President Trump gets pressed on the peaceful transfer of power by the media

White House deputy press secretary Brian Morgenstern provides insight on 'FOX News @ Night.'

"Real Time" host Bill Maher blasted the mainstream media for dismissing his years-long warnings about President Trump possibly refusing to leave office if defeated in November.

Trump caused shockwaves in the media this week after declining to commit to a peaceful transition of power, suggesting mail-in ballots could delegitimize the election results. Amid a public outcry by both Democrats and some Republicans, the White House later stated he would uphold a peaceful transition of power after a "free and fair election."

During his panel discussion on Maher's show, the host began by singling out The New York Times for burying Trump's remarks on "page 15" of the newspaper.

"This is not the paper that I grew up with," Maher said. "I would put that on the front page. That's just crazy me. They wrote, 'The once-unthinkable notion that the president might refuse to accept the results of an election.' Well, it wasn't unthinkable to everybody!"

"I'm going to shut up about it, but it does f---ing stick in my craw that nobody listened to me and that I got no help from The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN -- mainstream media should have amplified ... I got no help amplifying the point I was making," he told the panel.

Maher, who has long predicted that Trump won't leave the White House if he loses in November, then played a montage of himself offering such warnings on his show -- dating to April 2018.

"I get it that, you know, these mainstream media people don't like me ... people who walk outside the boundaries like I do. We don't just, you know, take it, bend the knee, and parrot the one true opinion," Maher continued. "We're bad people, so they don't cover this show. But on this one, you could've given me a little help."

The HBO star then credited Trump for being the one person who "amplified" his warnings, playing another montage of the president mocking the "Real Time" host's apocalyptic prediction at his rallies.

Maher then asked his panel what they think will happen. CNN political analyst Bakari Sellars predicted delayed election results with either an "election week" or "election month" to follow. Podcast host Coleman Hughes said if Trump's defeated he "will leave" but will "complain and won't concede" -- with 30 percent of the country agreeing with him, a prediction Maher called "optimistic."

Both Maher and Hughes agreed that regardless of who wins, there will likely be "trouble in the streets."

Maher has been right about Trump pretty much all along.

Well...if by some miracle Biden should win the coveted prize, it could only happen (in my opinion), if there is cheating and fraud occurring. Trump has every right not to concede until every last vote is counted and verified...which might take days or even weeks.

When Trump wins reelection, as expected, it's very likely the Dems will vigorously contest it and file scores of lawsuits...it's gonna get ugly.

Trump has never hit 50% approval. Almost by definition one would then expect him to lose in the next election. His disapproval rate has never been less than 50%, but you think it would be shocking if he lost, and would require cheating.  Do you know how ludicrous that sounds Greg?

Does it sound as ludicrous as worrying about something someone dreamt up?

As ludicrous as being convinced Trump will lose, citing every poll showing him losing, and still pushing nonsense?

Republican vote totals around the country (in general elections) have been down since 2017. Even in red states Trump supporting candidates are getting less votes than they or Trump did in 2016. The trend is entirely towards him being less popular than he was 4 years ago, and he barely squeaked in then.

And thats before we even look at polls, which have always been a disaster ever since he took office. The only president in history to never hit 50% approval during his first term, and no , Rassmussen doesnt count when weighed against all the others.

jrSmiley_90_smiley_image.gif    Yes, 8-ball, Trump's 2016 win went against virtually every poll.   The polls are imperfect.

JR is offering his analysis based on available information.   Repeating the platitude ' still trust the polls ?' offers no insight as to why you think Trump will be reelected.   Do you have anything of substance to offer other than you simply believe Trump will win?

Not ludicrous at all. No way Biden can bamboozle over 165,000,000 people with the terrible reputation the Democrat Party has. Trump easily wins reelection.

for the same reasons he got elected in 2016

just off the top of my head and in no special order...

  • federal and supreme courts
  • cancel all globalist bs
  • economy / jobs
  • trade deals
  • border security

on all fronts, trump has done more in his first 3yrs than joe did in 47 yrs

having seen trump set 50yr records on the economy / jobs, I do not believe the people will vote to go back to the politics and economy of the last 47yrs - the political dinosaurs are done.

so, besides the polls, tell me why you think biden will win?

why you think biden will win?

I would not try to predict who will win.   Tuesday's debates are an important milestone.   But even after that, so much of an election depends on turnout.   If the right groups turn out in the right districts, that can translate into a surprise electoral win (case in point 2016).   I do not see the Biden base as being particularly energized.   Not a lot of enthusiasm for Biden, but strong motivation to deny Trump reelection.   Trump has enthusiastic supporters but I suspect fewer than in 2016.   The other factor is the unknown impact COVID-19 precautions have on voting.   Who will be dissuaded and not vote?   Which candidate is hurt most by this?   Hard to say, but I suspect this will hurt Biden more than Trump.

Anyway, way too early to start making predictions based on facts.   Funny though, how you presume I think Biden will win.

The main reason Biden has a chance is because he is presidential and Trump is an embarrassment.   On top of that, Trump's handling of COVID-19 hurt him.   Not only by curtailing the economy more than was necessary, but because people can see that Trump was only thinking of his reelection.   Stopping air travel was the proper move, but then the talking down of the virus (presumably to mitigate the psychological impact on the economy) was transparent and irresponsible.

So prior to COVID-19, Trump had the economy, a content electorate and incumbency as his key assets.   Now the economy asset is nullified (net 0 advantage).   The electorate is discontent (a net negative for Trump).   But he still has the advantage of incumbancy.

Net, I suspect a lot of people who voted for Trump in 2016 because he was candid and (they thought) truthful have realized that to be a horribly wrong assessment.   Those who will stick with him will, I suspect, do so because —in spite of the fact that he is a serial liar and the very epitome of an asshole and thus a worldwide embarrassment to the nation since we elected this character as PotUS— he has for the most part acted per the desires of the R party (voters).

t will be interesting how many ballots they find in trunks of cars ,closets and other places in democrat strongholds probably as many as Biden needs to win with a few more thrown in for measures.

In the 2000 election a Florida Democrat poll worker calmed she "found" a ballot box in the trunk of car that she "Forgot" about a week after the election. Out of the 10,617 ballots 9,841 were for Gore with just 776 for Bush. Yeah right, election fraud at it's finest.

The electorate has varied priorities.   Not everyone views the election as you do.   Who will win is not clear.

Last night, about two minutes after the debate, one of the commentators for ABC was very definitive.  He said the American people will look at this and decide they don't want to go through four more years of this.

Trump had to make the American people feel good about him and make them want him to come into their living rooms through the news and social media every day.  And he has utterly failed to do so.

This is closer to a Biden blowout than it is to Trump squeaking by.

I have stated that this is more complex than the current metrics suggest and that Trump could still win even though the metrics are squarely in Biden's favor.   Biden is ahead in the polls (more than Clinton was in October, 2016), is seen to have done better in the first debate than Trump yet I am not declaring Biden will necessarily win.   In short, it is not over yet because there remain ways for Trump to win (with turnout being a monster factor here).

You (maybe you do not understand what I wrote) laugh off the idea that Trump could win and instead claim that he will win.  Based on what, your 'feelings', a 'vision'?

Seems to me that you have no argument, no facts, just  wishful thinking induced declaration.

You merely mentioned issues important to you.    That is fine, but the topic was the likelihood of Trump being reelected.

The question is the position of the electorate (not just you) on the issues of each candidate, the candidate himself, etc. and their likelihood to show up and vote.

On top of this we have the events that could take place this month that could shape the remaining undecided and the election itself.

A list of key issues you personally like about Trump is not an argument as to why Trump will win.    (Unless you think you will be the only person voting.)

Yeah, this is more complex than your personal likes.

If Trump loses the election, he ceases to be PotUS on Jan 20, 2021.    If he refuses to vacate the premises he will be escorted out by the Secret Service.

It does not matter what Trump wants.   This is a non issue.

Yawn. I am so over panicking because of what Trump will allegedly do in the future. We have been hearing about it since before he was elected. It's all meant to inspire irrational fear that they hope will drive people to vote, or failing that, start some kind of riot.

Taking him at his word that he made these "warnings" (as opposed to simply shooting his mouth off) I wonder what Maher thought CNN and the New York Times were supposed to be doing with those warnings? Were his remarks supposed to inspire some CNN assassin? Some NYT Special Forces team to extract him? And isn't it a little early to be fretting over it, anyway?
