FBI even searched Melania's wardrobe in Trump raid
FBI agents scoured Melania Trump's wardrobe when they raided the former First Family's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida Monday.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

FBI agents scoured Melania Trump's wardrobe and spent several hours combing through Donald Trump's private office, breaking open his safe and rifling through drawers when they raided the former First Family's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida Monday morning.

The Post has learned that the search warrant used by the FBI to enter the palatial Palm Beach property focused solely on presidential records and evidence of classified information being stored there.

A source close to the former president expressed concern that FBI agents or DOJ lawyers conducting the search could have "planted stuff" because they would not allow Trump's attorneys inside the 128-room building to observe the operation, which lasted more than nine hours.

The raid by over 30 plain clothes agents from the Southern District of Florida and the FBI's Washington Field Office extended through the Trump family's entire 3,000-square-foot private quarters, as well as to a separate office and safe, and a locked basement storage room in which 15 cardboard boxes of material from the White House were stored.

Feds arrived at 9 a.m. and didn't leave until 6:30 p.m.

An eyewitness to the raid said all of the boxes were confiscated by federal agents Monday, but it is unknown if anything else was taken as no itemized list of items was provided by the FBI.

The boxes contain documents and mementos from Trump's presidency, reportedly including letters from Barack Obama and Kim Jong Un, and other correspondence with world leaders.

A legal source said that the boxes had been packed up by the General Services Administration and shipped to Mar-a-Lago when Trump left office in January 2020.

Trump's attorneys, led by Evan Corcoran, had been cooperating fully with federal authorities on the return of the documents to the National Archives and Records Administration, according to sources.

In May, Corcoran granted access into Mar-a-Lago's windowless storage room to FBI agents who spent several hours searching through the boxes. Trump stopped by the basement to say hello at one point, says someone who was there.

The Trump family since has decamped for the summer to his golf estate in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Mar-a-Lago is closed for the season and only a skeleton staff, including groundskeepers, were present during Monday's raid.

Access to the 20-acre private country club is believed to have been granted by heavily armed US Secret Service (USSS) agents stationed at the front gates and toting M4 carbines. Lawyers for the former president, who were caught off guard by the raid, arrived an hour later.

The FBI would not have executed a warrant without notifying the Secret Service first, according to a retired high ranking USSS agent.

"USSS legal counsel probably would've directed [them] to see copy of warrant and then step back."

Once inside the air-conditioned, white marble-clad private quarters, agents fanned out to search every room, while shocked staff were instructed by Trump's lawyers to unlock doors and provide the FBI access to every room, including the sumptuous Versailles Master Bedroom, renovated by Melania two years ago.

Another group of agents, including a professional safe cracker, moved to a separate part of the enormous 1924 Spanish stucco building to search Trump's office and safe.

The demeanor of the three DOJ lawyers who accompanied the FBI was described by one eyewitness as "arrogant," and they repeatedly told Trump representatives: "We have full access to everything. We can go everywhere."

Despite the sweltering 91 degrees temperature Monday, Trump's lawyers were forbidden by the feds to shelter inside the cool lobby, or to observe the search in any way, but were left outside in the baking sun near a parking lot.

The feds instructed Trump's representatives to switch off the security cameras but they refused.

Trump has ripped the raid of Mar-a-Lago as a political ploy.

Why would they seal the reason for the raid?

Judge Bruce Reinhardt is the judge who approved the warrant.  The big question is why?

A person with knowledge of the matter said the warrant was approved by a federal magistrate judge, Bruce Reinhart, a former federal prosecutor and defense lawyer. Magistrate judges are selected by district court judges, meaning that they are not political appointees. It is common for magistrates to review search warrant applications.

The warrant was obtained by prosecutors with the Justice Department’s national security division, which at the request of the National Archives has been leading the investigation into whether the materials were improperly removed and stored, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

The FBI left behind a detailed manifest of all the materials that were removed, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Why bother?  He ignored subpoenas throughout his Administration and advised others to ignore

lawful subpoenas over and over again.

All colorful language aside, the search was conducted with Trump's attorney's coordination and the FBI rarely discusses ongoing investigations or publishes subpoenas.

I am not a young man anymore, and have been alive, as we all have, to see some of the most momentous events of recent centuries.  With all that, nothing I've seen in my life compares to the sad spectacle of millions of Americans bowing down in subservience to a criminal con man, Donald Trump.

A congressional committee has essentially proven that he broke numerous laws as he tried to overturn the last election and illegally keep himself in power, and still, just a couple weeks later, we have conservatives beside themselves with anguish and fury because the mean old Justice Department of the United States is trying to bring this notorious criminal to justice.

Therein lies the key question that the hard core leftist libs here on NT cannot and/or will not answer. They totally refuse to accept that to have committed a criminal act, a person must be tried and convicted in a court of law. They can be accused of one, but are still considered innocent until proven guilty and convicted. Just saying somebody is a criminal or that they committed a criminal act alone does not make them a criminal in the eyes of the law. That' why it is called innocent until proven guilty.

If you murder someone and you never get caught you have still committed a crime. Murder is criminal whether it is adjudicated in court or not.

It is absurd to argue that unless you are convicted you are not a criminal.

They totally refuse to accept that to have committed a criminal act, a person must be tried and convicted in a court of law.

I don't accept that, either.  That's not what I'm saying.  People get away with criminal acts all the time. You probably saw a dozen the last time you were in the car for more than an hour.  Driving 90 mph is a criminal act whether you get pulled over or not.

That's not the point.

The point is that they say idiotic shit like 'the committee basically proved he's committed several crimes'...and then they can't name any of those crimes.

They run around squealing with excitement at every stupid little scrap of news like they're a bunch of teenage girls who just heard Harry Stiles is next door.  Then, they have a teenage girl tantrum when you point out that arguing with the Secret Service detail or waiting 3 hours to see if the rioters disperse are not actually crimes.

That' why it is called innocent until proven guilty.

I'm not a Trump fan.  I've disliked the man since the 1980s.  I do believe he has almost certainly done something illegal, but it's almost certainly not something we've seen publicly.

That said, you are 100% correct.  He is innocent until proven guilty, just like everybody else.

I'm wondering if there isn't some sort of misunderstanding about the whole "smoking gun" idea.

Let's face it, as a group, liberal-leaning people are not always very knowledgeable about guns.

Is it possible they're thinking a "smoking gun" is one that someone has set on fire?   Or maybe they're thinking it's a gun one wears while smoking, kinda like a smoking jacket.

Just trying to help identify the disconnect. ;)

According to the article above:

Despite the sweltering 91 degrees temperature Monday, Trump's lawyers were forbidden by the feds to shelter inside the cool lobby, or to observe the search in any way, but were left outside in the baking sun near a parking lot.

Yes. It was unprecedented.

...and unnecessary abuse of power witch hunt.

Neither you nor I know what they were looking for. Trump has a copy of the warrant and could release that information if he thinks it was so unnecessary.

Did the FBI miss something in May?

This is what we know. A grand jury was opened in May in connection to a probe on misappropriated classified documents. Some involving national security. Documents weren't returned until criminal action was threatened. Investigators reported in June they found more classified documents being stored improperly there. Yesterday the FBI executed a warrant that was signed off on at every level of the FBI and DoJ and brought before a judge.

IF the FBI & DoJ have mishandled this case then they should be held accountable - all the way up that chain of command that signed off on the raid.

IF Trump OR people around Trump have mishandled national security documents (or worse) then they should likewise be held accountable.

Until we get credible reports of the what, where, when and how you are pissing in the wind. I'll wait to pass judgment and then pass them on the appropriate people.

The probable cause for the warrant is sealed.  Trump does not have a copy of the probable cause and at this point has no idea why the warrant was issued.  So it is up to the state to disclose the probable cause. A warrant will not disclose the reason for the raid just the permission and scope.

This is starting to smell like a set up.

A legal source said that the boxes had been packed up by the General Services Administration and shipped to Mar-a-Lago when Trump left office in January 2020.

So the GSA was good with this, since they were the one's who approved as to what got packed up.  So then why this:

In May, Corcoran granted access into Mar-a-Lago's windowless storage room to FBI agents who spent several hours searching through the boxes. Trump stopped by the basement to say hello at one point, says someone who was there.

The FBI already went through these boxes.  I'm thinking the GSA packed away another "insurance policy" and there wasn't enough time for the FBI to find it in May so they decided to be sure of finding it this time, they just take it all and search to their hearts content.

The FBI will find something, so the question is how did it get there?  Trump didn't do the packing the GSA did.  The FBI is so sure that there is something in these documents that they had to conduct a raid to get them all, I don't believe that they just have a hunch, they were told by someone that it is there, perhaps someone in the GSA.

FBI Search of Trump's Home Pushes Long Conflict Into Public View

Maggie Haberman
Wed, August 10, 2022 at 8:02 AM

The search carried out Monday by the FBI at former President Donald Trump’s Florida home, a law enforcement action with explosive legal and political implications, was the culmination of a lengthy conflict between a president proud of his disdain for rules and officials charged with protecting the nation’s records and secrets.

On one side were officials from the National Archives, which is responsible for making sure all presidential records are preserved according to the law, and the Justice Department, which some people familiar with the inquiry said had grown concerned about the whereabouts of possible classified information and whether Trump’s team was being fully forthcoming.

On the other was Trump, who, in apparent contravention of the Presidential Records Act, had taken a trove of material, including sensitive documents, with him to his home at Mar-a-Lago when he left the White House — and then, in the Justice Department’s view, had failed to fully comply with requests that he return the disputed material.

After the investigation bubbled along largely out of public view for months, word that agents had arrived early Monday at the gates of Mar-a-Lago with a search warrant raised new questions about Trump’s vulnerability to prosecution and fueled further partisan division.

Trump’s aides and allies intensified their criticism of the search Tuesday, calling it unnecessary and asserting, without citing any evidence, that it was a brazen use of prosecutorial power for political purposes. On his social media site Tuesday, Trump cast the search as part of “a coordinated attack” that also includes local and state prosecutors, alluding to investigations into him being carried out in Georgia and New York.

Christina Bobb, a lawyer and aide to Trump who said she received a copy of the search warrant, told one interviewer that the agents were looking for “presidential records or any possibly classified material.”

At the White House, President Joe Biden’s press secretary said he had no advance word of the decision to carry out the search, and at the Justice Department, Attorney General Merrick Garland maintained public silence about the momentous step.

Despite Trump’s suggestions that an army of agents raided Mar-a-Lago and stormed through his home, the FBI conducted the search on a day when Trump was out of town and the club was closed. The agents carried out the search in a relatively low-key manner, people with knowledge of the matter said; by some accounts, they were not seen donning the conspicuous navy-blue jackets with the agency’s initials emblazoned on the back that are commonly worn when executing search warrants.

Another person familiar with the search said agents began going through a basement storage unit, where items lsuch as beach chairs and umbrellas are kept. They progressed to his office, which was built for him on the second floor of the main house, where they cracked a hotel-style safe that was said by two people briefed on the search to contain nothing of consequence to the agents.

Then they moved to Trump’s residence, the person said.

Ultimately, they removed a number of boxes of documents, people familiar with the search said.

It is not clear what the agents were looking for or what they took. Nor is it clear whether the search was carried out simply to ensure that the documents and other material were properly turned over to the archives or whether it was a possible precursor to a prosecution of Trump for mishandling classified material or obstructing efforts to get it back.

Throughout his presidency, Trump was disdainful of record-preservation laws and was known to tear up documents and in some cases to flush them down toilets. It is not clear whether he sought to hold on to material sought by the archives and the Justice Department to keep it away from public scrutiny or for some other reason.

A close look at the investigation, though, shows how it has been quietly picking up steam for much of this year, introducing a new element into the questions about Trump’s varied and intensifying legal problems and his political viability even as he hints at another run for the presidency.

For many months before he left office, Trump would tell aides to bring documents to the residence for him while he was in the Oval Office, and they complied. But there was no process in place, meaning that officials whose job it was to keep track of paperwork did not always know exactly what had been taken there, according to people familiar with the events.

By the end of his presidency, and as Trump was fighting to overturn his election loss, some of his aides were concerned with preserving the work of the office itself. His habit of transporting material around in cardboard boxes, with either a personal aide or a valet carrying them, was well known, but the contents were not always clear.

Discussions were held within the White House by top staff members about how to get Trump to surrender his boxes, people familiar with the events said; it is unclear whether Trump was ever asked directly or officials simply did not discuss the issue with him.

When he left the White House, Trump took the boxes with him to Mar-a-Lago, packed with paperwork including letters from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the former president’s “Sharpie-gate” map of the path of a hurricane, along with personal items such as golf balls and a rain coat and various other things stuffed in them.

The National Archives, whose mission is to preserve government documents, determined last year that many important presidential documents that archivists knew existed were missing and believed to be in Trump’s possession.

That set off a lengthy back and forth between the National Archives and Trump’s lawyers about what documents he might have taken. Trump’s unwillingness to quickly hand over the documents frustrated archives officials, who had grown deeply skeptical throughout the Trump administration that he and his aides followed federal record keeping laws.

For the rest of 2021, Trump resisted requests to give back the material. In the meantime, Trump would wave things like the North Korean leader’s letters at people, as if they were collectors’ items he was showing off.

In January, an official for the National Archives flew to Florida and retrieved 15 boxes of documents, gifts and other government property.

When archivists went through the boxes, they found several documents containing sensitive national security information, including some marked classified.

The archivists also discovered that Trump had not returned several documents that they believed the former president had in his possession. Around this time, the National Archives alerted the Justice Department that it was concerned about the handling of the classified documents, which are closely tracked by the government and are supposed to remain within secure channels.

By this spring, the Justice Department had taken a range of steps that showed it was conducting an investigation into what happened with the classified documents, as prosecutors issued a subpoena to the National Archives to obtain the boxes and convened a grand jury, whose term was later extended past its initial expiration date.

Investigators began contacting possible witnesses, including Molly Michael, an assistant to Trump, signaling that they were seeking information from people close to the former president. A lawyer for Michael declined to comment.

During the spring, a group of federal investigators, including the Justice Department’s top counterintelligence official, Jay Bratt, traveled to Mar-a-Lago. Trump met with them briefly, and lawyers for Trump were present.

In an interview Tuesday with the right-wing channel Real America’s Voice, Bobb said she and other Trump lawyers had been “extremely cooperative” with the FBI during a previous visit when agents were given “free access” to the building.

After Bratt and other officials visited Mar-a-Lago, they subpoenaed the Trump Organization for a copy of Mar-a-Lago’s surveillance tapes, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The company complied, turning over the tapes to the government.

Trump’s lawyers also sifted through his records at Mar-a-Lago to determine whether he still was holding onto anything classified or sensitive. In the course of that process, Trump’s team made statements to the Justice Department about what Trump had returned.

But in recent weeks, officials came to question whether that information was entirely accurate — and whether Trump continued to store sensitive documents at Mar-a-Lago, one of the people said. It is unclear whether the Justice Department conveyed that concern to Trump’s team.

Trump and his aides have made clear that they were taken by surprise when the agents showed up at Mar-a-Lago with a search warrant Monday.

New photos suggest how Trump, flush with power, may have sent official documents down the toilet

There’s new evidence that, if confirmed, shows how former President Donald Trump flushed public documents down the toilet. Spencer Platt/Getty Images

Into the sewer.

That appears to be the intended destination of what look like torn-up presidential documents in   photographs released   by reporter Maggie Haberman to the news publication Axios, which published them on Aug. 8, 2022.

Haberman has a book coming out on former President Donald Trump   in early October. One photo, allegedly of a White House toilet, shows a scrap of paper with   what Haberman says is Trump’s handwriting on it , sitting at the bottom of the toilet bowl. The other photo, of a different toilet allegedly used on an overseas trip, has several scraps of paper similarly situated, with the name of a Republican congresswoman written on one piece.

This could be the first visual documentation of Trump’s already-reported habit of flushing documents down a White House toilet . In response, Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich told Axios, “You have to be pretty desperate to sell books if pictures of paper in a toilet bowl is part of your promotional plan.”

But even without having to unclog plumbing in search of missing papers, national archivists have their work cut out trying to plug potential gaps in the 45th president’s historical record.
