Meghan McCain defends being the 'big bad Republican' on TV: 'My mere existence triggers the left'

6bafbad0-94e1-11e6-aa38-0b7f25a107f1_US-   Erin Donnelly, Yahoo Celebrity   6 hours ago

She’s been  mocked by   Saturday Night Live   and  John Oliver grilled by Seth Meyers  and  accused of being “rude and entitled.”  Even so,  Meghan McCain  has no plans to stand down in the face of criticism.

“I think some people feel the pressure, not just here but on TV in general, when they’re Republicans in front of a liberal audience, to not be the big bad Republican,” McCain says in a new  New York Times Magazine  feature about her show,  The View . “And I don’t care. I should care more, but it’s more important to me to be true to myself.”

5ce5336e2100009b0cd0e6ae.jpeg Meghan McCain has opened up about being the "big bad Republican" on   The View . (Photo: Michael Brochstein/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

The piece calls the Republican daughter of the late Sen. John McCain the “most combative questioner” on the ABC daytime talk show, and acknowledges that its audience includes “hate-watchers” ready to pounce on the latest round of bickering.

“McCain presses buttons for a certain kind of liberal who finds her views the apotheosis of white privilege — as does her tendency to lose her composure or name-drop her father,” notes writer Amanda FitzSimons.

But McCain defends her outspoken nature.

“The Trump years make everything more heated and more intense,” McCain tells FitzSimons. “I am not here to do cooking segments.”

Nor is she going to be cowed by any negative headlines. On Tuesday, a defiant McCain shared an article accusing the media of trying to “belittle” her. The 34-year-old tweeted that she “triggers the left” but she “can’t stop, won’t stop.”

Per usual, her comeback to critics has generated more backlash, with commenters accusing her of “playing the victim.”

He made comments that he was considering running. His bloated ego needs for him to stay in the limelight.

Two years before, in 2006, there was much hype surrounding a possible Trump bid for New York governor. That (please contain your surprise) didn't happen. But Trump did mention he could run for office in the future. While he didn't specifically mention the White House this time around, The New York Post reported that Trump was thinking about running as an independent in 2008.

“He’s not a war hero, He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

"The very foul mouthed Sen. John McCain begged for my support during his primary (I gave, he won), then dropped me over locker room remarks!"

after being called out on his multiple deferments allowing him to dodge the draft...

“I had a doctor that gave me a letter — a very strong letter on the heels,”

“I’m being very nice. I’m being very, very nice. But at some point I fight back, and it won’t be pretty,”

after Senator McCain passed:

“I never was a fan of John McCain, and I never will be,”

"Spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier “is unfortunately a very dark stain against John McCain.”

"He had far worse 'stains' than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!"

“So it was indeed (just proven in court papers) ‘last in his class’ (Annapolis) John McCain that sent the Fake Dossier to the FBI"

Only a true Neanderthal with below room temperature IQ, no ethics, morals, pride or standards could be that triggered by a dead man.

“(Trump) spends his weekend obsessing over great men because he knows it and I know it, and all of you know it, he will never be a great man,” - Meghan McCain

She hasn't really been targeted by the left since her fathers passing. It's pretty much been all hate coming from the alt-right and Trump sycophants angry with her father having a backbone, which virtually every other Republican in the Senate and Congress are apparently missing, even when he was fighting cancer. I didn't always agree with her fathers policy, or hers for that matter, but they've never used the caustic hate for others to try and win an argument. Her father would fight hard on policy but remained not only civil but stayed friends even with those across the aisle he was fighting. Something todays worthless Republican representatives have abandoned for a total scorched earth policy even though the ones on the other side are other American citizens.

Not according to the news stories - he was on a trip to China, met her in Hawaii at a party, asked her to marry him, filed for divorce, got married six weeks after the divorce.

Carol was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5 ft 4 in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.

Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. ‘I have no bitterness,’  she says. ‘My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.

My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25 . You know that happens...it just does.’

Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.

LAST NIGHT ON LATE NIGHT

John Oliver: Meghan McCain Is “The Most Embarrassing Child of a Prominent Political Figure”

On Sunday, the comedian tweaked McCain over her tense interview with Seth Meyers—but saved the real trolling for her husband,   The Federalist ’s Ben Domenech.

MAY 20, 2019

trump-mueller-report-john-oliver.jpg

COURTESY OF HBO.

Meghan McCain   and her husband,   The Federalist   publisher   Ben Domenech,   might have a new least-favorite late-night host:   John Oliver.

For those who may have forgotten McCain’s   first   late-night beef: earlier this month, the   View   host appeared on NBC’s   Late Night,   where   Seth Meyers   gently grilled   her about her repeated attempts to link comments from Congresswoman   Ilhan Omar   to mass shootings. Evidently, McCain could not stand even mild heat, eventually asking Meyers, “Are you her publicist?” Domenech was even more incensed. In a series of   apoplectic tweets , he called Meyers a “cuck” and wrote, “I see that @sethmeyers, the untalented piece of shit who only has his job because he regularly gargled Lorne Michaels’ balls, went after my wife tonight with his idiotic anti-Semitic bullshit.” The meltdown quickly went viral; Domenech has since deleted the tweets.

So, where does Oliver fit into all of this? On Sunday night, during his   opening segment   on   Last Week Tonight,   the HBO host took a moment to discuss this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which had concluded earlier that day. One of the teams, Iceland’s Hatari group, is BDSM-themed—and one of its members is the son of the country’s ambassador to the U.K. Oliver quipped, “You may be thinking that’s the most embarrassing child of a prominent political figure you’ve ever seen. But let me remind you of the continued existence of Meghan McCain!”

“Oh no!” Oliver continued, in mock panic. “Oh no! Oh, I bet her husband is going to get so mad at me now! What on Earth is he going to tweet and then delete? I can’t wait to find out!”

So far, Domenech has not tweeted about the joke—but, you know, the day is young. Maybe Domenech will get to it after processing   what just happened   on   Game of Thrones .

If calling her Joyless gets your knickers all twisted, then I suggest you look away at the horror. jrSmiley_80_smiley_image.gif

Can't defend your position, eh?

I didn't say my knickers were twisted but it's obvious you can't defend your own hypocrisy.

But, please, carry on.

What are you babbling on about?

What hypocrisy?  [Member's underwear are not part of the topic]

I'm not wearing knickers so they're not twisted.

You know what I'm talking about, but I am done with this conversation

Knickers are pants to me.  I wouldn't discuss underwear.

And starting stupid shit like this has value?

And yet you don't mock or criticize other women, do you?

You let this stand?  Very disappointed in the moderation.

I guess Meghan is the best the right has

I wouldn't make that assumption. It kind of implies everyone else on The View is the best the left has.

If she wasn't John McCain's daughter her chances of being on television would be slim and none.

There are some who may take your use of the word 'slim' as a personal attack on our dear Meghan.  You know, the 'transparent skinned' righties.

Probably not, but we can say that about a lot of politician's kids...

Chelsea comes to mind -

That initial appearance ended inauspiciously, devolving into a companionable chat between Clinton and "Rock Center" host Brian Williams about her difficult upbringing. Williams: "Tell us how you got from your life as it was, say, yesterday, to a life here with us and doing this." (One would think her life had followed the downward trajectory of the heroine of "Orange Is the New Black.")

Meghan McCain, 'Big Bad Republican?'  Uh, she want to take away the birth control too?

Have you heard her say that?

Or anyone else?

I'm a Republican and I wish EVERYONE would use BC effectively--especially the people who don't want or can't afford kids.

'My Mere Existence Triggers The Left'

It would seem that Dear Megan thinks too highly of herself. IMHO, her mere existence would not really trigger a cricket. It seems she is trying to rate herself on the same scale as her Father, but, she does not have the merits, nor the credibility as her Father had. If she did, she would not bother putting on such a show to try and boost her image.

The current model for so many shows these days is to cast people as being at opposite ends of the political spectrum and send them out on stage to argue over pretty much everything. Several panel shows have their "villain" at the far end of the spectrum.

I don't love this format for TV, but I do give a little credit to the people who are willing to play that villain day and in day out. It has to be frustrating some days and I don't doubt that you get all sorts of feedback from lunatic viewers who sound like they might be dangerous.
