Mainstream media will pile on 'conservative' label to Trump's Supreme Court pick, study shows

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

President Trump is scheduled to announce his nominee for the vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday evening, but the   mainstream media will harp on the fact   that the choice is conservative regardless of the selection, according to an examination of media coverage of the last six nominees.

From the moment that Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement last month, media members have been stoking fear that Trump’s replacement would outlaw abortions and turn America into a nation that shuns liberal ideology. The Hollywood elite has gotten involved, too, with the usual anti-Trump suspects   immediately entering crisis mode .

Now that Trump’s historic decision is only a few hours away, Rich Noyes, a senior editor at Media Research Center, wrote that it’s “easy to predict the liberal media’s spin” regardless of who Trump selects.

“As with all recent Republican nominees, reporters will repeatedly label them as ‘conservative,’ which will nicely reinforce the Democrats’ strategy to paint them as outside ‘the mainstream,’” Noyes wrote.

Noyes pointed out that Neil Gorsuch, Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts were all branded as conservatives – but not just regular conservatives. Adjectives such as “predictable,” ‘very,” “deeply” and “staunch” were typically tacked onto the label. Noyes added that there is nothing wrong with calling a conservative a conservative, but pointed out that liberal nominees don’t typically receive fancy adjectives when being described.

Noyes discovered that Democratic nominees were often described as “centrist” or “moderate,” while conservatives didn’t receive the same benefit. Republican nominees were never described as ‘centrist’ or ‘moderate,’” he wrote.

The MRC found that Roberts, Alito and Gorsuch were called “conservative” 36 times on ABC, CBS and NBC within 24 hours of their nomination, while Sotomayor, Kagan and Garland were only labeled “liberal” seven times total   using the same parameters

Simply put, media members really want viewers to know when a nominee is conservative but don’t particularly care when discussing a liberal – at least when it comes to the past six nominees.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid said on Sunday that the decision could lead to the “erosion” of everything from workers and voting rights to affirmative action. When discussing the candidates, Reid said that Barrett belongs to a “very, very conservative Catholic sect” to open a panel discussion that included a guest saying her religious group has “cult-like” tendencies.

CNN’s “New Day” broke down the candidates on Monday morning and Barrett was again singled out as “very conservative,” this time by legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin – who didn’t particularly have a different opinion about the other three candidates.

“The other three, I think all have very good chances of being nominees. I think their similarities are a lot bigger than their differences. They are all very conservative,” Toobin said.

I understand the word games used by the media. Make no mistake about it, this time they have a good reason to describe the next Justice as Conservative. This will mark the end of about 40 years of liberal judicial activism, which has provided liberals with the kind of social changes they could never have achieved through the ballot box. Progressives are now going to have to start winning congressional elections if they want to further their agenda the right way - through legislation!  However that is hard to do when ones policies involve tax hikes, the abolishment of ICE and getting transgenders into the ladies room!

Further reading:

NBC’s “Meet the Press” moderator Chuck Todd  tweeted that  “summer is going to suck,” predicting a “full-fledged political circus.”

“Will be interesting to see how some GOP senators rationalize the idea that it’s suddenly now ok to debate an open SCOTUS seat in an election year. They may fully pull that hypocrisy muscle,”  Todd tweeted  as critics were quick to remind him that this isn’t a “presidential” election year.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews was so fired up that   NewsBusters published a story   headlined, “Behold, the BEST Moments from Chris Matthews’s Hour-Long SCOTUS Meltdown on ‘Hardball.’” The site’s managing editor, Curtis Houck, wrote that Matthews was “off his rocker” all day following Kennedy’s announcement and opened his show “with over two and a half minutes of sheer panic.”

Houck then listed Matthews’ most eccentric comments, such as declaring that “there are times to fight and this is one of them.” Matthews reminded viewers that Republican majority leader Mitch McConnell refused to meet with President Barack Obama’s court nominee and called for Democrats to flip the script.

And ...

An MRC analysis of labels used on ABC, CBS and NBC morning and evening news shows during the 24 hours after each of the past six Supreme Court nominations demonstrates the pattern. GOP nominees John Roberts, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch were labeled by reporters as “conservative” a total of 36 times, while Democratic nominees Sonya Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Merrick Garland were called “liberal” a mere seven times — all on CBS.

In fact, there were more occasions (10) when reporters either denied that a Democratic nominee was liberal, or labeled them “centrist” or “moderate.” Republican nominees were never described as “centrist” or “moderate.”

Here’s a summary of how the broadcast networks treated each potential Justice’s ideology as they were introduced to the country:

What exactly is a "conservative"?

Conservative: adjective - holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion.

So one who "holds to traditional values" and is "cautious about change" would be someone who tends to support the status quo.

Status Quo: noun - the existing state of affairs, especially regarding social or political issues.

So what have "conservatives" fought to "conserve" since Americas founding?

Conservatives fought to defend the status quo of slavery, they fought against women and blacks being allowed to vote. They fought to defend segregation and Jim Crow laws that had become the status quo after slavery was abolished. Conservatives fought to maintain bans on interracial marriage that had been the status quo until the 1960's. Conservatives fought to defend bans on gay marriage and only recently lost that battle. Conservatives fought for corporations being allowed to spend as much as they want to influence elections with the "citizens united" ruling. Conservatives fought the civil rights act and the voting rights act. They continue to fight against a womans right to privacy including contraceptives and abortion. Only those upset with all the conservative battles lost are giddy with the prospect of putting another conservative extremist on the supreme court.

These stories are prewirtten.

All  Democratic nominees are moderate and pragmatic. All Republican nominees are  "staunchly conservative."

"Conservative label?"  What ever that is.

Uh, tax cuts to those who neither need them or deserve them?  Forced child birth by legal statute?  No environmental regulations that might interfere with profit?  No guardrails for The Banks and Financial Markets?

There are many more but these four are good starters.

No surprise that Trump picked the guy who thinks that "when the President does it that means it's not a crime."

Bingo, that is the top reason Trump picked this guy, the one thing everybody knows for sure, Trump always has his own best interests front and center.  He thinks this guy will help keep him safe.

He thinks this guy will help keep him safe.

Only way that happens is if he votes in trumps favor in cases chose and brought before the court that have to do with trump policies , other than that he can do nothing.

even in the case that IF impeachment proceedings are brought forth the only member of the court involved with that would be the chief justice , his honor John Roberts , to preside over the senate proceedings . so this nominee cant offer much "Protection".

That's why that comment was so stupid to begin with.......an understanding of how government works would be a great thing, prior to commenting on it.

A bit confused, that the selection would be a conservative was a given.

It seems pretty straightforward:

"Simply put, media members really want viewers to know when a nominee is conservative but don’t particularly care when discussing a liberal – at least when it comes to the past six nominee".

The media did not have to get involved nor attach a label, it was predetermined that the SCOTUS nominee would be a conservative by Mr. Trump.

Again, the point is that the media always labels conservative nominees conservative, but refuses to call liberal nominees  liberal.
