When "The Spirit" Moves You … Consider Going with It

Yesterday, I went out with my camera … happens a lot; the polarizer on the lens I was using displayed an annoying quirk I had experienced with it in the past (so why was I still using it … duh … I just ordered a new one).

To make a long story short, instead of trashing the images that were "compromised" by that polarizer, I exploited the possibilities of "workarounds" the too-dense image areas offered … and went from color to sepia, altered and cropped the originals, and, IMO, managed to produce something "spiritual."

But, you decide … feel free to critique away.

Sometimes it's good to screw up and work around the screw up.

In order to comment knowledgeably I would like to see the original photo before you did anything to it.

I understand the request, but, it's the "finished" image that either succeeds, fails … or … goes nowhere.

Okay then. Now I've seen an original below, and both photos above, I really like the effect you edited. The softer, very easy to spend moments looking at, finished product resembles a more impressionistic painting than a photo whereas the original displays a kind of harshness, especially the deep colour of the sky, which I know is caused by your polarizer, as I, myself, used a polarizer filter with my film cameras.

I can't comment with any knowledge on photography or these particular photos, but I do like them and that's what counts.

That sums it up quite well, Kavika. I like them all, too!

OK … decided to post one from the same run.

The overall image needs to be adjusted for shadow and color saturation … both of which are too "dense" because of the polarizer, particularly at the top of the sky. If you look closely around the tree, you can see a "halo" rather than a continuous tone transition from horizon to the top of the image.

Even with my transformation to sepia, I'm not crazy about the final result.

The new polarizer should arrive in a few days. There are a few images from yesterday's shoot that I like … will post some later.

That's an interesting photo. One could write a poem about it, but if you're looking for leaves on the ground.......

Dear Friend AMac: Reminds me when I wanted to document a poltergeist with a Kodak instamatic camera photo.

Picture never came out right.

The spirit was willing.

The flash was weak!
