Trump, Conservatives, and Human Rights
During his short presidency, President Trump has downplayed human rights, preferring to emphasize American economic and military interests abroad. He has sought to develop close ties with autocratic Arab rulers and invited human rights abusers such as Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte to the White House. Yet the administration has not totally sidelined human rights concerns, either, as seen in the responses to Syrian chemical weapons attacks.

While his “America First” campaign seemed tailor-made for an emphasis on national interests at the expense of human rights, Trump’s ambivalence on human rights also reflects a broader trend among conservatives, who increasingly view human rights suspiciously, seeing their promotion as a liberal ideological project that encompasses an expanding number of rights and undercuts fundamental conservative values. This is evident most clearly in domestic debates, where liberal rights activism has been heavy-handed.

Over the last few decades, the human rights project has become increasingly progressive, advocating a singular way of living the good life, with a concomitant demotion of values that don’t fit in, such as those associated with religious belief or with social institutions such as families, churches, schools, local communities, and clubs. This shift has spurred a backlash among conservatives, as evidenced by   First Things   editor R. R. Reno’s statement that he is “Against Human Rights.” 1

I did and it is still a crock, even though I was referring primarily to your fist post #1. My post above stands. It seems you just cannot stomach the fact that other people do not agree with your worldview and damn all conservatives and Republicans into one category just to justify yourself. Post #1 is a perfect example. You really need to deal with your anger issues, they will ruin your health...

The right wing is owned/controlled/compromised by Putin's oligarchy.  This is the propaganda.

Trump is 'used goods.'  His time is rapidly passing.

I don't have that kind of access but it seems like Trump has had little trouble making plenty of money in the U.S.

Republicans believe that everyone should be self sufficient and that there are no free handouts.  The problem with this position is that they don't recognize everyone isn't on an equal playing field.  They refuse to acknowledge there is a gap in equality and opportunity.

If the republicans had a mascot it would be Scrooge.

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge.

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

Typical black and white liberal logic. Republicans support social safety nets. We just don't support unlimited giveaways that eliminate human motivation.

Cerenkov - I'm always tickled when I can pull more than 3 or 4 words out of you.

Whether you recognize it or not, Trump has re-branded the republican party.  They are no longer viewed as fiscally responsible, champions for the military, reliable or solid.  They are fractured and wishy washy with no backbone or spine to stand up for what is right.  You can also thank your freedom caucus for this.  They have been no help in moving the country forward, only backwards.

It is far more black and white then your realize.

Perhaps you should research the net worth of Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, and Maxine Waters just to name a few. The majority of their fortunes were made while sitting politicians in DC.

I was referring solely to Don's comment in #3.13 about Republicans taking away money from the lowest people to pad their own pockets. Pelosi, Feinstein, and Waters have gotten very rich/richer while in office probably doing the same thing.

During his short presidency, President Trump has downplayed human rights,

so they say.

  meanwhile... back in reality

Since the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20th, 2017, the number of trafficking arrests for human trafficking in 2017 have doubled the total numbers provided for the entire year of 2014

actions not words.

cheers :)

Trump hasn't really struck me as anti-human rights. When he was running, for example, on the gender issue of bathrooms, he felt like it could have been left alone and it was a bad idea to start passing laws controlling the bathrooms.

Being rude in one way doesn't make you evil in all things.
