'I know they all look alike': Hillary Clinton is catching heat for a joke she made about Cory Booker and Eric Holder
"Well, that was Eric Holder," Clinton said. "Yeah, I know they all look alike."

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

  • Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was criticized for making an insensitive remark that suggested former attorney general Eric Holder and Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, both of whom are African-American men, "all look alike."
  • Clinton, who made the comment during an interview, previously said it was "childish" to "paint with a broad brush; every immigrant is this, every African American is that."

Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was criticized for making an insensitive remark that suggested former attorney general Eric Holder and Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, both of whom are black, "all look alike."

Clinton asserted it was "childish" to "paint with a broad brush; every immigrant is this, every African American is that," as she discussed the Democratic Party's "political correctness," during an interview with Recode executive editor Kara Swisher in New York City on Saturday.

Swisher asked Clinton a question regarding a quip that was previously made by Holder, but mistook him for the junior senator from New Jersey: "What do you think of Corey Booker ... what do you think about him saying 'Kick them in the shins,' essentially?"

"Well, that was Eric Holder," Clinton said. "Yeah, I know they all look alike."

"No, they don't," Swisher responded.

The "kick them in the shins" remark Swisher referenced came from Holder, who made that comment during a Democratic campaign event in Georgia earlier in October. During the event, Holder modified former first lady Michelle Obama's infamous slogan, "When they go low, we go high."

"When they go low, we kick 'em," Holder said at the time, adding: "That's what this new Democratic Party is about."

Holder later qualified his quip by saying he was not encouraging people to do "anything inappropriate."

"We don't do anything illegal," Holder said.

Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump's son, pounced on Clinton's comment and compared it to the manner in which the news media covers controversial statements from the president.

"Imagine [President Donald Trump] said the exact same thing in the exact same way," Trump Jr. said on Twitter. "What would the media response be? Hysteria? Outrage? It would likely be beyond all that. Because I'm hearing crickets right now after Hillary said it. Wonder why."

The fact that this is not the top story of every media outlet speaks volumes.  I can only imagine the insanity that would be ensuing at this very moment had a Republican said this.

""What do you think of Corey Booker ... what do you think about him saying 'Kick them in the shins,' essentially?""Well, that was Eric Holder," Clinton said. "Yeah, I know they all look alike."

So she was joking not about black people all looking the same but that Kara Swisher couldn't tell them apart, which was true, she got the quote author wrong replacing one black Democrat with another. I'm sure I would have pointed out the same thing if some Republican friend started claiming Corey Booker said things that a different black American said. It's called sarcasm, but I guess some bigots just can't tell the difference between that and what they say all the time which is intentionally racist.

So sure, this can be the top story if you want it to, but it's not the story you imagine it to be.

deflection from what was said.

You're absolutely right, so many deflections from what was actually said, so let's examine that:

Kara Swisher - "What do you think of Corey Booker ... what do you think about him saying 'Kick them in the shins,' essentially?"

Hillary Clinton - "Well, that was Eric Holder, Yeah, I know they all look alike."

Well, it didn't take a /s at the end for me to hear the sarcasm. The interviewer just mixed up two black Democrats misattributing one of their comments to the other, and Hillary sarcastically points that out. Hillary wasn't the one who couldn't tell the two apart, Kara Swisher was, and knowing my penchant for sarcasm I probably would have said the exact same thing as Hillary to point it out. Do you really believe Hillary was stating "Yeah, I honestly think all black people look alike so I understand your confusion mixing up two black Democrats like that."? Really?

This is such a non-story it truly takes a mental contortionist to think this is in any way relevant or actually exposing anything negative or improper about Hillary Clinton no matter how much you want to hate her.

Swisher first starts to correct Clinton and then realizes she'd been had and says, "oh, good one."  It's amazing that rightwingers constantly put these things up they won't be vetted and immediately smacked down but then they wouldn't be rightwingers if they were as sloppy as they are desperate.

This article isn't about the half assed lame joke clinton said.

It is about the political imbalance in the media.

As 96 said in establishing the point of the article....

The fact that this is not the top story of every media outlet speaks volumes.  I can only imagine the insanity that would be ensuing at this very moment had a Republican said this.

I picked your comment cause you are one of the more even handed of the progressive liberals on the site. Given that is what you are perceived as, I think your statement is exquisite proof of the premise....

Most Liberals would be suffering from head explosions if T-Rump or any republican made a sarcastic crack like that anywhere.

But when a famous and powerful liberal does it? "this is such a non-story...."

Thank you for proving the premise of the article is extremely accurate....

Kinda like blacks using the "N" word amongst themselves as a term of endearment, familiarity or brotherhood. Liberals can excuse it amongst there own but condemn anyone not in their circle doing the same...

That is the absolute definition of bias.....(destroys the validity of the so called insult)

I disagree, if this were Sarah Huckabee being interviewed where the interviewer asked, "Do you think it's a great idea to have the guy who was rambling about new policy based on "9-9-9" running HUD?" to which Sarah then replies "Well, that was Herman Cain, not Ben Carson, Yeah, I know they all look alike.". I know I wouldn't have taken that to be a racist comment. Even coming from the Huckster you couldn't miss the sarcasm.

So the comment is a nothing-burger and there is no double standard being applied to conservatives that isn't applied to liberals and progressives.

It's a verifiable fact that former Southern segregationists left the Democratic party (i.e., Dixiecrats)  and began populating Republican party soon after the CRAs of the mid-1960s were passed.* It actually began in 1964 when Goldwater, who broke with republicans and voted against the 1964 CRA, carried GA, AL, MS and LA -- going R for the first time since the Civil War.   Nixon's "Southern Strategy" was based on that startling shift  and used it successfully to get elected in 1968 and Reagan capitalized even greater in 1980.  Sometimes a "sweeping generalization" is accurate and this is one of them.  The earliest and most famous of the converts to the Republican party were the notoriously segregationist Thurmond (SC) and Helms (NC).  The 1976 presidential election of southerner Carter was the last time the South voted  en bloc  Democratic.  Just 4 years later, the Southern Strategy having been perfected by Lee Atwater* and Ronald Reagan, only his native state of GA went for Carter in the South.  Clinton never got more than 4 of the 10 formerly confederate states in his two elections and one of them was his home state.  The House and Senate southern caucuses as well as southern state governments have also been dominated by Republicans for over two decades.

*As he was nearing death from brain cancer, Atwater publicly apologized for his use of blatantly racist campaign tactics:''

The truth that people seem to like avoid is, if anyone on the right said somehtign like that, it would be an uproar, protest marches, lawsuits by the ACLU, The SPLC would condemn them and the outrage would lakst for months.

But Hillary says it and it's old news, nothing to be bothered with.  That speaks volumes for those on the left.

Unfortunately I have to agree (I just agreed with Junior, oh my), but really do you really think they feel any different about any of us. We are mere pissants to these people, a simple means to their ends.

That aside, yes had Mr. Trump made such a statement the media would have light up like a Christmas tree.

The  Squonk  is a  mythical creature  reputed to live in the  Hemlock  forests of northern  Pennsylvania  in the  United States . [1] [2]  Legends of squonks probably originated in the late nineteenth century, at the height of Pennsylvania's importance in the potential  timber  industry.

Democrats hoped for a Blue Wave so forceful that they could claim the majority in the House early in the evening. That has not happened, though they still expect that majority to emerge. Early wins among the 23 seats that Democrats need to flip include Donna Shalala and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in Florida, and Jennifer Wexton in Virginia

watching AP map , and it says gop still ahead in the house but there are 7 states that are not reporting results yet count according to AP is gop 142 dem 133 for the house so that is still pretty much a toss up , the senate looks to be a gop gain if things on the AP map hold  with the gop with 54 seats and the dems 44

of the states electing govenors  if things hold , it will be 25 to 19 with 6 states I am guessing 3 will go dem , 2 will go gop and 1 is a toss up and can go either way

false blue wave expectations? I know that wave didn't make it to wyo , even the dem I did vote for lost .

It's the way the Founders set it up I think. Trump isn't in this one but, it means with the Democrats taking the House that they can investigate him, they have subpoena (spelling) power to get what they need for the investigations, like Trumps tax returns.

It also has to do with the length of terms each serves , house reps serve 2 year terms so are voted for every 2 years  and every 2 years they are all voted on, senators serve 6 year terms , and it is set up every 2 years  a third of senators come up for re elections , of course presidents are every 4 years due to term length.

He can't get "booted" unless he has done something illegal or, has committed treason and, it can be proven, then he can be impeached, otherwise we have to wait until 2020. Mueller is investigating the Russian antics during the 2016 election and, seeing what was done there and, who was involved, if there is a direct line between those we know are involved and, Trump then the House can take action, the problem now is, if the House brings articles of impeachment will the Senate, which is Republican controlled try Trump?

Arizona maintains a Republican governor in Doug Ducey and gains a Republican Senator in Martha MacSally.

That race has not been called but nice (read: desperate) try.

GOP Rep.  Martha McSally  held a narrow lead of less than 15,000 votes over Democratic Rep.  Kyrsten Sinema  early Wednesday morning as the secretary of state there waits on just 11 more precincts out of 1,489 to report their results. Absentee and provisional ballots will also add to the vote totals in Arizona over the next few days.

Let's look at the context, shall we:

Swisher asked Clinton a question regarding a quip that was previously made by Holder, but mistook him for the junior senator from New Jersey: "What do you think of Corey Booker ... what do you think about him saying 'Kick them in the shins,' essentially?" "Well, that was Eric Holder," Clinton said. "Yeah, I know they all look alike."

So, Clinton was using sarcasm toward the moron interviewer who's the one who confused Booker with Holder and the rightwing pukefunnel, it having just the lie as its one-trick pony,  tries to turn it upside down.   Big FAIL again here.

The Dems projected blue wave turned into a ripple by the time it reached the Senate!

Is it ignorance or extreme partisanship that makes rightwingers say such ridiculous things.  Here's the reality:

Of the 13 unresolved House races, Democrats lead or look like they’re in good position in 10 of them. Here’s the full lowdown:
  • Five of the races are in   California : specifically, the   10th, 39th, 45th, 48th  and   49th   districts . It’s not unusual for close races in California to still be uncalled even a couple days after the election. That’s because mail ballots in California only have to be   postmarked by Election Day ; they can arrive at elections offices as late as Friday and still be counted. Since   so many people   in California vote by mail, that means that thousands of ballots are probably still in transit. Currently, the Republican candidates have leads of 2 percentage points in three of the five districts. However, late-arriving ballots tend to   lean Democratic in California , so those GOP leads will probably shrink, if not reverse entirely. (They have   already shown signs of shrinking .) Because of this, we’re guessing that Democrats might win most, if not all, of these districts when all is said and done. The Democratic candidate already leads in two of them, including the California 49th, which the Associated Press has   called   for Democrat Mike Levin.
  • Although some networks have called the   Georgia 7th District , Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux has   not yet conceded   and has even   indicated   it may go to a recount. Republican Rep. Rob Woodall has a lead of   less than 1,000 votes   with about   1,500 provisional ballots   left to count in Gwinnett County and   90 in Forsyth County .
  • With most of the vote counted in the   Maine 2nd District , Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin has   declared   he received more votes than Democratic state Rep. Jared Golden — but neither received a majority, so Maine’s new system of   ranked-choice voting   will decide the winner. A computer program will redistribute the votes of the two last-place finishers, independents William Hoar and Tiffany Bond, between Poliquin and Golden based on who was ranked higher on their voters’ ballots. At that point, whoever has a majority of the remaining votes will win the congressional seat. Golden is probably favored in this scenario; both Bond and Hoar indicated in a debate that they would prefer Golden over Poliquin, and   exit polls   suggest their voters agreed. The counting will likely begin on Friday, and a state official said he expects it to last “ a few days .” But it might not end there: If Poliquin loses the ranked-choice tabulations to Golden, he has   left the door open   to a court challenge.
  • Republican Rep. Tom MacArthur and Democrat Andy Kim are locked in an uncertain battle in the   New Jersey 3rd District . From Tuesday into Wednesday, the two traded leads of 2,000+ votes. Kim   declared victory on Wednesday night, but MacArthur has not yet given up. Mail ballots were   still arriving   as of Thursday, and at least 2,000 provisional ballots remain to be counted, which won’t happen until Nov. 14.
  • The   New Mexico 2nd District   was supposedly in the bag for Republican state Rep. Yvette Herrell —   until Wednesday night , when absentee ballots from Doña Ana County unexpectedly put Democrat Xochitl Torres Small into a 1-percentage-point lead. That was enough for the   AP to call the race , although our colleagues at ABC haven’t made a projection yet.
  • Like in Georgia, some but not all news outlets have called the   New York 22nd   for Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi. However, Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney   isn’t ready to concede . A technical error was discovered Thursday that narrowed Brindisi’s margin to just   1,293 votes . And there are still   17,000 absentee and military ballots   to be counted.
  • In the   New York 27th District , Republican Rep. Chris Collins appears to have defeated Democratic Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray. ABC has projected the race, and even McMurray conceded on Tuesday night. However, McMurray has now   retracted his concession , arguing that 18,000 uncounted ballots could reverse Collins’s almost-3,000 vote lead.
  • It’s been a   roller-coaster ride   in the   Texas 23rd District . Republican Rep. Will Hurd initially declared victory, but then a late spurt of ballots put Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones into the lead. Then an apparent error in the vote tabulations was found, giving Hurd the advantage once more. He   currently   has a lead of over 1,000 votes, but Ortiz Jones   says   she will not concede until every vote has been counted.
  • Despite what President Trump   said   at his Wednesday press conference, Republican Rep. Mia Love has not yet lost in the   Utah 4th District   — although she trails Democratic Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams by a sizable   3 percentage points . The reason no projection has been made is that it may   take up to two weeks   to count all the mail ballots in the race. There are about   90,000 votes   left to count in Salt Lake County (McAdams’s political base) and   72,000 in Utah County   (Love’s base), although not all of them are in the 4th District. The next update in Salt Lake County is at 3 p.m. local time on Friday; in Utah County, we may have to wait until   Tuesday .
That means Dems are poised to win very nearly the upper range of the predicted highest number of House seat (+39) before the election.   Add to that, winning 7 of the 8 red state governors' races and picking up NV and AZ Senate seats which blunts the losses in ND, IN, and MO and  around 300 state legislative gains.  Yeah, just a "ripple" that inundated republicans everywhere in the country.
