Meghan McCain defends being the 'big bad Republican' on TV: 'My mere existence triggers the left'
She’s been mocked by Saturday Night Live and John Oliver , grilled by Seth Meyers and accused of being “rude and entitled.” Even so, Meghan McCain has no plans to stand down in the face of criticism.
“I think some people feel the pressure, not just here but on TV in general, when they’re Republicans in front of a liberal audience, to not be the big bad Republican,” McCain says in a new New York Times Magazine feature about her show, The View . “And I don’t care. I should care more, but it’s more important to me to be true to myself.”

The piece calls the Republican daughter of the late Sen. John McCain the “most combative questioner” on the ABC daytime talk show, and acknowledges that its audience includes “hate-watchers” ready to pounce on the latest round of bickering.
“McCain presses buttons for a certain kind of liberal who finds her views the apotheosis of white privilege — as does her tendency to lose her composure or name-drop her father,” notes writer Amanda FitzSimons.
But McCain defends her outspoken nature.
“The Trump years make everything more heated and more intense,” McCain tells FitzSimons. “I am not here to do cooking segments.”
Nor is she going to be cowed by any negative headlines. On Tuesday, a defiant McCain shared an article accusing the media of trying to “belittle” her. The 34-year-old tweeted that she “triggers the left” but she “can’t stop, won’t stop.”

Per usual, her comeback to critics has generated more backlash, with commenters accusing her of “playing the victim.”

I realize my mere existence triggers the left. Can't stop, won't stop. Even with a target on my back...
Christian Toto @HollywoodInToto
Meghan McCain fires back against Seth Meyers ... and then this:
Hollywood, Media Collude to Belittle Meghan McCain https://www. hollywoodintoto.com/snl-journalist s-meghan-mccain-view/ … @ bdomenech
I don’t always agree with you and I tend to dig your fashion choices, but really, victim is not a good look. You’re much better than this.

Triggers us? Bitch please!
The only thing that she triggers is Dairy Queen and Pizza Hut.
Target on your back? Bitch please!
boo hoo hoo, she's a victim too.
Like Nelly Olsen all grown up still not understanding why nobody likes her...
She should realize she is only liked by the left when she is bashing Trump. Other than that the left has no more use for her than anyone else that doesn't agree with their ideology.
She should have learned from how her father's running mate was treated by the left. Nasty.
meghan didn't think too much of the teabag trollop either.
The hillbilly from Wasilla. She was just trailer trash from Alaska.
I don't remember Meghan displaying any hatred towards her.
The misogynistic and vicious attacks towards Palin should have taught Meghan something.
How many trashy reality TV shows spun-off from The Wasilla Hillbillies?
Palin and her brood became a national embarrassment all by themselves.
Do you even pay attention to the bullying and attacking done by Palin and Trump both? Sometimes i agree with Meghan and sometimes I don't. She dishes it out and needs to be able to take it when we think she is full of crap. I would not call her a bully who attacks like Palin and Trump though.
True, but that was well after the campaign. Democrats attacked her family including her children through the campaign. It was all very disgusting.
People with an IQ higher than room temperature only laughed at Caribou Barbie. Who would take the TEAparty nut seriously?
Were we supposed to ignore their hypocrisy when she made them an issue of her campaign?
She threw her family front and center, all the while trying to push a false narrative. Trying to push a version of her family that did not exist.
Most people could see right through that.
Of course we were!
Key word is "most"
But there are some who didn't and still don't
True.
Odd really. From the son getting thrown in jail and having a violent temper, drunken brawls, the daughter preaching abstinence while having children with multiple partners out of wedlock, etc.
They just could not tell the truth about anything.
The Palin's were The Shitshow of RW Shitshows until Meghan came along.
Every day You Tube has clips of her being entitled, clueless and insensitive,
That wasn't going to happen. I won't delude myself that it wasn't going on. That religious wackjob wasn't even a decent liar.
I don't remember Trump running in 2008.
Wow.... a lot of triggered folks...are we feeling defensive for some reason?
He made comments that he was considering running. His bloated ego needs for him to stay in the limelight.
Are supposed to ignore yours?
Apparently the whole "respect for a woman's body image" only applies if the woman in question is a card carrying angry liberal.
Am I a card-carrying angry liberal?
Good grief, some of us pay attention to what people are saying over the course of a very long time. Trump isn't exactly an introvert.
I submit the triggered are the ones who jump to the defense of assholes and defend ballsy broads who dish it out regularly but can't take it back.
Don't know.
Got a card?
I only get membership cards from the ACLU.
So your answer is just a simple NO?
Why not just SAY THAT?
“He’s not a war hero, He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
"The very foul mouthed Sen. John McCain begged for my support during his primary (I gave, he won), then dropped me over locker room remarks!"
after being called out on his multiple deferments allowing him to dodge the draft...
“I had a doctor that gave me a letter — a very strong letter on the heels,”
“I’m being very nice. I’m being very, very nice. But at some point I fight back, and it won’t be pretty,”
after Senator McCain passed:
“I never was a fan of John McCain, and I never will be,”
"Spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier “is unfortunately a very dark stain against John McCain.”
"He had far worse 'stains' than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!"
“So it was indeed (just proven in court papers) ‘last in his class’ (Annapolis) John McCain that sent the Fake Dossier to the FBI"
Only a true Neanderthal with below room temperature IQ, no ethics, morals, pride or standards could be that triggered by a dead man.
Why don't you ask Jack, instead of following me around like a lost puppy?
Who said anything about me being triggered 24-7?
No need to flatter yourself.
I asked YOU because YOU were the one I was addressing. You asked a question--remember--and then I asked you a question. Get it now?
Does Jack have some special insight why you answered in the way you did opposed to a simple no?
Is that why you want me to ask him?
removed for context
If you respect veterans you certainly should be bothered.
Still Trump. Just because you're not triggered by Trump being triggered makes about as much difference as a drop of Vaseline to two flies fucking.
Where was that respect from the left when McCain was running for president. The Dems and cohorts painted him as a traitor while he was captured.
Funny, you think the left would be slapping Trump on the back for following their lead; but I guess he is missing that all important D behind his name.
Didn't attack their children. Commented on her daughter who couldn't keep her legs shut and lectured folks about abstinence only.
She does that all the time. Quite whiny. Demanding answers! Complains all the time yet can't stay away from my seeds.
Not true, looks like she has some nice cans, so there is that.
Another possible victim of testosterone poisoning..............
She hasn't really been targeted by the left since her fathers passing. It's pretty much been all hate coming from the alt-right and Trump sycophants angry with her father having a backbone, which virtually every other Republican in the Senate and Congress are apparently missing, even when he was fighting cancer. I didn't always agree with her fathers policy, or hers for that matter, but they've never used the caustic hate for others to try and win an argument. Her father would fight hard on policy but remained not only civil but stayed friends even with those across the aisle he was fighting. Something todays worthless Republican representatives have abandoned for a total scorched earth policy even though the ones on the other side are other American citizens.
'I didn't always agree with her fathers policy, or hers for that matter, but they've never used the caustic hate for others to try and win an argument. Her father would fight hard on policy but remained not only civil but stayed friends even with those across the aisle he was fighting.'
I didn't always agree with Mr. McCain either and I agree with your other points 100%.
Meghan McCain is the Chloe Kardashian of Politics. She earned nothing herself...
My thoughts as well. Her father was an honorable man and she's just riding on his coattails.
Is she having twins?
[delete]
That might be one of the most asinine things I've read today. And a really patronizingly misogynist comment.
Cheated on wife number 1 with wife number 2...Cheated on wife number 2 with wife number 3..
While McCain was in the Hanoi Hilton, Trump was avoiding this personal Vietnam, STD's.
Glass houses and all that, 1st.
He also cheated on wife #3 with a porn star while wife #3 was just post-birth for his Son.
Funny thing about glass houses.......
BTW, McCain was separated from his wife when he met Cindy in 1979.
Don't think Trump was the subject of my comment - ya think?
Not according to the news stories - he was on a trip to China, met her in Hawaii at a party, asked her to marry him, filed for divorce, got married six weeks after the divorce.
Carol was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.
But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.
When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.
Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.
Today, she stands at just 5 ft 4 in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.
For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later.
Carol insists she remains on good terms with her ex-husband, who agreed as part of their divorce settlement to pay her medical costs for life. ‘I have no bitterness,’ she says. ‘My accident is well recorded. I had 23 operations, I am five inches shorter than I used to be and I was in hospital for six months. It was just awful, but it wasn’t the reason for my divorce.
‘ My marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25 . You know that happens...it just does.’
Some of McCain’s acquaintances are less forgiving, however. They portray the politician as a self-centred womaniser who effectively abandoned his crippled wife to ‘play the field’. They accuse him of finally settling on Cindy, a former rodeo beauty queen, for financial reasons.
You're the one that posted the meme, 1st. Opened the gate.
Just pointed out Trump isn't a angel..
Simple enough.
The meme had nothing to do with Trump, so don't believe the gate had been opened - JMHO.
McCain cheated on his wife - numerous times - but we're not talking Trump.
And my opinion is that it has...
Of course if you can't handle it you can flag it for off topic.
It didn't have anything to do with Meghan McCain pulling the 'trigger' either.
This is her history and legacy. All she does is say things then say she was attacked.
Hell several days ago it was all about her and saying on air that Bran was the new king in GOT.
Say something, claim victim, say something else, claim victim again.
Sorry Meghan but you are not the only one in the public sphere that this happens to.
She is a nothing but a pundit and acting like she is the one triggered.
Lots of triggered folks here commenting. Which only proves her point even more ..... driving the truth stake even further through the heart of the triggered.
You preach girl!
Amen.
2nd that
The View is important culturally. I guess Meghan is the best the right has...
The View was a fairly good show until Barbara Walters lost control of it.
Then it became another mouthpiece for the left.
Not surprised when you factor in who controls the networks.
Most of them where former Democrat officials or married to one.
The View was not on my radar for the longest time but my ancient Mom has been a fan for years. I only started watching recently and find Meghan unsufferable. She can only relate to herself. She sounds like an opera singer warming up, "ME ME ME ME ME"...
It wasn't bad, until they let Joyless Behar dominate the dialogue.
Never watch it myself, it has just become ugly.
I never watch the show but it seems like they always tried to have one republican leaning person on. Even with the Survivor contestant woman.
And yet you don't mock or criticize other women, do you?
That's, um, "Hillaryous"...
Awe, you are tying to equate a comment about Behar making fun of her name by calling her joyless to late night host on national TV making jokes about someone raping children and calling Palin a slut, which is viewed by millions.
How cute.
Yes, I'm sure "Abuela" would approve
See JBB's comment directly above yours.
Give it rest.
Can't defend your position, eh?
John Oliver: Meghan McCain Is “The Most Embarrassing Child of a Prominent Political Figure”
On Sunday, the comedian tweaked McCain over her tense interview with Seth Meyers—but saved the real trolling for her husband, The Federalist ’s Ben Domenech.
MAY 20, 2019
COURTESY OF HBO.
Meghan McCain and her husband, The Federalist publisher Ben Domenech, might have a new least-favorite late-night host: John Oliver.
For those who may have forgotten McCain’s first late-night beef: earlier this month, the View host appeared on NBC’s Late Night, where Seth Meyers gently grilled her about her repeated attempts to link comments from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to mass shootings. Evidently, McCain could not stand even mild heat, eventually asking Meyers, “Are you her publicist?” Domenech was even more incensed. In a series of apoplectic tweets , he called Meyers a “cuck” and wrote, “I see that @sethmeyers, the untalented piece of shit who only has his job because he regularly gargled Lorne Michaels’ balls, went after my wife tonight with his idiotic anti-Semitic bullshit.” The meltdown quickly went viral; Domenech has since deleted the tweets.
So, where does Oliver fit into all of this? On Sunday night, during his opening segment on Last Week Tonight, the HBO host took a moment to discuss this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which had concluded earlier that day. One of the teams, Iceland’s Hatari group, is BDSM-themed—and one of its members is the son of the country’s ambassador to the U.K. Oliver quipped, “You may be thinking that’s the most embarrassing child of a prominent political figure you’ve ever seen. But let me remind you of the continued existence of Meghan McCain!”
“Oh no!” Oliver continued, in mock panic. “Oh no! Oh, I bet her husband is going to get so mad at me now! What on Earth is he going to tweet and then delete? I can’t wait to find out!”
So far, Domenech has not tweeted about the joke—but, you know, the day is young. Maybe Domenech will get to it after processing what just happened on Game of Thrones .
If calling her Joyless gets your knickers all twisted, then I suggest you look away at the horror.
[ deleted ]
But, please continue with the nonsense.
I didn't say my knickers were twisted but it's obvious you can't defend your own hypocrisy.
But, please, carry on.
What are you babbling on about?
What hypocrisy? [Member's underwear are not part of the topic]
I'm not wearing knickers so they're not twisted.
You know what I'm talking about, but I am done with this conversation
[deleted]
Knickers are pants to me. I wouldn't discuss underwear.
And starting stupid shit like this has value?
You let this stand? Very disappointed in the moderation.
I wouldn't make that assumption. It kind of implies everyone else on The View is the best the left has.
If she wasn't John McCain's daughter her chances of being on television would be slim and none.
There are some who may take your use of the word 'slim' as a personal attack on our dear Meghan. You know, the 'transparent skinned' righties.
Probably not, but we can say that about a lot of politician's kids...
Chelsea comes to mind -
Meghan McCain, 'Big Bad Republican?' Uh, she want to take away the birth control too?
Have you heard her say that?
Or anyone else?
I'm a Republican and I wish EVERYONE would use BC effectively--especially the people who don't want or can't afford kids.
It would seem that Dear Megan thinks too highly of herself. IMHO, her mere existence would not really trigger a cricket. It seems she is trying to rate herself on the same scale as her Father, but, she does not have the merits, nor the credibility as her Father had. If she did, she would not bother putting on such a show to try and boost her image.
JMOO
The current model for so many shows these days is to cast people as being at opposite ends of the political spectrum and send them out on stage to argue over pretty much everything. Several panel shows have their "villain" at the far end of the spectrum.
I don't love this format for TV, but I do give a little credit to the people who are willing to play that villain day and in day out. It has to be frustrating some days and I don't doubt that you get all sorts of feedback from lunatic viewers who sound like they might be dangerous.
