Interesting article from Psychology today. It appears that dogs are only as racist as their owners are. They pick up on their owner's fears, and if the owner is fearful of a different race, then the dog will be, too.

While I'm sure lots of dogs get aggressive when they sense their owner's fear there's a lot of other reasons dogs seem racist. The number one reason is many black people are afraid of strange dogs and the dog senses their mistrust and it's a self fulfilling thing. Also if a dog isn't socialized with black people they can fear what they see as different and become aggressive, it's not racism though because dogs can react the same way to people with glasses, hats, canes or crutches, umbrellas, or uniforms if they've never been exposed to those things. Lots of dogs don't like Police or Firemen it's the uniform and all the gear. Firemen scare the shit out of dogs with their big jackets, helmet, and boots and they're often carrying gear, I wonder if the dogs even recognize them as human. Dogs tend to live sheltered lives with the majority of their human contact confined to immediate family so it isn't hard for something we think of as completely normal to be completely foreign to your dog.
I had a dog that hated the mailman. I think it's because of the noise he made when put the mail in the mailbox
