Songs of Farewell and Goodbye
Songs of Farewell and Goodbye
I'm posting here a list of six that I know quite well, having been a devout "folkie" during the 60s and 70s. Although I have access here to most, I'm having trouble posting links to the songs, but you'll find them on YouTube.
So Long It's Been Good To Know You (Woody Guthrie)
Times Are Getting Hard Boys (Traditional - Lee Hays) (performed by The Limelighters)

Four Strong Winds (Ian Tyson) (performed by Ian and Sylvia)

Early Morning Rain (Gordon LIghtfoot) (sorry for the opening commercial - it's only 30 seconds)

Farewell (Bob Dylan)

Deportee (Woody Guthrie I believe, but performed well by Joan Baez)
Please post "farewell or goodbye" songs that you like or know well, which I expect will be more recent than mine. If you are posting a video, please also post the song name and musician in text.

Sat next to Bob Marley for an hour in a green room once.
He didn't pass and kept his own monster joints to himself.
Many of his songs seemed to be rooted in change (exodus).
Redemption Song has always been one of my favorites.
My son had a big poster of him up in his bedroom.
Hello Goodbye the Beatles.
The day Frank Sinatra died, his daughters put this video up on his official web site.
SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU - Frank Sinatra
I WISH YOU LOVE - Keely Smith
BYE BYE BABY - The Four Seasons
Hello by Lionel Richie
WHEN WILL I SEE YOU AGAIN - The Three Degrees
Back when local tv stations used to have to sign off at a certain hour of the night, a local Boston station would use that song.
Forever by Papa Roach
Call Me by Shinedown
Leonard Cohen - So long, Marianne
Does Harry's two ballads about his and Sue's, "Hello & Goodbys", count?
Harry Chapin - All 14 minutes of Taxi & Sequel
Taxi:
Holy smoke. Although Leonard Cohen is (was) my favourite musician I didn't even think of posting So Long Marianne.
Blood on the Floor - Jeremy Spencer's Fleetwood Mac
Blood on the Floor lyrics;
"So Long, Farewell" - from The Sound of Music
"I Will Remember You" - Sarah McLaughlin
"Good-bye Yellow Brick Road" - Elton John
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" - Peter, Paul, and Mary
Is Leaving on a Jet Plane Gord Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain?
I once shared a taxi ride with Sarah McLaughlin in Vancouver.
They're different songs, and both are excellent, IMO. I'm still a big fan of both PPM and Gordon Lightfoot.
That was certainly a memorable ride! I have several of her CDs.
So long, farewell
I always liked Neil Diamond.
Ray Charles - Hit the road Jack!
I saw Ray live in Dallas TX and this is one of the songs that he did.
Ifin' you don't know by now
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It'll never do some how
When your rooster crows at the break a dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right
The light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
But I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
But don't think twice, it's all right
Like you never done before
And it ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear ya any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' wallkin' way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I am told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
Goodbye is too good a word, babe
So I just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right
It was hard to choose Dylan's Farewell instead of Don't Think Twice when i posted my song choices. Farewell is less known whereas Don't Think Twice was fairly popular.
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on
Like a queen without a throne
I'm an early morning lover
And I must be moving on
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth
Like a slave without a chain
Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true
Will we ever meet again
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain
It's not for me (Goodbye, Jane)
Just give me motion (Will we ever)
To set me free (Meet again?)
In the land and the ocean (Feel no sorrow)
Far away (Feel no shame)
It's the life I've chosen (Come tomorrow)
Every day (Feel no pain)
So goodbye, Mary (Goodbye, Mary)
Goodbye, Jane (Goodbye, Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
Meet again? (Meet again?)
And some you just can't tell
And some they will and some they won't
With some it's just as well
And that'll never bother me
Say the devil is my saviour
But I don't pay no heed
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few
Hope you find your paradise
Tried to see your point of view
Hope your dreams will all come true
Will we ever meet again?
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain
It's not for me (Goodbye, Jane)
Just give me motion (Will we ever)
To set me free (Meet again?)
In the land and the ocean (Feel no sorrow)
Far away (Feel no shame)
It's the life I've chosen (Come tomorrow)
Every day (Feel no pain)
Got to go (Goodbye, Jane)
Hit the road (Will we ever)
I'll say it once again (Meet again?)
Oh, yes, I'm leaving (Feel so sorrow)
Got to go (Feel no shame)
Got to go (Come tomorrow)
I'm sorry, I must dash (Feel no pain)
Goodbye, Jane (Goodbye, Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
Meet again? (Meet again?)
I've got to go
I might very well be the only one here who was into that new wave, electronic, underground alternative stuff from the late 70s to the early 90s, but here's a mood-stroking farewell song that I'll bet no one's ever heard before, from a band that is equally obscure. It's electronic, but sounds Beatles-esque, to me anyway.
Can you please post the title of the song and the musician(s) who performed it?
An Ending by Anything Box. Sorry Buzz, I always forget you can't see YouTube. It wasn't a hit by a well known group or anything.
The End - The Doors:
This is the end, my only friend
The end of our elaborate plans
The end of ev'rything that stands
The end
The end
I'll never look into your eyes again
So limitless and free
Desperately in need of
some strangers hand
In a desperate land
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the king's highway
Weird scenes inside the goldmine
Ride the highway West baby
Ride the snake
To the lake
To the lake
The snake is long
Seven miles
Ride the snake
And his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is calling us
Driver, where you taking us?
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
And then he paid a visit to his brother
And then he walked on down the hall
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
Father?
Yes son
I want to kill you
Mother, I want to...
Come on, baby, take a chance with us
Come on, baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
This is the end, my only friend
The end
But you'll never follow me
Simon and Garfunkel, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.
Chicago - If you Leave Me Now
No baby please don't go
And if you leave me now you'll take away the very heart of me
No baby please don't go, no I just want you to stay
How could we let it slip away?
We've come too far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way?
When tomorrow comes and we both regret
The things we said today
How could we let it slip away?
We've come too far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way?
When tomorrow comes and we both regret
The things we said today
No baby please don't go, no baby please don't go
Oh girl, I just got to have your lovin, yeah
No baby please don't go, don't go, don't go
Let me help you (find the door) by Blackberry Smoke
Good Riddance by Green Day
Goodbye Again by Lucero
I'm Over You by Keith Whitley
one of my all time favorite country/southern rock songs
HEARD IT IN A LOVE SONG - The Marshall Tucker Band
Goodbye for Now by POD
I always thought the old cowboy ballad "Red River Valley" was a romantic farewell, at least the way Marty Robbins did it:
Steam - na na hey hey kiss him goodbye
Eddy Arnold - Make The World Go Away
You Never Really Wanted Me - Charlie Rich
Carly Simon Haven't Got Time For The Pain 1974

Oh, come on, Perrie. This is the last sentence in the original article: "If you are posting a video, please also post the song name and musician in text."
Now your ship is returning
'cause the war came to an end,
I will wait at the harbor
but I don't have hands to wave.
Maybe we waited too long,
maybe we didn't care.
If we're heroes or martyrs
or something in between.
I can't remember your face,
I can't remember your face,
you got my back and so you left.
Now you tell me about glory,
now that I lost my faith,
you will sink to the bottom of my weak memory.
I can't remember your face,
I can't remember your face,
you got my back and so you left
There's still fountains down there
Look on down from the bridge
It's still raining, up here
Everybody seems so far away from me
Everybody just wants to be free
Look away from the sky
It's no different when you're leaving home
I'm just gone, just gone
How could I say goodbye
How could I say goodbye
And close my eyes real tight
There's a light in your eyes
And you know, yeah, you know
Look on down from the bridge
I'm still waiting for you
I thought this would be harder for me. Then I actually had a couple.
I'm stayin' here with some friends and they've got lots of room
You can sell your paintings on the sidewalk
By a café where I hope to be workin' soon
Please come to Boston
She said "No - would you come home to me?"
"Boston ain't your kinda town"
"There ain't no gold and there ain't nobody like me"
"I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee"
Found another one. Sorry Buzz, I didn't think I would know this many. Haha
Hey Ender, I posted 6 and could have posted 20 - whatever you post is very welcome, my friend.
Edith Piaf - No Regrets ( English Version )
Phoebe Snow - No Regrets (Anniversary Video) HD
George Michael - The Long And Winding Road
Three Degrees - When Will I See You Again (1974)
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Stuart A. Staples - Old Friends
I was so into songs last night, and can't resist this song for this seed. The Kinks covered just about every subject. This is Death of a Clown by Dave Davies of the Kinks.
Another that popped into my head. Harry Nilsson (Son of Schmilsson album) Your're Breaking My Heart.
You're tearing it apart so fuck you
You won't boogaloo
Run down to Tramps, have a dance or two, ooohhh
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart but fuck you
You're tearing it apart, boo-hoo
You're breakin' my glasses too
You won't drive my car, might be a star
I've had enough of you
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame so fuck you
There's nothing left to say
There's nothing …
