JERUSALEM—Gaza militants launched rockets toward Jerusalem as thousands of young Jewish nationalists were marching through the contested city, according to Israel's military, sharply escalating tensions following days of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police.
Israel's military said seven rockets were fired from Gaza toward Jerusalem and the nearby city of Beit Shemesh, including one that was intercepted. Sirens were also heard near the border and in the city of Ashkelon.
The Israelis were marching on a new route that avoided Damascus Gate and the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered police to redirect them. The Israeli police said the decision was aimed at de-escalating tensions following a violent morning of clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians around the Al Aqsa Mosque.
Hamas had warned of further escalation Monday if Israel didn't withdraw its security forces from the Al Aqsa complex and Sheikh Jarrah by 6 p.m. local time.
The marchers, carrying Israeli flags, were headed toward the Western Wall for celebrations and speeches marking Jerusalem Day, an Israeli holiday commemorating Israel's capture of East Jerusalem in 1967.
Blaring sirens and loud booms disrupted the festive mood. Marchers continued on their route toward the Western Wall several minutes after the sirens stopped.
On Monday morning, more than 300 people were injured as the police fired flash grenades, tear gas and sponge-tipped bullets at Palestinian worshipers at the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, according to Palestinian medics and social-media videos. Israeli police said they used riot-control methods after hundreds of Palestinians began throwing stones and shooting fireworks at them near an entrance to the site. According to Hebrew media, 20 Israeli police officers were also injured.
The compound, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and Jews as the Temple Mount, has become a focal point of Palestinian anger over what they see as years of efforts to push them out of Jerusalem and limit their access to land they claim, as well as infringe on their basic rights. The situation has been aggravated by right-wing Jewish Israeli efforts to assert control in East Jerusalem, which Israel claims as part of its undivided capital.
In another move that could inflame tensions, Israel’s Parliament is expected to hold a vote Monday afternoon on legislation that would legalize unauthorized settlements in the West Bank, a measure pushed by Mr. Netanyahu’s Likud party as his rivals try to form a government.
Ofir Gendleman, a spokesman for Mr. Netanyahu, said Monday’s clashes were planned ahead of time.
“Extremist Palestinians planned well in advance to carry out riots today on the #TempleMount. What we see now is the result of that,” he said on Twitter . “We guarantee the freedom to pray, not the freedom to riot and attack innocent people. The police [are] working to restore calm.”
U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan called Israel’s national security adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat on Sunday to express Washington’s “serious concern” about clashes at the Al Aqsa mosque during the last days of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
According to a U.S. readout of the call, senior American officials have pressed Israeli and Palestinian officials in recent days to take steps to ensure calm, de-escalate tensions and denounce violence.
Mr. Sullivan specifically urged Israel “to pursue appropriate measures to ensure calm during Jerusalem Day commemorations.”
Israel considers all of Jerusalem its sovereign territory and governs all of its inhabitants, but Palestinians want the eastern portion of the city to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Both Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and Fatah in the West Bank have called on Palestinians to step up confrontations with Israeli authorities and push back against Israeli activity in Jerusalem.
In Israel, some officials and analysts see the recent violence as an inflection point in what they describe as a passive approach to dealing with the Palestinians.
Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, said the escalating tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem stem from Israel’s failure to decide what its goals are with regards to the Palestinians.
“This failure to decide is effectively a decision in its own right, one that is leading us to a reality in which there is one state that is neither democratic nor Jewish,” Mr. Yadlin said in an opinion piece that appeared on Channel 12’s website on Monday.

It was an ANNUAL march to celebrate Jerusalem Day. As the article said it was redirected by the Israeli government to stay away from areas that would provoke the Arabs in order to keep the calm - it was the Arabs who planned and carried out the attacks.

Claiming or even inferring that Kerry was somehow partially responsible for the rockets being fired at Jerusalem by Hamas when they have already said exactly why they were firing the rockets and demanding the removal of Israeli security forces from the Al Aqsa complex and Sheikh Jarrah is beyond dishonest, it's frankly disgusting because it's an obvious attempt by bitter piece of shit conservative partisans to smear Democrats even though the vast majority of Jewish Americans are Democrats and nearly all Jewish American elected representatives are Democrat. The only one stabbing anyone in the back are the bitter conservative Republicans desperate to blame anything and everything negative that happens in the world on their opponents because it will distract and deflect from their own Republican parties implosion.

It was Obama who stabbed Israel in the back during his lame duck period when he no longer needed nor wanted Jewish donations or votes, by abstaining and not voting against a Security Council resolution that was unfairly critical of Israel - the first time that has been done for many years.
And his understudy picked up where he left off by reinstating aid to the Palestinians.
Maybe he did it to make Tlaib and Omar feel more included, but unfortunately he has probably just delayed any possibility of an end to the conflict.

The Arabs/Muslims/Palestinians who live in Israel have poliitical parties (the Joint List) with members in Israel's government, serve as judges - even a supreme court judge, serve in the Israeli armed forces, are doctors, nurses and administrators in Israeli hospitals (I know that for a fact because I met them and talked to them), carry on their businesses, pray in their mosques, and in a poll almost all of them indicated that they would rather live in Israel than in any Arab or Muslim country. As well, what Vic wrote about them not accepting everything they asked for, turning it down when it was offered to them indicates that they are not really interested in being a proper state, but want to keep the hope alive to kill all the Jews and then possess, what their chant is, "Palestine shall be free, from the river to the sea" - i.e. ALL of Israel. .

The Palestinians, rioting over a legal case being brought against Palestinian tenants who refused to obey an eviction order caused by their not paying rent. The Palestinians and Gazans escalated it from a molehill into a mountain.
Funny how they try and hide how they obviously feel.
Here is a history lesson for anyone who supports the Palestinians:
Camp David, 2000. At a US sponsored summit, Prime Minister Ehud Barak offers Yasser Arafat a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza, which included the division of Jerusalem. To the shock of everyone, Arafat refused it and had no counter offer.
Taba, 2001. The Clinton Parameters are offered and Arafat again refused it.
Israel, 2008. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered 100% of the West Bank, Palestinian statehood, the division of Jerusalem with the Muslim parts becoming the capitol of the new Palestine. Again this incredibly generous offer was refused.
What does this tell us? That the Palestinians/their leaders only want exactly what they once told us - the destruction of Israel!
That's today's history lesson. Hopefully John Kerry read it.

As I've said elsewhere previously, Biden's decision to fund Palestinian causes with $235 million frees Abbas and his team to fund the terrorists and their families with more money as awards for killing Jews, and to sweeten their personal bank accounts. I may be critical of Trump for a lot of reasons, but I have always lauded his policies towards Israel.
However, I do NOT agree with the eviction of Palestinians from their long-time East Jerusalem homes in order to make room for more Israeli settlers as in fact that Is a form of ethnic cleansing, and perhaps the root cause of the problems we are seeing there today.

I take back what I said before about ethnic cleansing as I was not aware of the actual legal history of the properties. SUMMARY
The case of Sheikh Jarrah is a complex and long-running legal matter, subject to competing
property claims over a small area of land in Jerusalem, by the Jewish owners and Palestinian
tenants, that also incorporates the area’s religious significance and spans a history dating back to
pre-1948 British mandate era. The case has been subject to legal proceedings since 1972, and is
currently before Israel’s Supreme Court, where a final decision is expected in the next 30 days.
This particular case has garnered unprecedented attention in the wake of the recent Human
Rights Watch (HRW) report accusing Israel of engaging in ‘apartheid’ practices, the International
Criminal Court (ICC) investigation and a concerted campaign by the pro-Palestinian, BDS and NGO
network, as well as the Palestinian leadership, to exacerbate and inflame the currently tense
situation in and around Jerusalem.
WHERE IS SHEIKH JARRAH?
Sheikh Jarrah is a predominantly, though not exclusively, small Arab neighborhood of Jerusalem,
that is about 2 – 3 kilometers from the Old City.
WHAT IS THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AREA?
Jews refer to the area as ‘Shimon Hatzadik’, in which the tomb of ‘Simeon the Just’, a revered 3rd
century BCE Jewish High Priest, is buried. The neighborhood is often visited by Jewish pilgrims.
Palestinians claim the area derives its name from Sheikh Jarrah, a physician to Saladin, an Islamic
military leader, who reportedly fought the Crusaders in the 12th century. His body is believed to be
buried there.
WHAT IS THE CLAIM AGAINST ISRAEL?
The pro-Palestinian community is claiming that Israel is unjustly evicting four Palestinian families
from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and that this exemplifies accusations against
Israel in the context of the broader conflict with the Palestinians.
In response, the owners of the property (a private Israeli NGO, Nahalat Shimon), claim they have
the legal title to the property in question and that, in the absence of rent being paid by the
tenants, the tenants ought to be evicted, for breaching the law.
WHAT IS THE CHRONOLOGY?
Sheikh Jarrah is an Arab neighborhood that developed outside the walls of the Old City of
Jerusalem in the 19th century.
According to Israel’s Supreme Court, the land in question was purchased by the local Ashkenazi
and Sephardi communities from their Arab owners in 1875, primarily because of the area’s
religious significance, in housing the tomb of ‘Simeon the Just’. The property was registered in the
Ottoman land registry as a trust under the name of Rabbis Avraham Ashkenazi and Meir Auerbach.
A small Jewish community lived there peacefully in co-existence with the local Arab community
until 1948, when the War of Independence broke out.
The Jewish owners had tried to register ownership of the property with the authorities of the
British Mandate in 1946.
When the War of Independence broke out in 1948, the Old City of Jerusalem and its surrounding
area – including Sheikh Jarrah – was captured by Transjordan (now Jordan) and the Jewish families
were forcibly evicted. Custodianship of the property was transferred to the Jordanian Custodian of
Enemy Properties. In 1956, the Jordanian government leased the property to 28 families of
Palestinian ‘refugees’, while maintaining ownership of the property.
After the Six Day War in 1967, when Israel regained control of Jerusalem, it passed a law1 allowing
Jews whose families were evicted by Jordanian or British authorities in the city prior to 1967, to
reclaim their property, provided they could demonstrate proof of ownership and the existing
residents were unable to provide such proof of purchase or legal transfer of title.
In 1973, ownership of the property was registered by Sephardic Community Committee and the
Knesset Israel Committee with Israeli authorities pursuant to the above law.
Subsequently, in 2003, the owners sold the property to ‘Nahalat Shimon’, an Israeli NGO that
seeks to reclaim property for Jews evicted or forced to flee, as a result of the 1948 War of
Independence.
BEGINNING OF LEGAL PROCEEDINGS
In 1982, the Jewish owners (Sephardic Community Committee and the Knesset Israel Committee)
sued the Palestinian families residing in Sheikh Jarrah and demanded their eviction on the basis
that they were squatters on the property. The Magistrate Court determined that the Palestinian
families could not demonstrate their ownership of the property, but that they enjoyed Protected
Tenant Status. As protected tenants, they would be able to continue living on the property as long
as they paid rent and maintained the property2
. This arrangement was agreed upon mutually inagreement signed by the parties, in which the tenants recognized the trusts' ownership inexchange for protected tenant status.3

Beginning in 1993, the trusts began proceedings against the residents based on their non-payment
of rent and of illegal changes to the property.
In 1997, Suliman Darwish Hijazi, a Palestinian man, attempted to challenge the trusts' ownership
of the property, based on a Kushan (Ottoman title) that he allegedly purchased by a Jordanian
man, al-Bandeq, in 1961.4 The Court ruled that Hijazi failed to demonstrate that the kushan refers
to the claimed property in Shimon HaTzadik and that forensic evidence raised the likelihood that
the Kushan had been altered or forged. Furthermore, Hijazi failed to prove that al-Bandeq had
ever owned the property and was therefore not in his right to sell it. Finally, Hijazi had never acted
to protect his property rights, both during the Jordanian and Israeli periods, by registering it,
charging rent, or paying property tax.
PRIOR COURT RULINGS
5 Key points:
The residents are protected tenants and must pay rent to the property's owners.
The residents never paid rent and carried out illegal construction on the property. The
court previously ordered the residents to pay the outstanding rent and to immediately
evacuate the illegally constructed additions.
The court rejected claims that the Jordanian government has committed to transferring
ownership to the residents and that this commitment never came to fruition due to the
outbreak of the Six Day War. The only document as evidence was a copy of an unsigned
standard Jordanian Department of Housing form, that did not contain any agreement of
the transfer of rights.
The court rejected claims that a resident purchased ownership rights from a man named
Ismail. The claimant could not demonstrate that Ismail had been the property's owner, that
he had purchased the property from him or that the claimant had ever been a protected
tenant at the time of the alleged sale.
Current state of legal proceedings
Following the judgement of the Jerusalem District Court in February 2021, upholding an earlier
court decision that, in the absence of payment of rent, the Palestinian residents must vacate the
premises, the tenants appealed to the Supreme Court, with the courts final verdict expected
within the next 30 days.

The firing of missiles is being escalated by the Gazans, firing on Tel Aviv and other areas in central Israel, killing Israelis, but of course to watch the news videos and accounts Israel is the bad guy. The biggest problem that the Palestinians/Gazans seem to have is their lack of knowledge of the meaning of the words "consequences" and "retaliation". and what causes them to happen.
