An end to the shutdown depends entirely on Trump’s hurt feelings
We’re heading into the sixth day of a government shutdown that is just beginning to hurt the 800,000 federal workers who are impacted. Everyone seems dug in to their position. So how does this end?

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Let’s not forget that last week the Senate  passed  a funding bill that could have easily passed the House, and by all accounts, Trump was ready to sign it. But then Fox News hosts began criticizing him for not demanding funding for a border wall, and like a schoolyard bully who hears the crowd saying “What are ya, a wimp?," he decided that he had to shut down the government or risk humiliation.

Trump is simply having a trumpertantrum, what he doesn't realize or, refuses to accept is, when Pelosi takes up the hammer on the third she will simply take the bill that came over from the Senate and, have the House vote on it finally and, then return it to the Senate before it goes to Trump and, if he refuses to sign, she has the votes in the House to override his veto.

Do you understand how our system works?

Bills don't pass over between Congresses. No Senate bill will exist when Pelosi is sworn in.

she has the votes in the House to override his veto.

She does? 50 Republicans from the Trumpiest districts in the country are going to vote to override a Trump veto?

And which 20 Republican Senators in the Senate will override a Trump veto?

Donald Trump could stop demanding that his border wall be funded as a rider and just pass continued government funding with clean legislation, but he refuses to do that.

Yeah, I understand it. Do you understand that the House just went Democratic by 40 extra representatives which I believe will give them what they need? The Republicans that are left have to use some logic, yes, their far Rightwing supporters might be angry with them but, the majority of people voted out those Republicans who were challenged by a Democrat this time around, they will consider if voting against Trump in this fight is better for their chances at reelection or, worse and, I think they will come to a decision that it will help their chances in 2020.

Was it written in disappearing ink?

The CR passed by the Senate was an AMENDMENT to a prior appropriations bill and in the most part merely stuck the prior expiration date and inserted a new one. It's in the Congressional Record for all to see. If Pelosi wishes, the EXACT SAME WORDING can be brought to the floor of the House in MINUTES after Pelosi takes the gavel.

It would be pretty hypocritical for McConnell to refuse to take a vote on a CR that HE wrote and that the Senate passed by VOICE VOTE, don't ya think?

As for overriding Trump's veto, who actually thinks he has the gonads to veto? Not I.

Actually I think a more likely scenario is that after the House voters on it, it will go to the Senate-- where it will die.

It will never even reach the president's desk.

The Senate won't pass it-- so it won't ever even reach the President.

Regardless of the number of potential votes for or against it if the Senate even ever had a chance to vote on it. (Which it won't until 2020 elections).

Why?

Fact: Because McConnell's policy is that when he feels a bill would not be signed by the president, he will not allow it to even come to the floor for a vote!

Trump is under no obligation to sign any spending bill Congress puts forward. Didn't hear any bitching from the left when Obama didn't sign.

It is up to Congress now to come up with a spending bill, or budget, he will sign. Good luck with that.

Seems that some people don't understand that.

Damn, I forced to defend Trump that I hate yet again. But the TDS has gotten to be too much.

There is this nice thing about both Houses right now, the Republicans in the senate are getting tired of Trumps antics and, none of them think the wall is a good political move right now so, they will override any veto of the bill, it will pass.

Its still a republican controlled congress. Trump is forcing the issue because he knows that when the dems take control, his, "wall" funding will never happen. Unfortunately for trump, recent polls show that support for trump wall is very weak.

Besides...trump said that the shutdown is all on him.

And, Ryan and, McConnell have said that the Congress will not officially meet again until after the New Year so, that should tell Trumps supporters what the Republicans think of Trump.

Unfortunately for trump, recent polls show that support for trump wall is very weak.

Last I saw on it only about 37% of Americans support the wall, sounds like the Trump base are the only ones who want it.

Besides...trump said that the shutdown is all on him.

Exactly, even Republicans in the Senate are saying that the wall is a stupid idea and, that the shutdown was even dumber and, they are looking forward to working with the Democrats on opening the government back up.

That same 5 billion could make life changes of people who would really need it, if spent correctly.

  • Use it to pay down part of the Trump deficit.
  • Use it to give our servicemen some of the raise that Trump lied to them about.
  • Use it to help keep some of Trump's kidnapped children on the border alive.
  • Use it to start repaying the social security fund.
  • Use it towards the infrastructure projects that Trump lied about.
  • Hell, use it for Trump's membership to "Hair Club for Men"!

That's funny LFOD, I thought that we were in a PARTIAL shutdown. I must be wrong because you insist that the Democrats refuse to agree to ANY GOP House budget.

He needs to put separate legislation forth for his wall and stop trying to hold up continued funding for the government to try to fund his mistake. Trump's wall will be remembered in the same way as the Berlin wall.

If his supporters want this wall so bad, there is GoFundMe or Patreon for their dollars.

I don't think you understand what the purpose of the Berlin wall was.  The Berlin Wall was necessary to keep citizens from fleeing the socialist paradise of East Germany, not to keep West Germans from illegally entering the nirvana that was East Germany.

If Democrats win the next few elections, they'll end up wanting a wall to keep Americans in America. Without a wall, people flee socialist countries as fast as they can.

Trump's only asking Democrats to do what they  overwhelmingly voted for in  2007.

The first responsibility of the federal government is defense of the Republic.

we should do as the law allows.   If someone invades my property I have the right to shoot intruders. The same with our borders. The word would quickly spread and illegal invaders would stop overnight.

and yes it’s Christian.  Jesus told us to buy a weapon for self defense

Luke 22:35,36

And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

Well you have a right to your opinion-- as uninformed as it might be.

In fact, what you claimed is not only false, but is actually 180 degrees in opposition to what Trump himself said!

Here's what Trump himself said about who's responsible for the shutdown:

256

You know what I'll say? If we don't get what we want, one way or the other, I will shut down the government.

(At this point Schumer replies "OK, fair enough")

Then Trump continues:

And I am proud and I'll tellya what:  I am proud to shut down the government for border security Chuck.

So I will take the mantle. I will shut it down I'm not gonna blame you for it.

As long as we have manned and armed border checkpoints at the road crossings we do not have open borders with Mexico.  You want to build a wall akin to the concrete Israeli/Palestine wall and are trying to criticize anything less than that idea as supporting open borders, when the reality is that your idea doesn't address how most undocumented immigrants come into the US.

Guess again.

In fiscal 2017, the Border Patrol made 130,454 apprehensions of Mexicans, a sharp drop from a peak of 1.6 million apprehensions in 2000. The decline in apprehensions reflects the decrease in the number of unauthorized Mexican immigrants coming to the U.S.

It is fiscally irresponsible to spend $5 billion dollars building a wall on the border when there isn't a serious problem that will be addressed by the wall.  Most of the immigrants come into the country legally and overstay their vias, but that problem won't be addressed by the wall. Donald Trump is playing on his supporter's xenophobic fears and the personal failures to blame their problems on immigrants, so somehow they believe that their life will get better if we build the stupid wall.

Trump is scapegoating Hispanic immigrants like Hitler did with the Jews and his supporters are eating it up.

Treason seems to have a very liquid definition for some.  It's treason, to some, to vote against what will likely be an ineffective but expensive border security measure.  It's also treason, to some, for a TV comedy show host to opine that Donald Trump in beholden to Russia, and that that might make him likely to act in Russia's best interests rather than our own.

Actually acting in Russia's best interests rather than our own is ok, though.

Some seem to think that disloyalty to or disagreement with Trump, rather than the United States of America, is treason.

Dangerous, IMO.
