  • A strong majority of Americans (58%) in a new poll disapproved of President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with 68% saying they're embarrassed by the US response.
  • Ninety-three percent of Democrats and 33% of Republicans said they're more embarrassed than proud by the way the US had responded to the coronavirus outbreak.
  • The US has the most reported coronavirus cases and fatalities in the world.
  • There have been nearly 5.5 million reported coronavirus cases in the US and more than 171,000 confirmed deaths.

Almost seven in 10 Americans in a new CNN poll said the US response to the coronavirus pandemic made them feel embarrassed.

Sixty-eight percent said that, compared with 28% who said they were proud.

Democrats overwhelmingly said they were more embarrassed than proud (93% embarrassed, 5% proud), while 61% of Republicans said they were proud. The poll found that 33% of Republicans said they were embarrassed by the US response.

The US has the most reported coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly downplayed the threat of the virus despite the mounting death toll. He's taken an anti-scientific approach, repeatedly contradicting the nation's top public-health experts. The president at one point even dangerously suggested that researchers should look into injecting disinfectant as a cure, prompting companies that produce such products to forcefully warn consumers against doing so.

More recently, when confronted with the staggering six-figure death toll from coronavirus in the US, Trump said: "They are dying. That's true. And you — it is what it is."

Public-health experts have said the Trump administration's handling of the pandemic has been "abysmal" and has mirrored that of authoritarian governments.

As of Wednesday, there had been nearly 5.5 million reported coronavirus cases in the US and more than 171,000 confirmed deaths.

A solid majority of Americans (58%) in the CNN poll disapproved of Trump's handling of the pandemic. Fifty-five percent also said they thought the worst of the pandemic was yet to come.

I guarantee that this isn't the first time Americans have been embarrassed to be Americans since Trump took office.

I'd be surprised if most were not embarrassed by many actions of previous Presidents.  It all depends on the ideology, not the POTUS.

If you listen to the MAGA, Americans should never be embarrassed. Doesnt matter if you have the dumbest shit to ever lead a first world country, be proud. lol.  Unless your leader is a brilliant 'socialist', then be embarrassed.

I don't think some of them are intelligent enough to know when to be embarrassed. It's like some just embrace stupidity.

America's response is about what you'd expect for a virus that has no cure. New York and New Jersey with almost a third of the entire country's deaths, were hit early and among the hardest hit areas in the world.

Some countries have done better, some have done worse. Some countries (Russia, Iran and China) have lied about the disease.

We've managed our economy better than most, probably not limited cases as well as a few have.

That of course isn't what the media will tell you, intent on scaring people as they are. Once New York was blasted with the virus in February and seeded the country, the course was pretty much set.

Wait one darn minute.  How can Trump be called an authoritarian because he refuses to impose stringent restrictions demanded by unaccountable experts?  Seems to me the real authoritarians are upset because they can't force Trump to do what they want.

The biggest problem with the response has been disinformation about how other regions around the world have responded.  Don't ignore the fact that the EU government hasn't been imposing requirements on Europe.  Individual countries within the EU have established their own requirements and response.  That's no different than states within the United States establishing their own requirements and response; which is how the US has been responding.

France, Germany, Spain, or Italy responding to the pandemic isn't any different than California, Arizona, Florida, or New York responding to the pandemic.  European countries also have the luxury of closing their borders which US states cannot do.  So, the gripe is really highlighting that a confederation of independent governments have been better able to respond to the pandemic.

The United States has taken the slacker approach for responding, too.  Instead of distributing masks, soaps, sanitizers, and other needed supplies to control spread of the virus, the United States chose the idiotic supply-side approach of mandating people buy those necessary supplies.  The country is being run by greedy, self-centered lunatics.

It is embarrassing that the 15-minutes-of-fame crowd are trying to shove the United States into a European mold.  There are too many differences between the United States and Europe to allow that to succeed.  What works in Europe won't work in the United States.

Dr. Forrest Gump is upset that he can't force Trump to go down that path to failure.
