The average American man is 5'9" and 198 lbs, and the average American woman is 5'4", 171 lbs.
The average American adult male is 9 pounds heavier than he was just 18 years ago, and the average American adult female is 7 pounds heavier in the same time span.

The average American is on the edge of borderline obese.

What perhaps is more troubling though, is that these average weights are rising rapidly.  The average American adult male is 9 pounds heavier than he was just 18 years ago, and the average American adult female is 7 pounds heavier in the same time span.

I did an image search using these heights and weights, and here is the shape of the "average " man and woman.

(Bloomberg) -- The average American is heavier than at the start of the 21st Century -- and very close to being obese, according to Centers for Disease Control data on body metrics.

The average American man is 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighs 198 pounds; an average woman is 5-feet, 4-inches and 171 pounds, based on CDC data. That compares with 189.1 pounds and 163.6, respectively, at the start of the century.

A man of average height is considered overweight between 169 and 202 pounds and obese above 202 pounds. A woman of average height is considered overweight between 140 and 174 and obese above 175 pounds. The average non-Hispanic white American male weighs 202.2 pounds.

The Obesity Society , a scientific research organization, this month classified obesity as a worldwide, non-communicable chronic disease. “Obesity meets all criteria for being a disease, and therefore, should be characterized as such,“ said Cathy Kotz, the society’s vice president and a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Body Mass Index

In 2015–2016, age-adjusted mean body mass index -- a measure of body fat based on height and weight -- rose to 29.1 for men and 29.6 for women from 27.8 for men and 28.2 for women during 1999–2000. A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. A person is considered obese at 30 and above.

The body mass index for men and women is the same until about age 40 and then increases at a faster rate among women.

Holiday Spread

Keeping weight off during the holidays is a challenge.

Americans tend to add about 0.4 percent to their weight within 10 days after Christmas Day and 0.2 percent gained during the Thanksgiving holiday, according to a separate study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2016.

We are what we eat.

Low fat = mega sodium

Even "Lean Meat" = mega injected hormone levels

What isn't loaded up with "high fructose corn syrup"?

Tomatoes are genetically engineered...some animal genes?

Sometimes the most exercise some get is back spacing out a line.

I wonder what this obesity problem is all about anyhow?

LOL.

I am also 6'1" and have been, though 1 doctors office had me at 5'11"??? Never been backed up. I tend to think they were part of some BMI BS thing.

Been 210 - 220 (season dependent) for many years. Wrestled at "185", but was that lone wrestler who had to put on weight instead of lose weight because half the time had to wrestle these guys at 275 and above.

One thing I will say about this size, can wear (and get away with wearing) better looking clothing than the bigger brethren.

Wow! Now I feel porky. Kinda.

I'm 6' and 240 but if I get near 190 I look sickly. 225/230 is my best fit. 54"chest and no neck...actually it's 20" my shirts have to be tailored, if I buy off the rack the rest of my shirt is one big kite.

I was a gym rat up until about 5 years ago, my friend owns a scrap yard and when I feel the need I go there and sling metal around.

They teased me when I worked at the prison.."you're not made to run to the door, you're made to run through the door"

My wife is 4' 11" and couldn't break 100 if she was holding bricks.

I come from short people also.  I have no idea how I shot to 5'9" by the sixth grade.  Except for a half sister (5'10" - her dad was 6'6"), the rest of my family is 5'4" or under.  At family reunions I look like Snow White and 50 demented dwarfs.

dependant on whose tape you believe , the government or the drs , I am either 6'4" or 6'3" ( personally due to age and shrinkage its more like 6'2")  and if that lying scale in the bathroom is to be believed 210 lbs, it generally sits in the corner until it apologizes , ahabit I picked up from the ex wife. as for BMI , it varies dependant on the season , but generally hover between 20% and 24 % right now its my high end season , have always put on and held about 10 more pounds in the winter than in the summer months.

I've always been measured since High School as 6'-0.5" (yeah 16 years old and 6' -190lbs, no wonder they wanted me on the football team) until last year when the doc measured me as 5' - 11" usually ran around 220-230 most of my life and could work most into the ground in a 12 hr day.

Today it's reversing, shorter and wider..... and the frame has weakened quite a bit, but I can still get it done if needed to, but for no where near 12 hours anymore..... (my heart would bitch slap me and yell "what were you thinking")

And life marches on, the only constant in human existence....
