British Prime Minister Liz Truss quits after her policies triggered economic turmoil and obliterated her authority.
"I recognise though that given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party," Truss announced in a statement outside 10 Downing Street. "I have therefore spoken to His Majesty The King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party."
Truss noted that a leadership election to decide the next prime minister will be held within the week.
"This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our countries economic stability and national security. I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen," she said.
Truss, who was appointed by the late Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 6 just days before the monarch's death, will become the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
Liz we hardly knew ye
This won't take long did it. Wow
It's one thing when the opposition has disdain for a leader, it's far more serious when one's own party has little confidence.
You beat me to it. I posted the npr story right after you posted yours, but deleted mine when I saw your seed. I guess this was the wrong time for "trickle-down" economics - her conservative mandate caused the whole financial world to freak out. .The inflation in the UK is over 10%, and it's even worse in Europe. She sure wasn't another "Iron Lady".
In parts of Europe they are protesting over it.
I guess, here in the US we take inflation with a grain of salt.
You take it with a grain of salt and use it as your biggest midterm election weapon.
Without a doubt it is always the main election issue
It's the single biggest issue here with the voters. Gas has temporarily leveled out, but groceries just keep going up.
The dems are oblivious to it. They keep talking about abortion and Jan 6th.
Greg, you are invited to my Nov 8th election night party.
I think we have a mutual friend somewhere.
“They keep talking about abortion and Jan 6th.”
While some continue to ignore ‘abortion and Jan 6th’…just two of the issues that are easier to ignore than address.
Obviously Jan. 6 not even on the radar........
Those things are nowhere close to the concerns of most voters. They may be important to the left, but that's why the left is in for a good beating on Nov 8th.
“Those things are nowhere close to the concerns of most voters.”
You may think a woman’s right to choose is not a concern of most voters but in stating that you have disenfranchised and discounted and diminished over 50% of the electorate.
The economy, inflation, crime, and border security are all more important to the majority of voters than abortion is.
Not a knock, just a fact.
maybe to the majority of trumpsters...

LOL, perfect.
That is galactic level irony.
Just can't address what was written to you and just have to deflect.
You're imagining that the most fervent opponents of abortion are not women.
Apparently you haven't been to church in a while.
sunday, the weekday female cult members are allowed to get off their backs and wear shoes.
Yet another useless, clueless, inane comment.
But now we know what Kamala Harris does on Sunday.

They can bill themselves as The Aristocrats

She made too many reversals, all concessions to the left.
BTW, Piers Morgan got an e-mail from a friend back in London. It said my son has now lived through two Monarchs and two Prime Ministers and he's only 4 months old!
You think all women are pro-abortion?
Concessions to the left? Cutting taxes of the wealthy is a concession to left? "Trickle-down" economics is a bullshit attempted justification of making the rich richer and the poor stagnate.
Have to laugh at the comment about the 4-month old kid.
"Already threatened in her post after a month in power, British Prime Minister Liz Truss was forced to do a new about-face on Friday on her economic program and changed her finance minister."
It's interesting to see that Boris Johnson might return as PM. We'll know next week.
Is there a Conservative in the UK who is not worried about what the left thinks of him/her?
If Boris comes back, I really think he should comb his hair this time.
Comb his hair? Thanks, I needed a laugh. A couple hours ago I heard that my 90 year old brother was dying.
I didn't think she'd last, but I thought it would take longer than this! Amazing. The next question is will Parliament call for early elections?
How does that work?
Do they go off and ask Charles to stop obsessing over Harry and Meghan and take a minute to dissolve Parliament or something like that?
You know the UK has really gone downhill when Turks and Caicos threatened to invade if they didn't shape up.
Five PM's in six years, the circle jerk continues.
That's pretty funny.
But it's not like we don't have our own problems.
(So I am not gloating.)
Heck, I wish we could have gotten rid of Trump in 45 days.
What a great gig, she will now collect a yearly 115,000 for being the shortest serving PM in history.
She has been failing up her whole career.
That's a pretty good consolation prize!
I guess she failed to Truss up the economy.
Must have been Putin's fault, right?
Nah, I think conservatives, all by themselves, are pretty good at thinking the cure for whatever ails an economy at any given time is a fresh round of tax cuts for the rich.
No, Papa Joe told you high gas prices and inflation is Putin's fault.
Are you not swallowing the swill anymore and are daring to question your hero?
Are you struggling with staying on topic?
The topic is Prime Minister LIz Truss.
I see your own comment has nothing to do with what you want ME to stick to.
Am I the only one here who thinks this comment makes no sense at all?
(We must REALLY miss Newsvine to hang around with these people.)
Here, let me post what you wrote a few minutes ago and see if you recognize it:
Your post is rather amusing because you seem to be blaming her for the economy in England. Aren't you one of those who claimed inflation is a global problem, and there really isn;t anything Biden can do to control it?
WE??
Got a mouse in your pocket?
Why subject yourself to such agony?
I'm blaming her for her proposed unfunded tax cuts which ratted UK financial markets because they were obviously very unsound economic policy.
Apparently, I do.
This time, anyway.
