44 Former U.S. Senators Write Group Letter Saying "We Are Entering A Dangerous Period"

44 Former US Senators , including well known names such as Joe Lieberman, Bill Bradley, Sam Nunn, and Richard Lugar have written an open, bipartisan , letter announcing their concern over the state of affairs in the Congress amid the current political turmoil.

We are on the eve of the conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation and the House’s commencement of investigations of the president and his administration. The likely convergence of these two events will occur at a time when simmering regional conflicts and global power confrontations continue to threaten our security, economy and geopolitical stability.

It is a time, like other critical junctures in our history, when our nation must engage at every level with strategic precision and the hand of both the president and the Senate.

We are at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake, and the rule of law and the ability of our institutions to function freely and independently must be upheld.

The senators appear to be warning the American people concerning possible actions of the President against constitutional principles and the national security of the United States.

We are former senators. The Senate has long stood in defense of democracy — and must again.

Dear Senate colleagues,

As former members of the U.S. Senate, Democrats and Republicans, it is our shared view that we are entering a dangerous period, and we feel an obligation to speak up about serious challenges to the rule of law, the Constitution, our governing institutions and our national security.

During our service in the Senate, at times we were allies and at other times opponents, but never enemies. We all took an oath swearing allegiance to the Constitution. Whatever united or divided us, we did not veer from our unwavering and shared commitment to placing our country, democracy and national interest above all else.

At other critical moments in our history, when constitutional crises have threatened our foundations, it has been the Senate that has stood in defense of our democracy. Today is once again such a time.

Regardless of party affiliation, ideological leanings or geography, as former members of this great body, we urge current and future senators to be steadfast and zealous guardians of our democracy by ensuring that partisanship or self-interest not replace national interest.

To be honest John, I think this is a good thing but, I have to also add that I don't think it will do a bit of good. There's at least 38% of Americans and, 52 Senators in Congress that are so far up Trumps butt that all they can see is the MAGA hat on their heads.

The real threat to our nation is the tyranny of the Democrats against our Constitutional Republic. Like all extreme statists they only care about exercising power over the citizens

their only solutions are ALWAYS more government, more taxes, more regulations, more forced collectivism

Obviously , the purpose of this letter is to warn Americans that the president* might try and go outside of norms, rules and even laws to protect himself and his family.

The real threat to our nation is the tyranny of the Democrats against our Constitutional Republic.

From what I can tell, less than 1% of American citizens share your extremist opinion. Your views aren't even shared by Faux & Fiends. So either 99% of Americans are the supposed evil socialists you accuse them of being or you're creating your own bizarre straw man out of American citizens and burning it in effigy. Considering only a handful of others, mostly sovereign citizens, have bothered to show up at your opinion bonfire, and everyone else is silently laughing at the ridiculousness of the opinions premise, I'm going to bet it's the opinion that is truly flawed, not 99% of American citizens who disagree with you.

Those who have never known true liberty often are satisfied living under the tyranny of government

"The state remains, as it was in the beginning, the common enemy of all well-disposed, industrious and decent men.” ~H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)

"The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man ; but only to have the law of nature for his rule."-

If men through fear, fraud or mistake, should in terms renounce and give up any essential natural right, the eternal law of reason and the great end of society, would absolutely vacate such renunciation; the right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, it is not in the power of Man to alienate this gift, and voluntarily become a slave "

Samuel Adams November 1772

Great idea, However in reality some men if left alone would pollute the rest of us out of existence for their own power and or profit.  For starters.

More people, more problems, more laws, more government. Want less government ? Stop producing more people.

And those who've never know the protection of a strong military and a federal reserve bank keeping their monetary system relatively stable dream of living under the protections of a Democratic Constitutional Republic like we have in America.

Of course, it's by no means perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than the vast majority of governments on the planet and it's filled with millions of intelligent, educated, hard working, selfless Americans working hard to make this a more perfect union. Sure, we also have about 30% of Americans who have self identified as "deplorables" who proudly display their homophobia, Islamaphobia, racism and misogyny, but much like a drowning man who pops up to the surface a few last times to gasp for breath, that part of America has briefly bobbed to the surface. This only happened after being inflated by Trump and his overabundance of hot air, but these folk have been around a very long time as has that rancid part of our racist slaver roots, but that part of America is shrinking. Just a little more than half a century ago we had half of voters literally voting for segregation.

And it only feels like tyranny when there's a lunatic like Trump running things and throwing temper tantrums like he did this morning threatening a government shut down if he doesn't get his way.

Does this liberty also apply to women who are being subjected to "the will or legislative authority of man"?  Why should any woman be subjected to the political / religious tyranny of man?

Or is this only a cherry-picked quote to advance a political agenda about the rights of some men with a political/religious agenda  to deny rights to other men and women who have a different political/religious agenda?

Before I can comment on your interpretation, how about we examine the complete full statement you take that snippet from?

We are at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake, and the rule of law and the ability of our institutions to function freely and independently must be upheld.

so your only referencing the last half of the complete sentence.... which is only part of the complete point of their statement....

So are you saying that you get to cherry pick their statement and then impute your meanings to them? a fine example of twisting and propagandizing this into something it does not mean....

So lets take it back to what they are really trying to say when employing this snippet.... (in context of course)

After making a statement of the current situation about to unfold.... they use three sentences to convey their point....

These three sentences....

It is a time, like other critical junctures in our history, when our nation must engage at every level with strategic precision and the hand of both the president and the Senate.

The two branches must work together, there specific exclusion of the House is a direct statement that this message is to the incoming House of Representatives. (that democrat majority house of representatives that is threatening to do noting but investigate in a political attack on the presidency)

We are at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake, and the rule of law and the ability of our institutions to function freely and independently must be upheld.

What the mean by inflection point is a confluence of many things coming together that are going to challenge the ideals we as a nation hold dear and those ideals should be more important than petty partisan demands obstructing the government from functioning.

During our service in the Senate, at times we were allies and at other times opponents, but never enemies. We all took an oath swearing allegiance to the Constitution. Whatever united or divided us, we did not veer from our unwavering and shared commitment to placing our country, democracy and national interest above all else.

This last statement is them stating unequivocally that the job of actually running the government is more important than the politics and the political feeding frenzy to the exclusion of what they were charged with by the voters.... Running this nation for the benefit of everyone.... Not just for those of a specific political bent. They took an oath to do this and set aside partisan hate, the other side are our brothers and we need to remain a family and a nation.

Finally the nation and it's citizens should be the paramount interest for all entering into such an oath.....

They are trying to tell the incoming majority democrats in the house that they need to set aside their political zeal and work to heal the divide certain political leaders have invested their followers with and work together to build and not destroy....

Any questions?

That also means that 48 senators have their heads up the Dem leaders ass.

Or, it means that 48 Senators are actually working for the American people, you know, the 99% of Americans who Trump doesn't really like but, wishes he could get to vote for him? The other one percent are friends and, cronies of Trump who want to maintain control of the government through payoffs, lies and, scandals and, then of course there is Putin's faction which wants to keep Trump in office as long as he is causing trouble for the Republic.

Actually John this is clearly an erroneous interpretation of what they are doing with this letter. It comes from wearing politically tinted glasses when reading things for way to long...

To me they are making a clear statement that we need to be working together, not running every investigation under the sun to undermine the very fabric of our nation....

What a very convenient excuse when it's your favored party being investigated. Were you saying the same after one or two Benghazi investigations, let alone eight? It seems when Republicans want to investigate Democrats it's not only a good thing, it's a matter of the survival of our very constitutional republic. But when Democrats want to investigate Republican malfeasance, Republicans start complaining about how investigations waste valuable time and money and might even "undermine the fabric of our nation". What would truly undermine the fabric of our nation is allowing a president or his staff to conspire with an enemy foreign government, giving in to authoritarian demands and a promise to lift sanctions in exchange for surreptitious aid in winning the election. The Russians basically did exactly the same thing Nixon's plumbers did, they broke in and stole sensitive DNC campaign documents. The only difference is Nixon's plumbers got caught before they could make use of the stolen DNC documents while Trump and Russia didn't get caught till after the election.

The senators appear to be warning the American people concerning possible actions of the President against constitutional principles and the national security of the United States.

Reading that with blinders on is the only way to have that as your only takeaway.  They actually named congress and the President's office while telling the senate that they should be acting in the itnerests of country, not in the interests of self, which is exactly what the democrats in (and coming into) Congress are already openly talking.  Not about governing, but about how we're going to go and get him.  At what point do the American people they were elected to represent start factoring in?

As former members of the U.S. Senate, Democrats and Republicans, it is our shared view that we are entering a dangerous period, and we feel an obligation to speak up about serious challenges to the rule of law, the Constitution, our governing institutions and our national security.

They are warning that the end of the Mueller investigation and the beginning of House investigations into the Trump administration are a "dangerous period".   Now why would that be?  What "danger" is proposed by law enforcement and the House of Representatives doing their jobs?  The "danger" they are warning is the reaction of the president.

And they are warning of the incomign Democratic majority in Congress.  They are asking all to be the leaders they were elected to be, not the self-absorbed, non-nation leading idiots the Democrats have promised to be in the next session of congress.

Your twist of the words, notwithstanding.  You can read into their letter wahtever you want, it doesn't meant that's what they said or meant.
