  • The former first lady Michelle Obama issued a direct call Monday for President Donald Trump to concede the 2020 election and allow for a peaceful transfer of power.
  • In an Instagram post, Obama opened up about her personal struggles with welcoming the Trumps to the White House on Inauguration Day in 2017.
  • "Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that put my family in danger," she wrote in the post. "But I knew that, for the sake of the country, I had to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside."
  • "I knew in my heart it was the right thing to do — because our democracy is so much bigger than anybody's ego," she added.

In a lengthy caption to an Instagram post on Monday, the former first lady Michelle Obama tore into President Donald Trump for refusing to concede the election.

Obama called for a peaceful transfer of power, recalling how she and her husband welcomed the Trumps to the White House on Inauguration Day in 2017, despite Trump insisting for years that her husband was not born in the US and therefore an illegitimate leader.

A post shared by Michelle Obama (@michelleobama)

"Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that put my family in danger," she wrote. "But I knew that, for the sake of the country, I had to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside."

She added: "I knew in my heart it was the right thing to do — because our democracy is so much bigger than anybody's ego."

The former first lady called out Trump and his allies for impeding a smooth transfer of power, with President-elect Joe Biden's team still unable to fully access things like classified information and federal office space as it prepares for Biden taking office on January 20.

"This isn't a game," Obama wrote. "So I want to urge all Americans, especially our nation's leaders, regardless of party, to honor the electoral process and do your part to encourage a smooth transition of power, just as sitting presidents have done throughout our history."

The post marked a much more critical assessment of Trump than Obama had offered before, with her convention speech over the summer marking her most fervent criticism of him to that point.

For most of Trump's term, she largely refrained from weighing in on the politics of the day.

Similar to her uniquely tailored convention speech, Obama made her critiques in support of the preservation of democracy, rather than just attacking Trump personally.

"Our love of country requires us to respect the results of an election even when we don't like them or wish it had gone differently — the presidency doesn't belong to any one individual or any one party," she wrote in the Instagram post. "To pretend that it does, to play along with these groundless conspiracy theories — whether personal or for political gain — is to put our country's health and security in danger."

Good for her.  She and her husband should have spoke out a long time ago though.

I remain unable to understand how any bridges remain in the first place.    Just goes to show that partisan politics can easily overpower the ability to think critically (and, in some cases, the ability to use common sense).

The Obamas were never his friends, his ally, or even a civil rival. There are no bridges here for him to burn.

I would like to see proof of her claim- something tells me she is "amalgamating" like her husband.

there is nothing racist about it. Insulting? Yes, racist no.

You're having to guess because no one here or anywhere else that I know of has dehumanized anyone you mention to an "it". Even when one rightly calls Melania a gold digging whore, that's not dehumanizing her to an "it". Only the lowest most racist pond scum would do such a thing.

Does it make you feel manly to call the First lady a gold-digging whore?

Kind of senseless to criticize others for exactly what you are doing also.

I regularly hear conservatives on this site call our new Vice President elect a whore without ever having to prove anything.

If a 60 year old known philanderer on his third marriage who already had four kids with two different wives didn't claim to have billions there is simply NO WAY IN HELL a 36 year old European nude model would marry such a greasy pig who was 24 years older than her.

If anyone believes she married him out of mutual attraction or love they're more delusional than Donald Trump claiming he won the 2020 election and should likely go get their head checked.

I doubt it TiG. Today Trump tweeted out twice that he had won the election and his followers believe any lie that he mouths. I suspect this colossal display of stupidity will continue until January 20th, 2021.

I'm wondering if Trump will show up for the inauguration on the 20th.

He will have locked himself in the oval office.   I wonder if there will actually be a forced escort of Trump off the premises.    Given the absurd level of immature defiance to a USA election, I wonder if this old joke about him not leaving might have more truth to it than we might have thought.

Likely not. He will be golfing that day, at Mar-A-Lago. He will be too coward to show up to his transfer of power, as he refuses to give up that power, and will hold on to it until 2024. He is not smart nor man enough to realize that the more he makes a fool of himself now will come into play in 2024 and could very likely cost him his chance of winning then.

However, the chance of him being in prison at that time may pour water over that dream.

He will have locked himself in the oval office.

He may very well do just that. He is totally mentally delusional at this point that most anything is possible.

However, no matter what Trump does, or doesn't do, I have a feeling that Melinia and Barron will be there to recognize the transfer of the Presidency. Then she and Barron will be off to NT and Trump can do what he pleases. She will have become the wife of the man in American history who went against election protocol, as well as civil courtesy. And she and Barron will be embarrassed. But, I do think at this point, Melania will take her pre-nup and leave Trump on or shortly after January 20, 2021. At least, if she has any class or common decency. And even if she don't, she can at least do it for the benefit of her Son.

So it will be interesting to see what happens there.

P.S.... wouldn't it be wild if they locked the Oval office so that Trump could not have access to it on January 20th, or even midnight of the 19th. I wonder what kind of tantrum he would throw then. He might even have the door broken down so he can get in. But, then, there would be no way for him to lock himself in.

Knowing Trump and his sick mind, he would want to do some real damage to the Oval office so that Biden could not sit there right away. The closer it gets to January the sicker and more mentally deranged Trump will become.

If only. It is time he paid for his crimes committed most of his life. And no pardon should be made on his behalf. That would be like rewarding him not only for all his crimes, but, for the hundreds of thousands of lives his refusal to do what was vitally necessary to protect the American people from one of the most rapid spreading and highly toxic pandemics not seen in the world over in many, many years.

That alone is justification for withholding any pardon.
