, and don't at all think you're foolish about it. I know you have done a lot of soul-searching to reach your beliefs, and respect that. For me, I need faith to keep going. I need something to spur me to try to make the world a slightly better place. I need the security that I'm not in charge, and that someone, who knows best, is in charge.

I don't think that God minds that people don't believe in him, and I feel, very strongly, that he shows his face in many different ways to many different people. I can't see the God I believe in, sending the Neanderthals to hell just because they believed in the Great Cave Bear.

I love you, I love Hal, and I love all the people in my life, whether or not they believe in God. I think that the God of love that I believe in, loves them and understands them, too. Who am I to be mean to people?

I don't think that religion, (or not), makes any difference. I think something is missing in people that commit horrendous crimes-- I don't know what's missing-- maybe empathy for someone else?

But, yeah, it would be interesting!

I'm not trying to be snarky here, but the first question that races through any atheist's mind when they read that, is if God cares so much about you, why doesn't he care for some of the most vulnerable people in the world? There are people praying to him constantly for food, water, shelter, a cure, etc., and they are dying miserable deaths instead of experiencing even the slightest bit of relief. Meanwhile, there are Phil Robertsons out there getting showered with more cash than they even know what to do with, even though they proudly espouse some of the most hateful rhetoric imaginable.

I know what you are saying.

There is no easy answer to any of this, other than, it's life. All of life is conjugation of the verb, "to eat". Some people get to eat and some people get eaten. The law of the jungle.

I think, in this life, we are all given challenges that we must meet, in order to learn lessons-- about sharing, giving, faith, steadfastness, etc. I mean, our goal is to have peace at the end. So, the way we conduct ourselves here on the planet, will either let us have peace, or not.

People that are suffering during life, won't, after it's over. Can you truly imagine Hitler's peace? I think he is going to spend eternity meeting all the people he had killed. Perhaps that is his hell.

I understand what you mean, and I think it all involves how you spend the time you have here. I believe that, in the end, God does right by us. None of us can help the circumstances of our births-- that's a crap shoot. The child scrambling in the slums of Brazil has no less value, in God's eyes, than the child who is well fed and loved. The slum child may not make it to adulthood, but, in the end, he will be in "heaven", where food or not doesn't matter.

All these earthly cares mean nothing, in the end. That's just what I believe. I don't have all the answers, I don't know all the why's. Why are some animals born with only 3 legs? Or, how can a white deer survive, when camouflage is their only hope of escape? I don't know. I just trust that there is a plan, somewhere, and that we are all part of the plan.

Why does there need to be a plan? Especially when 100% of the evidence indicates that there is no plan. Most atheist converts will tell you that they got along much better in life once they gave up on the illusion that there is some divine plan. What's wrong with the notion that we're all in the same boat, and once we're gone we only exist as memories in those who are still here? Why should that be depressing?
