Distorted videos of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), altered to make her sound as if she’s drunkenly slurring her words, are spreading rapidly across social media, highlighting how political disinformation that clouds public understanding can now spread at the speed of the Web.

The video of Pelosi’s onstage speech Wednesday at a Center for American Progress event, in which she said President Trump’s refusal to cooperate with congressional investigations was tantamount to a “coverup," was subtly edited to make her voice sound garbled and warped. It was then circulated widely across Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.

One version , posted by the conservative Facebook page Politics WatchDog, has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, been shared more than 32,000 times, and garnered 16,000 comments with users calling her “drunk” and “a babbling mess.”

The origin of the altered video remains unclear but its spread across social media comes amid a growing feud between congressional Democrats and Trump. In addition to links from multiple YouTube and Twitter accounts , the video has appeared in the comments sections of message boards and regional news outlets.

Analyses of the video by Washington Post journalists and outside researchers indicate that the video has been slowed to about 75 percent of its original speed. To possibly correct for how that speed change would deepen her tone, the video also appears to have been altered to modify her pitch, to more closely resemble the sound of her natural speech.

The altered video’s spread highlights the subtle way that viral misinformation could shape public understanding in the run-up to the 2020 election. Spreaders of misinformation don’t need sophisticated technology to go viral: Even simple, crude manipulations can be used to undermine an opponent or score political points.

512

Clipping politicians’ speech into videos designed to undermine or embarrass them is nothing new. But the outright altering of sound and visuals signals a concerning new step for falsified news, as presidential campaigns and their supporters battle to boost political messages and influence people online.

“There is no question that the video has been slowed to alter Pelosi’s voice,” said Hany Farid, a computer-science professor and digital-forensics expert at University of California, Berkeley.

“It is striking that such a simple manipulation can be so effective and believable to some,” he added. “While I think that deepfake technology poses a real threat," he said, in reference to more sophisticated computer-altered videos, "this type of low-tech fake shows that there is a larger threat of misinformation campaigns — too many of us are willing to believe the worst in people that we disagree with.”

Owners of the Politics WatchDog page and representatives from Facebook did not respond to requests for comment. Pelosi’s office and Twitter declined to comment.

YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadloo said the Pelosi videos violated company policies and have been removed. They did not appear prominently on the site, he added, and searches for Pelosi-related videos surface content from more authoritative sources.

Pelosi’s voice was distorted in a separate YouTube video , posted earlier this month by a conservative channel with more than 28 million total views. That video slowed a speech Pelosi had given to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association to make her words sound notably slurred. That video appeared to be a version of another video with roughly 200,000 views, in which a man laughed over of a spliced montage of her speech. The original audio shows no such distortion.

Such minor manipulations have become a growing obstacle for covering and understanding Washington. In November, a video of CNN reporter Jim Acosta holding onto a microphone while a White House intern attempted to retrieve it was subtly altered to make the altercation look more dramatic. The edited clip, originally shared by a creator of conspiracy-theory videos, was then shared widely across social media, including by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Pelosi has been the target of similar efforts before. A video last year from The Next News Network, a conservative YouTube channel with more than 1 million subscribers, said Pelosi was “fumbling” her speech because she was drunk or “pretty sick." The channel’s owner did not respond to requests for comment.

A YouTube channel called The American Mirror posted a video saying Pelosi garbled her words and suffered an “awkward 5-second brain freeze” at a speech earlier this month. That channel , which is almost entirely dedicated to videos crafted to criticize or embarrass female Democratic leaders such as Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, has more than 30 million total views.

Kyle Olson, who runs the channel, said he found it "interesting" that "not a single reporter asks any questions when she suffers brain freezes." The videos, he added, "get hundreds of thousands of views because they speak for themselves: there is something not right with her."

Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill said, “We’re not going to comment on this sexist trash.”

Just watch one of Nancy Pelosi's press conferences from just this past week! She constantly stumbles over the simplest words, slurs her speech, and sways like she is drunk without any editing whatsoever! An exaggeration of a behavior is not misleading, it HIGHLIGHTS it. Everyone is condemning Trump for releasing an edited video that highlights what you will see on an EVERY DAY BASIS regarding Nancy Pelosi. The people up in arms about it are the partisan hacks whom cannot stand back and take an honest look at how Pelosi acts on a daily basis.

But completely ignore our responsibility to do the the same with the current occupant?

"She is constantly stumbling over the simplest words and sounds, sways like she is drunk, and slurs most of what she says to the point it is almost pointless for her to speak because she almost cannot make a coherent sound."

I have never heard her sounding or looking drunk. She sounds a lot like most of the 79 year old grandmothers I insure. Does she stutter occasionally when trying to find the right words to express her frustration with a man baby President? Yes, it's happened. But what you refer to as "exaggeration" was just some bold faced lying bullshit and you know it.

The video manipulation was as much exaggeration as me slowing down a picture of you blinking and stopping it half way and saying "Look! He's a stoner!" and then trying to defend it by saying "So what if I 'exaggerated' the video, your eyes look half closed all the time, for a half a second, every time you blink, so you know, I'm not wrong, must be a stoner...".

In my opinion those who adhere to conspiracy theories and praise Trump for "exaggerating" alleged traits of his political opponents should be ashamed. On Newstalkers we are not allowed to say such things.

I think this forum is at a low point.

It is impossible to separate the malfunctions lies and ignorance of the Trump presidency without referring to his most devoted supporters. His supporters are the ones who supply his bizarre ramblings with whatever small amount of credulity they achieve. Without his devoted supporters Trump would have no choice but to stop.

We have here the president of the United States actively and enthusiastically spreading fake news. Any video of Pelosi that edits her statements to make them seem more stumbling or halting , or slow, than they really were is fake news. So we have a president spreading what is KNOWN to be fake news.

This is not defensible. The fact that Trump supporters try and defend it is only one more reason to despise them.

Nope....the PP videos were not faked.

Some on the right have a long history of actions that I believe they defend and justify by believing the "ends justify the means". They fake videos, lie, cheat, break campaign finance laws, whatever it takes to get their chosen ideologue in a position of power. It's frankly disgusting, but there it is, the supposed alt-righteous crawling on their yellow bellies, mouths full of lies and deceit.

" The videos showed how abortion providers made fetal  tissue  available to researchers, although no problems were found with the legality of the process. All of the videos were found to be altered "

" CMP disputed this finding, attributing the alterations to the editing out of "bathroom breaks and waiting periods."

" The analysis' 'concluded that the longer version was also edited , with skips and missing footage"

" workers at offices of the  Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now  (ACORN), a  non-profit organization  that had been involved for nearly 40 years in voter registration, community organizing and advocacy for low- and moderate-income people, were secretly recorded by conservative activists  Hannah Giles  and  James O'Keefe  – and the videos "heavily edited" to create a misleading impression of their activities"

" A photo of a woman protesting Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court has been manipulated to make it look like former Vice President Joe Biden was there and kissed her ."

" A viral meme attempts to undercut the evidence of climate change by using an edited cover of  Time   magazine — and regurgitating a misleading claim about “global cooling.”

Right wing websites falsely attribute quote to AOC “Owning guns is not a right, if it were a right it would be in the constitution,”

There is no evidence that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said “owning guns is not a right,” contrary to what a viral meme claims.

They truly know no shame.

Actually they were. They were heavily edited to distort what was actually said. Example? Speaking of people who know no shame, let's discuss people on the left who continue to claim that the PP videos were deceptively edited:

Says the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals:

The record reflects that OIG had submitted a report from a forensic firm concluding that the video was authentic and not deceptively edited. And the plaintiffs [Planned Parenthood] did not identify any particular omission or addition in the video footage.

They revel in gaslighting.

Says the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals

"Judge Edith H. Jones of the 5th Circuit criticized Sparks for being too “dismissive” of a report by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s Office of Inspector General that served as the basis for booting the organization from Medicaid and revoking $3.4 million in funding."

"Sparks had all but crumpled up that report and thrown it in the trash. He noted that the people who led the report — a lawyer and orthopedic sports-medicine surgeon — had no background in reproductive health care "

" Jones , an appointee of President Ronald Reagan, said Sparks was wrong to make these judgments. She said Texas’s report should have been given "deference” over the outside testimony from Planned Parenthood’s experts — r egardless of Sparks’s opinions of the authors' qualifications ."

" Jones , in particular, has openly criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade . In this ruling, she included a graphic photo of bloody fetal tissue that came from the video footage , apparently for dramatic effect , Chandler said."

"The report concluded Planned Parenthood had diverged from “standards of medical ethics" based on the video footage, which was produced by the Center for Medical Progress, an antiabortion group."

" the “smoking gun” of the original video occurs at the 12:24:00 mark when Nucatola states a price of “$30 to $100,” but it’s unclear exactly what she is talking about . In the unedited version, Nucatola adds a little clarification : “It has to do with space issues, are you sending someone there who is doing everything, or is their staff, what exactly are they going to do, is there shipping involved or are you coming to pick it up.”

So the long and short is, yes the videos were cut and edited, but the 5th court ruled they were not "deceptively edited" to change what was shown. And from what is shown, some religious conservative Judges who already disagree with Roe v Wade decided that the parts of the video showing bloody fetal tissue was enough to claim Planned Parenthood had diverged from “standards of medical ethics" based on the video footage which is what the appeal was all about, getting some foothold in an effort to refuse them the $3.4 million in Medicaid funding for cancer screenings, health check ups and contraceptives for low income families, men and women who rely on Planned Parenthood for their reproductive health needs.

Sad that some religious conservatives think they should have the right to force their religious views and conscience on everyone around them. They think themselves so superior that they have to make laws to keep anyone from offending their conscience because they just can't trust people to be able to make those personal decisions for themselves. "Drunkenness is a sin against God! So if there's a chance someone might get drunk, then we have to ban all alcohol!", that's what the old abolitionists used to claim. "Abortion is a sin against God! So if there's a chance someone might get an abortion we have to ban all abortions!". Just more tired same ol' same ol' haughty busybodies ramming their noses in everyone's else's business making sure no one is offending their imagined God.

The right, nationally [ deleted, ] has nothing to say. No ideas. No suggestions.

Both nationally [ deleted ] the right has only attack - ATTACK - ATTACK .

Since there's not much on the left that is worthy of vitriolic vehemence, they "make stuff up". Their texts are nonsensical red meat, and they use the most un-complimentary photos they can find... and when that isn't ugly enough they alter those images.

So... creating fake videos is to be expected.

Honesty is not important for the right. The previous posts to this seed from our right-wing members are proof. The fake videos are not condemned - they are justified .

In a way, we're fortunate here [ deleted ] to have such a perfect microcosm of the far-right at a national level .

Now if only Fox will air the ACTUAL footage of Trump over the last 2 and a half years where he slurs his words at half of his "rallies" and makes public statements, if they would only air the number of outrageous tweets with poor grammar and his inability to even spell common words, if they would only air the number of times in public he cannot remember the names of people immediately around him or forgets their names like Tim "Apple", or if they would only air the many, many times he has been disoriented getting off the plane not seeing the car or security right in front of him, the times he wanders off, especially the times he has embarrassed our country wandering off the stage, missing cues, and other signs of dementia while representing his office overseas.

Talk about a mess, what a horrible, horrible family to allow their father to deteriorate before the eyes of the world and not once try to step in and get the man some seriously needed help.

He is suffering, he is suffering from the deterioration of language, he is suffering from early dementia paranoia, he is suffering from short term memory loss unable to remember names, sometimes even forgetting faces in the room.

He is unfit for office beyond the horrible policies that hurt Americans, the man is old and suffering, and I cannot even imagine how much his family must hate him to let this go on. They are afraid of being disinherited and care nothing for him at all.

Don't you wonder about a person who would knowingly post FAKE VIDEOS?  Does it cause a tidge of reflection?  If the moron at the top needs to rely on lies and fake videos (and not the first time), one might be wary of believing what he says.  If one cared about the truth.

That is a desperate failed attempt at normalizing Trump's behavior.

Trump's behavior in office is outlying and abhorrent. The examples of that are too prevalent to list and ongoing.

I can't count how many conservative members here have openly admitted that they do not respect Trump as a person and do not support his behavior, though despite that, they do support many of his policies. That position is at least defendable, attempts at normalization aren't.

It has NOTHING to do with my 'side' loosing. It has to do with Trump's behavior being an outlier of every other person who has held the office. I went through the shit with Nixon, Reagan and both Bushs and despite some of the horrible shit they did, Trump TRUMPS them, no contest. Trump is disgusting.

Kind of a double standard if you ask me.

The double standard is coming from the 'Family values, rule of law' right.
