Bill Gates Concerns Over Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)

Isaac Asimov wrote, " I Robot" over 60 years ago, a cautionary tale of how artificial intelligence could dominate its human creators. Since then it has been the theme of many novels and movies foretelling the dangers of AI, from Hal in 2001, Blade Runner, the Matrix, A.I. to the upcoming Chappie. But for most, these futuristic tales were nothing more than flights of fancy. This week Bill Gates expressed his fear of AI.

During an "ask me anything" question and answer session on Reddit, Mr Gates wrote: "I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well.

"A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don't understand why some people are not concerned."

It's hard to ignore warnings from the man who has revolutionized computers and how we use them. He is joining an ever increasing number of scientist, concerned about AI. Stephen Hawking recently expressed his concern that our science might be outpacing our species. He explains it well:

"The primitive forms of artificial intelligence we already have, have proved very useful. But I think that the further development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. Once humans develop artificial intelligence it would take off on its own and would redesign itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, could not compete and would be superseded."

So if you are sitting in the movie theater feeling a bit bad forChappie wanting to live... give it a bit of thought....

I would have never guess that he had a concern about American Indians.

Oh, that kind of AI, Artifical Intelligence...He better check the right wing repubs, most of their intelligence is artificial.

3 of the most technically advanced science geeks agree that there is a potential for danger from AI : Stephen Hawking , Elon Musk and now Bill Gates . That SHOULD give most people pause on this topic . When it is developed how will we know that it is here ? I'll reveal that if anyone asks ...

There are many SF stories depicting what could be the result of robots with AI, from beneficial to humanity to the destruction of humanity - lots to pick from.

I think that we need to think of the ethical consequences of development of AI. There is a real danger in developing AI, since we can program intelligence, but not ethics. At some point, machines decisions will be on nothing but logic, and logically, we are inferior beings.

The term cyborg is often applied to an organism that has restored function or enhanced abilities due to the integration of some artificial component or technology that relies on some sort of feedback . [3] [4]

Cyborgs in themselves is not a danger. We are heading that way withartificial limbs. I think when we talk about AI, it is not to replace the human brain, but to create amechanicalbeing that can make their own decisions without our direction.

Buzz,

I would say that using stories vs scientist on impact on the subject, I am going with the scientists.

That goes without saying.... could be even scientists... so not necessarily idiots.
