'F**k These Homophobes': Karen Pence Demonized for Teaching at Christian School
America's second lady has a long track record in teaching. As her office noted, Karen Pence spent 25 years teaching elementary school before she became first lady of Indiana in January 2013. While Mike Pence served in Congress, she spent 12 years teaching art at Immanuel Christian School. She is also a watercolor artist. On Tuesday, Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, announced that she would return to teaching art at Immanuel Christian School. HuffPost researched the school and learned that it abides by traditional Christian sexual morality. Cue the outrage. On Wednesday, which coincidentally was Religious Freedom Day, liberal media outlets, LGBT groups, and even a congressman slammed Karen Pence for her decision to work at the school.

"F**k these homophobes!" feminist activist Amy Siskind tweeted.   "Totally insane: Karen Pence is working at a school that bans LGBTQ employees," declared Matt McDermott, director at the marketing firm Whitman Insight Strategies .

Liberal blogger Bill Palmer suggested that Pence's decision to teach at Immanuel Christian School made her "unfit" even to "be around kids."

"Mike Pence is an extremist bigot. Karen Pence is an extremist bigot," Palmer tweeted. "She's unfit to even be around kids, let alone teach them. Anyone willing to allow their kid to be taught by a dangerous monster like Karen Pence is unfit to be a parent. Ask me how I really feel."

America's second lady has a long track record in teaching. As her office noted , Karen Pence spent 25 years teaching elementary school before she became first lady of Indiana in January 2013. While Mike Pence served in Congress, she spent 12 years teaching art at Immanuel Christian School. She is also a watercolor artist.

On Tuesday night, HuffPost education reporter Rebecca Klein dug up a pledge Immanuel Christian School requires its prospective employees to sign. To anyone familiar with traditional Christian sexual morality, the pledge should seem rather unremarkable.

As  The Washington Post reported , the pledge involves a commitment "to live a personal life of moral purity."

"I understand that the term ‘marriage’ has only one meaning; the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive covenant union as delineated in Scripture," the section says, saying that God intended sexual acts to occur only between "a man and a woman who are married to each other." "Moral misconduct which violates the bona fide occupational qualifications for employees includes, but is not limited to, such behaviors as the following: heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex), homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female, sexual harassment, use or viewing of pornographic material or websites, and sexual abuse or improprieties toward minors as defined by Scripture and federal or state law."

Yet Klein sounded the alarm, and her tweet ignited a firestorm.

Others discovered a parent agreement that gives the school the right to refuse admission to students or kick them out if the student or his or her parents or guardians violate the biblical lifestyle covenant.

This led to a flurry of reports suggesting the school engages in bigotry.

" Karen Pence Is Working At A School That Bans LGBTQ Employees And Kids ," screamed the HuffPost headline. Vice News reported, " Karen Pence is 'excited' to be teaching at a school that doesn’t allow LGBTQ students or teachers ."  The Hill 's version: " School where Karen Pence will teach prohibits LGBT students, faculty ." CNN reported, " Karen Pence teaching art at school that bans gay students, parents ."

BBC: " Vice-president's wife Karen Pence to teach at anti-LGBT school ."

New York Times : " Karen Pence Is Teaching at Christian School That Bars L.G.B.T. Students and Teachers. "

New York Post : " Mike Pence’s wife back teaching at school that bans gay, transgender students ."

People : " VP's Wife Is Teaching at Anti-Gay Christian School, but Spokeswoman Calls Controversy 'Absurd' "

That headline quoted Kara Brooks, a spokeswoman for Karen Pence, who emphasized the second lady's long tenure at the school. "It's absurd that her decision to teach art to children at a Christian school, and the school's religious beliefs, are under attack," Brooks said.

Yet the second lady and the school are both very much under attack.

"Karen Pence is a terrible human being," tweeted Mark Harris, author and journalist at Vulture.

Others discovered a parent agreement that gives the school the right to refuse admission to students or kick them out if the student or his or her parents or guardians violate the biblical lifestyle covenant.

Yet the second lady and the school are both very much under attack.   Karen Pence teaches bigotry and discrimination," Adam Parkhomenko, former national field director for the Democratic National Committee in 2016.

At least two liberal activist groups slammed Karen Pence over her decision to teach.

"Why not teach at a school that welcomes everyone, instead of choosing one that won't serve LGBTQ kids, kids of LGBTQ parents?" JoDee Winterhof, senior vice president for policy and political affairs at the LGBT group Human Rights Campaign (HRC), told HuffPost. "The Pences never seem to miss an opportunity to show their public service only extends to some."

HRC President Chad Griffin argued that Karen Pence's employment means she considers LGBT people second-class citizens.

The ACLU tweeted that Karen Pence's teaching art "sends a terrible message to students. Do we want to live in a country with leaders who are willing to disavow LGBTQ youth?"  Even a congressman, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), weighed in on Karen Pence's employment. "This is just a reminder of the work we still need to do to protect the LGBTQ community (especially students) in this country, and that the leaders of our nation aren’t doing that work, Moulton tweeted.  Not everyone attacked Karen Pence, however. Some noted that LGBT people face torture and death in other parts of the world, while Mike and Karen Pence stand up for equal rights for all people, even without the further "rights" activists demand — many of which amount to denying people's religious freedom to live according to their consciences.

Andrew T. Walker, senior fellow in Christian ethics at the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), blasted the  Washington Post report.

"This article is a great example for why media distrust is a real thing," Walker tweeted. "Media elites thinking there’s a story here while not possessing a basic knowledge of constitutional liberties, or for that matter, remote familiarity with Christian teaching."   Liz Wheeler, a host on One America News Network, tweeted, "Karen Pence teaches at school that defines marriage as one man & one woman! Nancy Pelosi belongs to church that defines marriage as one man & one woman! Guess which woman liberals attack."

Traditional Christian teaching, rooted in the Bible, has affirmed that marriage is between one man and one woman for life, that sex should be reserved for marriage, and that God made human beings male and female — so that a person cannot change their biological sex and should accept the gender identity connected to their biological sex.

As the numerous news articles about Immanuel Christian School admit, private schools are allowed to set moral standards for teachers and students, even if those standards seem bigoted or irrational to others.

The problem is, leaders and groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) have redefined Christian morality as bigotry or "anti-LGBT hate." In reality, Christians believe that homosexual activity and transgender identity are sins. They also believe that people with same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria are no worse sinners than everyone else. Every Christian is a sinner and needs the grace of Jesus Christ to be reconciled to God.

People who struggle with same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria are very welcome among the Christian community, but the sexual standards do not change for these people. Many Christians decide not to act on their same-sex attraction and have rejected transgender identity in the service of Jesus Christ.

Sadly, non-Christians — and even some Christians — seem utterly unable to understand that there is a difference between biblical sexual morality and bigotry. So when someone like Karen Pence teaches at a Christian school, they think she must be a hateful person.

This kind of anti-religious bigotry is growing, especially on the Left. Last month, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) went after Trump judicial nominee Brian C. Buescher for his membership in the Knights of Columbus (KOC) . They attacked KOC's sexual morality on LGBT issues — the same positions KOC, the Catholic Church, and all traditional Christians hold. Traditional Christian sexual morality is being declared anathema by organizations, senators, and an angry pro-sexual revolution mob.

If you or anyone you know is utterly unable to understand Immanuel Christian School's position on sexual morality, seek out a group of evangelical Christians to speak with. Evangelical Christians are not going to disappear, and the kind of vitriol spewed at Karen Pence only divides Americans, convincing Christians that they are becoming a persecuted minority. Mutual understanding is important for both sides.

Have you ever even read the bible?  It does not say these things.  False prophets are frowned upon by Jesus ....

It does, but I don't think it does that to the exclusion of the gay alternative because that wasn't even considered in those times.

should accept the gender identity connected to their biological sex

Again, I don't think dysphoria was a thing even considered by biblical writers. While I don't think modern science has yet figured out the best and most lasting treatment for such folks, as Christians I think we should be compassionate to their struggle and endorse the treatment that seems to bring them the best peace.

That is just the start of Old Testament polygamy,

Answer: The question of polygamy is an interesting one in that most people today view polygamy as immoral while the Bible nowhere explicitly condemns it. The first instance of polygamy/bigamy in the Bible was that of Lamech in Genesis 4:19 : “Lamech married two women.” Several prominent men in the Old Testament were polygamists. Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others all had multiple wives. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubine.

Not to Neglect First Wife
Exo.21:10 "If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish."

Why does GOD tell men to not neglect the first wife if he marries another wife? Why doesn't HE just say "Thou Shalt Not Marry Another Wife."? The bible forbids having sex with animals, and forbids men from having sex with other men, and forbids men and women from dressing like the other gender. Yet it never forbids a man from having more than one wife, and even tells men how to have a successful marriage if he DOES have multiple wives!

Deut. 21:15 If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
16 Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:
17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

The bold faced text is what the left is upset about. Pretty sure they could care less about the rest.

No one is forced to send their kids to this school. It is not a public school. Last I checked we still had freedom of religion. Don't like what the school stands for- don't pay to send your kids there; but don't pretend that anyone has the right to force people not to work there, or send their kids there if they want to.

Exactly.  The secular progressive just wants to have something to whine about and hate.  Most all private Christian schools have that kind of work agreement for their employees.  It’s totally ok for religious organizations to hire only people who agree to support their religious beliefs and role model those to the people around them.  The fuss about the 2nd lady is ridiculous since she worked there before when her husband was in Congress and her daughter graduated from that school.

I'm not sure anyone is saying the school should be outlawed or anything. It's an issue of leadership. Even the wife of the vice-president sets an example. No one is saying she can't work there, just that she shouldn't - and not on legal grounds, but on moral grounds.

What did Karen Pence expect? As wife of the VP she is under scrutiny, just as other VP wives before her, so exactly what did she expect to happen? Seem very naïve of her and Pence to think nothing would be said, that some people would not be upset.  Her teaching at a "christian" school while she and her husband support a man that has proven to be as far from the teachings of Christ/Bible as anyone could be...their hypocrisy is shameful.

I know, those are some values we have been witnessing.  Ripping children from parents,  promoting the lies of others without a qualm,  idolizing a pussygraber and his amoral ways, greed over good,, hate over love,  judgement over acceptance, lies over truth, forcing same said beliefs and values on to everybody else in the name of 'religious freedom', and the hypocrisy is too much.  I don't think you realize who has been paying attention to the actions of these false prophets.  Those values are reprehensible, to be frank.  As far as I'm concerned, anybody who claims to have moral values could never be a Trump supporter, given his character and how he acts on it. If those christians just live the values they claim to have and leave everybody else to do the same, nobody would blink.  The Pences are part of a group that does all of the former, shunning and harshly judging.   No bueno.

Understandable and actually admiral. although myself I Also advocate for some of if not a lot of what president trump does as well, But, I do not and never did believe this man is both either genuine or actually has any of our best interests deep in his heart.

I believe his interests, needs, wants, desires, and motives are all self driven from unethical reasons and his own personal needs.

I think he has wanted this opportunity for a very long time and is Driven by what HE wants out of the job. repeat: What HE wants out of the Job. Not what the nation gets, not you, not I, HIM.

He himself has sad repeatedly that he intends on being  “The Best President America Has Ever Had.”

WHY ? Not for us, not for the nation, for himself, for the power, the fame and the glory.

Ulterior motive is a very important aspect. Many people will be very nice to you to get what they want. In reality they don’t give a fuck about You they are using You to get what They desire. Trump is no exception. Trump is using the nation for his own edification. For his own purpose and to his own advantage.

This man’s ways and means of accomplishment are cold, calculating and uncaring, He has and will hurt anyone he thinks he needs to to get His way. Over and Over. Again and again.

He’s undisciplined, irresponsible, unpredictable, untrustworthy, uncooperative, a vindictive bully, and a control freak. Not what I consider leadership material by a long shot.

This man can and will use anyone or anything he can to advance HIS own agendas at any cost. His winning at any cost always comes with a price to others.

At this time president trumps public agenda is to  “make America great again”. IMO: We always were great. So we start with a false narrative and now understand the ulterior motive that really drives this man.

Donald trump ways and means of accomplishment in short, Suck !  He promises anything to anyone to get whatever he wants. He personally insults anyone who dares oppose him or disagrees with him, he intimidate all he can and uses irrational fears and threats to help move his agendas forward. He seeks to destroy any who dare question, obstruct or diminish anything he wants.

Trump is pretty good at seeing the problems of the world, Big deal most of us are, but trump’s solutions are always grandiose, overblown and therefore unrealistic unless scaled back to reality.

His lack of attention to planning and the details make anything he does ripe for failure and problems . Just look at his instantaneous Zero immigration release policy failure, No detailed planning and it fell apart almost as soon as it was implemented and is still a mess today.

This man has always been “The Boss” he is used to getting his own way, even when his way is unreasonable, irresponsible, or even unworkable.

In contrast most politicians actually start off wanting to help the country in some way , they are driven by a since of making a difference for others. Not fame and glory.

I’m now exhausted…Break time….LOL

KAG, have a nice rest of the evening, steve

"Those who supported Republican candidates in recent elections, such as white born-again or evangelical Christians and white Catholics, strongly supported Donald Trump as well. Groups that traditionally backed Democratic candidates, including religious “nones,” Hispanic Catholics and Jews, were firmly in Hillary Clinton’s corner."

Yes, I get it, white evangelical Christians are often extremely xenophobic and homophobic and voted against freedom and equality for all by electing a gold painted turd because Russia whispered in their ears "You're special, your religion is special, your skin color is special, vote for Trump and he'll make sure you stay special..." and the dumb shits believed it.

The fact remains that a majority of Catholics and a majority of Protestants each overall did in fact vote for Trump.  That was my claim that you questioned and that I proved correct.

That's because the "You're special, your religion is special, your skin color is special, vote for Trump and he'll make sure you stay special..." message didn't appeal to Hispanic Catholics, Jews, Muslims and the religiously unaffiliated. Trump appealed to one demographic and one demographic only and while he didn't win over the majority of Americans, that bitter bigoted white Christian minority squeaked out an electoral college win to grace us with their Turd Emperor and they've done nothing but shit stain Americas reputation around the world since.

I realize it is much easier to lambast these people than to admit how shite a candidate Hillary Clinton was, but this is why you lose elections to people like Donald Trump.

Evangelical white Christians are very well aware of the ridiculous and brainless hate spewed their direction by angry, hyper-emotional liberals.  The well documented scorn Hillary Clinton bears for any woman who wants to stay at home with her children did not help her, either.

Further, most people are not interested in government policy based wholly on the "feelings" of liberals who show no interest in or ability to control their "feelings" and are in a seemingly constant state of tantrum.  Things like OWS, BLM, or pink vagina hats are huge vote losers.

They only lose the votes of losers. I really wouldn't want a piece of shit who doesn't believe in equal pay for women or equal rights for gay or minority Americans to be in my party no matter how much easier having "more" votes would be. I'm not like many Republicans who are okay accepting the racist Nazis and KKK members just to bolster their rolls so they can win elections. I'm not an American who thinks of Russia as a friend or ally and appreciate their illegal and illicit help winning elections. If you reject the American ideal of justice, freedom and equality for all regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith or lack thereof, then fuck off, I don't want anything to do with that kind of sorry sack of worthless.

Keep telling yourself that.  But understand that regular people with jobs, bills to pay and kids to feed view most protesters and almost all "counter-protesters" as unhinged nutjobs.

"Accept"?  Really?  Is there some sort of vetting process for the Democratic Party?  Is there some sort of application?  Background check?  Is it like "are you now or have you ever worn a fur coat" sort of thing?

"Accept"?  Really?  Is there some sort of vetting process for the Democratic Party?  Is there some sort of application?  Background check?"

No background checks, just up front condemnation of racism and bigotry and a party platform that works to eliminate the vestiges of prejudice that continue to cling to some areas of America, especially the rural mid west and south. Democrats immediately denounced the marching Nazi's and KKK members even though they weren't wearing Democrat campaign hats, many were wearing MAGA hats as they chanted "Jews will not replace us!" , as were many in the crowd of white male youth taunting the native American man. Instead of hearing outrage and immediate condemnation from conservative Republicans we hear the Republican President saying “You also had some very fine people on both sides,” and Republican Representatives saying “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” or “The idea of multiculturalism, that every culture is equal — that’s not objectively true" and “Cultural suicide by demographic transformation must end.” “Mixing cultures will not lead to a higher quality of life but a lower one.”

Republicans bend over backwards in an effort not to offend white supremacists, they will denounce them only when forced into a corner and then you get those half-hearted apologies like Steve Kings “Mr. Speaker, I regret the heartburn that has poured forth upon this Congress and this country" "I reject that ideology, I defend American civilization, which is an essential component of western civilization." So not really much of an apology for questioning why white supremacists might be offensive to real Americans.

"Is it like "are you now or have you ever worn a fur coat" sort of thing?"

No. It's a pretty clear question, do you or do you not support the inequality and prejudice championed by white supremacists? No one is asking if you've ever had a racist thought, I doubt anyone on the planet can deny that if they're being honest. But this is about what ideology do you support and push. If it's the one that continues a racist lie about a former President being born in Kenya, then it's likely you're a fucking piece of shit racist. If it's the lie about "white culture" being threatened by a "wave of immigrants", then you're likely a fucking piece of shit racist.

Riiiiiight.

So when they're sleeping in a park for 8 months, who takes care of those kids??  Do they take their kids when they go start a street brawl with Nazi morons over a statue?  Or is day care provided??

They sure don't act like it.

There are over 60 million Trump voters.  Characterizing them as a uniform group is a bit silly.  Some of them act badly.  Most of them do not.

No background checks, just up front condemnation of racism and bigotry and a party platform that works to eliminate the vestiges of prejudice that continue to cling to some areas of America, especially the rural mid west and south.

You post bigotry while claiming to oppose bigotry.  Sadly unsurprising.

Republicans bend over backwards in an effort not to offend white supremacists,

There is little evidence to suggest they care about who gets offended or why.  Nor should they.  People make their own emotional decisions, and they are frequently irrational.

Since this image of the Covington kids, " just having fun with OTHERS ", goes back to 2012 perhaps it's time the School stepped in and had a little pow wow with their student body about better ways to get along with others.

Karen Pence Demonized for Teaching at Christian School

I believe the issue is not that She teaches at a Christian school, more along the lines that it seems to have shall we say homophobic leanings.

I think that Jesus may just side with the demonizers in this case. Not that I knew Him but it is my understanding that He was a kind of all inclusive guy and made no exclusions to the best of my knowledge. But if I am wrong, perhaps one of our Christian friends can drop the scales from my eyes.

But having said that, as Ronin points out should one not agree with their outlook don't send your kids there.

It's the hypocrisy.  They wholeheartedly support Trump - who is amoral and unethical, and the exact opposite of what they believe.  But like most false Christians, they only bother practicing that belief when it's convenient.  Apparently they find their so-called morality too inconvenient when it clashes with Pence's political ambitions.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't know if the anger helps. I think it only serves to cause people to retreat and further entrench themselves into the objected-to ideology. In other words, yelling at people only makes them defensive.

I think activists would get a lot more traction appealing to the better angels, as they say. Inviting people to have an open mind about the meaning of scripture and appealing to their Christian compassion would, I think, go a little further than freaking out and demonizing them. I think it's far better to conceptualize them as mistaken or misguided as opposed to evil.

While I agree that this really is a nothing burger, private schools can do whatever they want as long as they aren't teaching the children that all gay people are evil and should be put to death (even though its often inferred by the reading of some scriptures) so they get to do what they want, those upset by her example have a right to express themselves as well. A private religious school can decide to not allow black students if they wish, they're a private school not open to the general public, just like a golf club near my house that still does not allow black members. They can do that if they wish, there is no law forcing anyone in private to not be a racist, to have diverse friends, no one forced to invite gay couples over for dinner, you're allowed to be as bigoted as you wish in America as long as you don't bring that over into your day job working in a business open to the public or working for a public school.

And I don't give two snot bubbles about Karen Pence working for a private Christian school, that's her choice. And it goes without saying virtually every private Christian school regularly indoctrinates children with religion and religious morality that would never be allowed in public schools, so their stance against LGTBQ teachers and students is no surprise. But the fact is, just as Christians are free to hate and discriminate in their private lives and private schools, everyone else is free to judge them doing so, free to respond with "F* those homophobes". So while whiny religious conservatives with thin skin get all upset at being called out on their bigotry, they're often trying to claim their freedom to discriminate should somehow make them immune from others saying mean things about them in the media. So all those upset by the example Karen Pence is setting are entitled to their opinion, just as those who rally behind her are welcome to theirs.

.....    “This month, Karen Pence resumed teaching artpart-time to elementary students at Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Virginia. But groups like the Human Rights Campaign and the American Civil Liberties Union are knocking the Second Lady because the school holds to a Christian view of sexuality. Its code of conduct requires staff to "live ... personal life(s) of moral purity" – and its employment application lists "homosexual or lesbian sexual activity" as among the criteria that violates the job qualifications spelled out for employees.

Speaking Thursday on "Washington Watch with Tony Perkins," Pence blamed the dustup on the mainstream media.

"The attacks on Christian education by the mainstream media have got to stop," the VP began. "We cherish the freedom of religion in this country. This administration stands four-square for the freedom of religion for people of all faiths – and to see the mainstream media criticize my wife because she's choosing to return to the classroom of an elementary Christian school is wrong. Again, the attacks on Christian education must end."

The American Family Association – in an Action Alert to its supporters – places the blame clearly on what it describes as "sexual-deviancy advocacy groups" that "do not believe any individual having connections to government – like Mrs. Pence – has the right to teach in accordance with their Christian faith."

"The ACLU and HRC should remember that all people are legitimate citizens – not just those that toe the liberal line," says AFA president Tim Wildmon....https://onenewsnow.com/culture/2019/01/18/pence-defends-his-wife-their-faith-from-lgbtq-attack

Very true, if the vice Presidents wife wants to work at a Christian madrassa that indoctrinates them in Christian sharia law and teaches children to discriminate against other law abiding tax paying American citizens, to label people "other" or "less than", that's her choice.

No, it was an attack and sweeping generalization, no matter how you try to justify it. It doesn't have to be directed at a specific individual to still be an attack. Even the mods apparently concurred.
