“The Wire” creator David Simon unloaded on President Donald Trump Saturday, after the president called Baltimore a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” while criticizing Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings.

Simon, a former Baltimore Sun reporter, documented life in Baltimore over five seasons of his HBO series. While the critically-acclaimed drama didn’t exactly paint Charm City in a positive light with its brazen drug dealing, out-of-control violence and rampant political corruption, Simon pushed back against Trump by calling him a “race-hating fraud.”

“If this empty-suit, race-hating fraud had to actually visit West Baltimore for five minutes and meet any of the American citizens who endure there, he’d wet himself,” Simon tweeted.

The Emmy-winning writer continued to tweet about the issue throughout the day.

“The president is ‘literally’ a simplistic, racist moron. I am ‘literally’ the guy writing stuff about the last century of U.S. policy, about the drug war and mass incarceration, about Brown v. and white flight, about all of modern U.S. history to which your kind stays mute,” he replied to someone who described Baltimore as a “sh**hole.”

Simon’s former employer, The Baltimore Sun, also condemned Trump’s comments in a blistering op-ed titled, “Better to have a few rats than to be one.”

Baltimore-gate erupted when Trump attacked Rep. Cummings on Twitter.

“Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA,” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

“As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place,” Trump added in a second tweet.

Former first lady Michelle Obama also weighed in on Trump’s Baltimore comments. She didn’t directly address POTUS, but she did post a video on Twitter to shine a spotlight on a positive aspect of the city. The clip shows off Baltimore’s Lethal Ladies — a local STEP team she watched perform in 2017.

In honor of National Dance Day today, Mrs. Obama wrote: “I’m so proud of you all — and everyone who’s dancing today!”

BROWN, BLACK, WHITE

these problems exist in 90plus % of America.

Some areas, tend to have tons more money poured into them if the right people want it that way, and they clean up.

Face it , Trump is the Racist most of US knew he was well before his campaign, definitely during, and still going strong.

The demographics are apparent to those who wish to address the problems with respect to those demographics and the deep-seated issues they are dealing with. It becomes racist when not 'pointing' it out, but simply pointing, with no constructive motivation other than to point. Otherwise, it is only meant to incite...and it is reprehensible when it consistently originates in the Oval Office.

What does demographics have to do with it? I have seen the same things said about San Francisco and Los Angeles, but I have not heard that the observation was racist. Here's a story from just two weeks ago (but before Trump's comments). Strangely, no national hysteria over racism.

Study: LA, California cities 'overrun' by rat infestations

It becomes racist when not 'pointing' it out, but simply pointing, with no constructive motivation other than to point.

That doesn't make it racist. If you want to call it trash talk, divisive, not useful, "meant to incite" as you say, etc., that's fine. But I see no evidence that it's specifically racist.

Agreed. So why is it racist to point it out?

Because if you only point out the places with predominantly non-white communities without including the white "ghettos", then it appears you are making a statement about race and not just about poverty or leadership.

OK, well that hasn't been his history. He has enthusiastically criticized San Francisco on multiple occasions and I don't think most would consider that a predominantly non-white community.

Speaking of failing badly, has anyone seen what is happening to Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco. It is not even recognizeable lately. Something must be done before it is too late. The Dems should stop wasting time on the Witch Hunt Hoax and start focusing on our Country! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 28, 2019

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1155442764940812290

He has also enthusiastically criticized London - a city pretty well known to be very white.

Trump calls London mayor a 'disaster' after a spate of killings

So, if it's your contention that Trump criticizes black cities but not white cities, that is simply wrong.

In fact, he has a long history of criticizing white people and places. So, it's not about race, is it.

You've never heard him criticize Nancy Pelosi? Chuck Schumer? Every last person running for the Democratic nomination? Hillary Clinton? Republicans, too. You don't remember him making fun of or criticizing all the non-colored Republicans running against him? How about all the white people in the media he doesn't like? Have you forgotten about Jim Acosta? Trump is criticizing a white person on an hourly basis - and that's a slow day.

You dont think that evidence of Trumps racist behavior in the past (retweeting white supremacists) has any bearing on the present question? I beg to differ.

Birtherism is racism by the way, and since he was the nations king birther , he is racist from now until (at least)  he renounces his birther activities (as well as his other problematic statements about race) .

Why does Donald Trump talk out of both sides of his mouth all the time? Does he have a brain tumor or something?

No, I don't. I see no reason why I should because no reason has been offered. Simply declaring that A connects to B is not an argument.

Birtherism is racism by the way

This story isn't about birtherism.

he is racist

Even if he is, that doesn't mean everything he says is racist.

Please read this very carefully

Trump’s advisers had concluded after the previous tweets that the overall message sent by such attacks is good for the president among his political base — resonating strongly with the white working-class voters he needs to win reelection in 2020. This has prompted them to find ways to fuse Trump’s nativist rhetoric with a love-it-or-leave-it appeal to patriotism ahead of the 2020 election, while seeking to avoid the overtly racist language the president used in his tweets about the four congresswomen.

https://hagerstownairport.org/2019/07/29/trumps-race-baiting-base-strategy-is-now-evident-and-its-a-big-gamble/

Hmm, Trump's political advisers have concluded that race baiting is GOOD for his re-election hopes.  They have concluded that mocking and disparaging non whites makes his white voting base happy.   Gee, that sounds, er, problematic.

It might be hard to stay in denial for the next sixteen months, but Im sure some like you will try.

I'm sure many of them live in fear. Those who only work there don't have to go to sleep to the sound of gunshots. Rather than denial, let us face the facts. Baltimore needs a lot of fixing. Voting for people on the basis of race hasn't worked. It has only made things worse.

The decay of the inner city has been going on for about 50 years.

Not necessarily decay, but a systemic separation of the haves from the have-nots, going on since our founding... Tammany Hall, Aldermen, the Unions, the Mafia...the powerful preying upon the voiceless in keeping control of power...this is just another incarnation of the same exploitation.

Don't be so hard on yourself. The population of big cities is a tricky thing. There's more to it than just residents within the city limits. The Baltimore Metropolitan Area has almost 3 million people.

More sensible people would probably be wondering why the president of the United States feels the need to insult many of the people he supposedly serves.

It's right here:

“If this empty-suit, race-hating fraud had to actually visit West Baltimore for five minutes and meet any of the American citizens who endure there, he’d wet himself,”

The President is the duck, and the "empty-suit, race hating fraud" are examples of how he looks, swims and quacks. We currently have President Donald Duck, if duck were a euphemism for "complete racist bigot who has no shame".

Of course news reporting must remind everyone that Elijah Cummings is black.  Cummings' racial identity is the only reason Trump's tweets are racist?  So, who's the real racist?

And the resounding rebuttal to Trump's tweets is a dance video posted by Michelle Obama.  How does that not highlight a racial stereotype?  How is Michelle Obama's tweet not racist?

At least Baltimore ain't Alabama.  Alabama is the favorite target of Democrats when pointing out failed leadership.  Naturally Alabama is predominantly white so Democrats can't be charged with racism.  Apparently for predominantly white cities and regions the facts are just facts.  But for predominantly black cities and regions the facts are racist.

Democrats have turned racism into a joke.  Why should anyone pay attention any longer?

My kids went to school in Baltimore. They were there during the riots, so if anyone should have a sour taste about Baltimore it should be me. Like any city, there are good areas and bad. Simon, has never portrayed it differently whether on Homicide: Life on the streets of Baltimore or The Wire. His point is that when people think of Baltimore, they think black, and specifically the bad element there. But in fact, that is not true a true picture of the city or its residents. There are beautiful areas right inside Baltimore that are totally white. And there is huge urban renewal going on in the black and mixed areas. It is not a perfect city but it's not the way that our President has described it either and I can see how people would take it as racist. Crime has to do with economics, not color.

Sorry (but not sorry), if this pisses you - or anyone else - off but I'm going to keep hammering away at this. We can't have conversations about ordinary things anymore because all someone has to do to shut things down is accuse someone else of being racist.
