A Chinese New Year shopping trip in Chengdu, China
This article was originally posted more than two years ago, but now I have re-edited the photos and improved their presentation.
It was a fairly warm day for the end of February (2016), but still a little overcast. We decided to go to an area where the shops are plentiful and not expensive. There are lots of expensive department stores in major Chinese cities that house shops with international brand names like Rolex, Gucci, Clinique, Coach, Bally, etc. but we prefer to buy similar products at a fraction of the price that those stores charge.
- Typical shops
- A colourful storefront
- Many levels of stores
- Items that are attractive for the Chinese New Year
- Lantern Alley. I think it was along here that I purchased a superior cooking pot for about half what it cost in a regular shopping area.
- Kites for sale - It gets windy in the early Spring, and flying kites (which were, by the way invented in China) becomes a traditional pass-time.
- A typical flower shop
- For the young kids
- Drapery shop - hanging beads for between rooms (reminds me of my hippie days)
- So much colour - lanterns and other New Year decorations
- Then to a park for a restful stroll - Forsythia is a sure sign of Spring. After all those bright colours, this was a rest for the eyes.
- Time for a snack - sugar bread balls, 2 sticks of 5 on a stick for the equivalent of less than one US$ - delicious
- A flowering tree - not sure of the name
- Finally relax beside the rushing waters
If you enjoyed this tour, stay tuned for the next one.
Fascinating.
I almost get the sense of the outdoor shops remaining open 24/7. Moving the merchandise outside must be time consuming.
The kites are eye catching. The highest flying kite I had as a kid was a box kite. It flew only 1 time and had a hard landing and would never fly again.
Thank you.
