So I am a big fan of Chuck Lorre's vanity cards. I have been reading them for years and many of them are very insightful and I thought that they could be used as a springboard for interesting discussion. So this is the first one I will try and see where it takes us.
Given that sarcasm is the language of my home, this vanity card hit home. It is alive and well in the Halpern house and has been passed on to the next generation. What are your thoughts about the card and sarcasm in general?
I never see them. I would say because I very seldom watch primetime network shows and when on reruns it goes by so fast you hardly know they are there.
They do go by very quickly, but that is on purpose. Matt and I always pause and read them. Many of them are very funny but also very insightful. So I'll see how this one goes and see if we can get a good discussion on sarcasm or the death thereof.
I've always seen these but never was quick enough to read more than the first sentence. without sarcasm, I probably wouldn't bother to converse. thanks!
The purpose George Carlin's humor was to be outside of the comfortable range of daily conversation. If somebody wasn't scandalized I doubt that he would have felt he was doing his job.
Everyone in the world gets their feelings hurt.I think it was Alec Baldwin that quit twitter because of a joke he posted and a bunch of people threw a fit.
This is why I couldn't ever go along with being PC. I did a whole article about it years ago called "When is a joke, not a joke". We all know when something is mean-spirited. Sarcasm is just being witty in a snarky kind of way.
Sorry, my exposure to Southpark was limited as was my access to TV between 1990 and present, with occasional glimpses into what the pop TV-culture was up to....
But a quick search yields this, which is definitely scatological...
Sarcasm is definitely alive and well in my house. My children have also taken to it quite well. We had a proud moment when my daughter was about 10 years old... my son asked her if what she was putting on her taco was taco sauce and with a straight face she said, "Nope, it's a jar of pickles." My husband and I were so proud. Now, both of them are fluent sarcasm speakers.

I do agree with him on that. In this day and age, say the supposed wrong thing and all hell breaks loose.

I wonder if George Carlin could make it in today's world.
Is this on TV or some other medium of popular culture of which I am also unaware?
Irony must be making a comeback. Zombies!

I will go back farther. I wonder what Lenny Bruce would make of it. He paved the way for Carlin, Kinneson, Pryor, and so many others.

Good question.
Dave Chapell seems to be able to pull it off to a degree.
Very true Paula, but remember Lenny had issues even in his own time. He was way to blue for his lifetime.

Can't argue with that!
/s
I bet you had that one in your head for a long time!
True dat.
It is true! I just tried to think of a sarcastic comment to post and there was nothing there!
What? Are you kidding me? I could have sworn you were a Jack Benny in the making.
I blame advancing age. I used to blame too many drugs too early in life, but that got old....
Scatological humor.....
That is just plain nasty. The only scat I like was done by the great lates Fitzgerald and Torme.
What? Right Church wrong peeeeewww ?
I am just trying to keep scatology alive and well.
Ew, was that necessary?
Shit yeah!
I am guessing that you have a Mr. Hangy doll (Southpark)

Poo you prefer...
YAY! I'm normal in one way at least!

Good for you Ms. A! I had a funny feeling it was. I love how you put it:
I can tell the exact episode that graduated me from sarcasm to a full blown smart ass.
Good for all of you. I always fuck up sarcasm and end up really pissing people off. So I try not to use sarcasm, I'm bad at it.
lol
I think I just hit too close ta home.. OUCH !
I am totally good at it.
Long live sarcasm!
