Major Turbulence

Major Turbulence
Trump: “I am willing to go to jail if that’s what it takes for our country to win and become a democracy again.”

It would seem that the smooth flight of Kamala Harris and the long party in the US Stock Market have hit a bit of turbulence. As has already been reported on by one of our members, world markets are concerned with a coming recession:

Stocks plunged on Monday as U.S. recession fears caused turmoil throughout the global markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 1,000 points, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 also fell by 3.9% and 3.2%, respectively.

A weak jobs report and shrinking manufacturing activity in the world's largest economy, coupled with dismal forecasts from the big technology firms, pushed the Nasdaq 100 and Nasdaq Composite into a correction last week.

"While Friday's employment report was disappointing, it wasn't the only worrisome economic indicator, only the latest," said Greg McBride, Bankrate's chief financial analyst. "Couple economic concerns with the cacophony of earnings disappointments and weak corporate outlooks, global unrest, and currency gyrations, and you have the recipe for sudden volatility."

Stocks Tumble On Us Recession Fears | Fox Business - Community | The NewsTalkers

In other words, the chickens are coming home to roost. This is what bad policy & reckless government spending does. Weak consumer spending has finally meant less sales and higher prices. A jump in the unemployment rate by a full percentage point is a symptom of a coming recession. One thing I am pleased about is that the "magnificent seven" tech companies got hammered. Like God's gift to the left, this gets hung on the incumbent regime, which includes Kamala Harris.

The other bit of turbulence for Harris/Biden is that Homeland Security released a report showing that 99 terrorists on the terrorist watchlist were released into the country:

Scathing report reveals Biden-Harris admin has released dozens of migrants on terror watchlist into US (msn.com)

That's going to be another hard one to explain by our lying media.

Meanwhile Biden and Harris were briefed on the pending war in the middle east:

AA1oioXy.img?w=768&h=432&m=6&x=1262&y=431&s=78&d=78

Notice who is doing the talking.

In other news:

Ukraine and Russia are fighting for Toretsk, a city in the east long held by Ukraine.

A rocket attack targeting a base in Iraq wounded several American soldiers. The story thus far has been lightly reported.

The U.S. handed control of its last military base in Niger to local forces.

Debby arrived on Florida's Gulf coast as a Category 1 hurricane. At least five people died. Forecasters expect the storm to pass over Georgia and out to sea, before returning to the coast on Thursday.

The Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit that sought to delay Trump's sentencing in the preposterous Manhattan hush-money case until after the election.

As a surprise to nobody, Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz as her VP.

Will be interesting to watch to see how she crafts herself as different from Biden. Biden lost a lot of support due to the functioning of his administration. Right or wrong, the sitting president always gets the blame when the economy is bad and this economy has really hammered the low and middle class groups. I believe the #1 and #2 issues according to the electorate is the economy and immigration. After her lies about the border being secure, how will she present herself.

If she ever talks to the press, it will be interesting to see how much of the Biden administration she retains and how much she tries to pass off as the other guy.

She's not going to be able to separate herself from Biden.  She is too involved with it and the only people that will overlook it are the low IQ followers.

Her VP selection, really isn't going to do her any good either.  He failed to act during the drug overdose riots in 2020, he supports "Sanctuary Shitholes" and open borders.  He really is as much a problem as she is.

The commission was charged by the legislature for coming up with a new flag design. The current flag has been controversial for its depiction of a Native American riding off into the sunset as a farmer works his fields in the foreground. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, has refused to use the current flag or the current state emblem.

I had to look it up to see what the controversy was.

Looks like he cares about other important issues, too

Gov. Tim Walz was a guest on WCCO Sunday Morning.
"While Republicans are going to be talking about this, I am going to be building roads, bridges and water treatment plants," Walz said. "While Republicans talking about this, I am going to be making sure our kids are eating and we're creating job creation. So they can debate it in the legislature, we will see where it goes, but I think any time change comes, I think, a lot of Minnesotans, when they look, our flag looks like 19 other states."

More from the same link (I can't help myself):

Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman released a statement late Monday afternoon saying, "We changed the flag for a reason. In addition to it being a poor design, it was offensive to a large number of people. There will not be the votes to delay, reverse or put the flag to a referendum."

Why?

The name Minnesota is based on the Dakota Sioux word "Mnisota" (the native name for the Minnesota River) which means "cloudy water" or "sky-tinted water."   All State Name Origins

Not quite sure what you are trying to say here as I cannot see the counter-argument in the entire thread. One could only say 'well duh, of course the governor calls out the National Guard' as he's the head. The only way Trump would get into that decision would be if the President nationalized the National Guard. And if the President nationalized the Guard for domestic issues, wouldn't that fall under the Posse Comitatus act? Or at least have court cases come as the result?

The argument that I see is that Walz delayed in calling out the National Guard, he even admitted to that in a press conference and called it a failure of his.

Walz and his team have said they dealt with the issues as best they could, including by deploying the National Guard. The two-term governor acknowledged his decision to delay deploying the National Guard and called the city's response an "abject failure," during a press conference a few days after protests gripped the Twin Cities and the greater Minneapolis area, causing extensive damage to buildings, businesses, and a police precinct that was overrun by rioters and set ablaze. Tim Walz's handling of George Floyd protests put in spotlight | Reuters

Ahh, ok.  This posted and I saw your updates to your comment.  Ok, yes Walz did eventually call out the National Guard to help stop the riots but even he admitted it was too late. And he's been criticized for his delays in action and being too slow to react to the looting, arson and rioting. This will be fodder during the campaign to be sure.

It is simply what I'm saying. Read the link.

From the link;

Just over a month later on June 19, 2020, former President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter (now known as X),  he was actually the one to make the call, claiming he  "Forced Democrat run Minnesota to bring in the National Guard & end rioting & looting after seeing the destruction & crime in Minneapolis."

Ok, problem is that I don't read your two links (from 3.2.5 or 3.2.7) as stating that Trump was the one who called out the MN National Guard, but that he forced the state to do it. Typical bragging from Trump, after all he is the 'greatest of all time' in his mind. The actual issue is that Walz waited four days before doing anything to stop the rioting & looting. Even Walz admits that was his failure and he owned it.

So in regards to what you are saying, I am saying you are wrong in your assertion. You are trying to state that Trump claims that he activated and called out the MN National Guard and he didn't.

Umm, I'm confused. Do you mean the link in your post of 3.2.5 ? Because post 3.2.6 is my post and doesn't mention Trump except the headline and one sentence where Trump is included with others who criticize Walz.

Going to the link in your post of 3.2.5 , it states :

Just over a month later on June 19, 2020, former President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter (now known as X),  he was actually the one to make the call, claiming he  "Forced Democrat run Minnesota to bring in the National Guard & end rioting & looting after seeing the destruction & crime in Minneapolis."

That statement can also be read that Trump forced the democrat establishment in Minnesota to bring in the Guard, not that he did it himself.

Later in the article it states this :

Later that evening, an e-paper trail of Tweets showed Trump threatened to send in the National Guard, posting his now-infamous line,  "when the looting starts, the shooting starts."  A disclaimer was subsequently added to the post after the social media company deemed the language as a violation of its rules about glorifying violence.

I think we can also agree that tweets cannot call in the National Guard and there's nothing in this paragraph showing that Trump took any official act. I would like to think that we can agree that Trump has a long and sordid history of stupid tweets. But there's nothing there to indicate official acts.

Later on the link states :

While Trump did post about supporting Walz's decision should he seek military action, it wasn't until June 2020 that Trump started making public claims about calling in troops himself.

I would love to see those actual tweets as the link doesn't provide any proof of this and it wouldn't be the first time an accusation was made without any evidence of proof. Did he actually brag that he initiated the NG in that instance? I don't know because I don't have those tweets and am not really interested in trying to find them. I'm not on X or Trumps version of it. But if you fall into the group that believes Trump lies to make himself look better (which I do) then I don't know why you would believe this without any direct evidence. And if you've done the research and have the evidence, then by all means post it. But without any real evidence, this is nothing more than Trump lies to make himself look good and some news organizations make up things without evidence because they want to.

And as far as your last sentence, the only way Trump could have gotten the National Guard out himself would have been to nationalize the MN National Guard and that would have taken much longer to do. And there would be evidence with Congressional records to show that the guard had been nationalized. We know that didn't happen, so of course Trump did not personally get the National Guard out there. At best he could have put political pressure on Walz to get Walz to activate the Guard.

That is an odd view IMO. Shapiro is almost as popular in PA as Sununu is in NH. He could really help deliver PA to Harris. She needs all 4 midwestern battleground states. He would be able to be her spokesman as well. Nobody is going to think that her policy as president would be his via Israel.

That was the antisemitism of Europe almost a century ago. The antisemitism of today is based on Marxism and an idea that Israel is an oppressor.

And I know a lot of Jews who feel that way.

Maybe, but you are the only one I give discretion to.[]

Vic,

It has nothing to do wth his popularity. It has to do with the concept that is already out there about Jews, having too much power, or influence or dual loyalty. With a war going on in Israel right now, it would be the worst time to have a Jewish VP on the ticket.

That was the antisemitism of Europe almost a century ago. The antisemitism of today is based on Marxism and an idea that Israel is an oppressor.

This is simply not true. They both exist. I can give you endless examples of it coming from both extremes.

Maybe, but you are the only one I give discretion to. Any other Jew who feels that way, I declare as self-hating.

Vic, this is not about being self-hating. You have no idea what it's like being Jewish. What people have actually said to my face because I don't "look" Jewish. Until then, you have no right to say someone is a self-hating Jew.

I have to disagree on the basis of the antisemitism. This version of antisemitism which infects the democrat party is based on a perspective of Israel oppressing the Palestinians. It is a lie and Jewish Americans along with Christians should stand up against it.

This has been known for years, but no one has cared. Back in Oct. 2020, the Washington Free Beacon  reported  that “as California’s attorney general and then as U.S. senator, Harris forged a relationship with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), one of the nation’s top anti-Israel groups and advocates for boycotts of the Jewish state.” After the Hamas massacres of Oct. 7, 2023, this matters more than ever.

CAIR, the Free Beacon added, “advised Harris on community issues during her time in California politics, and she later offered the group her ‘gratitude and admiration’ in a 2018 personal letter to the group.” Specifically, “Hussam Ayloush, executive director of CAIR’s Los Angeles office, praised Harris in 2015 for including the group in an interfaith meeting with law enforcement officials. Harris, he said, ‘exemplified leadership’ by vowing to tackle Islamophobia at a time when the state’s Jewish institutions were facing threats.”

This whole thread is evidence of your ignorance of Israel and Jews in general.

I too am a grandfather and cousin and uncle and great uncle to Jews, BFD, they are family first and foremost.

I watch a lot of streaming tv series made in Israel or the West Bank. They are fairly indistinguishable political or cop stories interlaced with the black market etc., good cop bad cop, love affairs and alcoholism.

The one thing some of the characters remind me of is the novel of interviews with black housekeepers of rich southern white women. "The Help"...Many Palestinians feel no different about their second class status in Israel, Gazza or the West Bank and it been that way since 1948.

Living in Arizona, I would not have supported Mark Kelly. I've never liked him. The way he dragged Gabby Giffords out and used her as a prop for his campaigning, the games he has played with the 2nd Amendment and the simple fact that he votes 95% of the time following his party rather than representing the State of Arizona.

I don't know if Tim Waltz will help or hurt the Harris campaign as I don't know enough about him. He was a moderate while in Congress and became progressive as a Governor. We'll see how it all goes, but to be far it's Harris that gets to set the tone for the campaign. His job will be to fall in line with the platform.

As for Kelly possibly costing Democrats that Senate seat, the Arizona GOP has not been selecting good candidates for Senator for the past few cycles. Kelly won a special election in 2020 against Marth McMasters who IMO was a very weak candidate and again in 2022 against Blake Masters who is a far-right extremist.

The argument for Kelly (and I agree with you about him) is that he ran better than Biden did in Arizona.  Shapiro, obviously, ran much better than Biden did in Pennsylvania.  Walz actually underperformed Biden in Minnesota. . From a pure "who helps win an election" standpoint, every additional vote in Arizona and  Pennsylvania  is critical while Minnesota doesn't matter.

Recession is on the horizon.

Perhaps. One of the flashing red signs of impending recession is the unemployment rate jumping 1/2 a point and usually happens before anybody officially comes out and says recession. Not to say it's definite, but it's more likely today. Current prognosticating however doesn't have it actually happening before 2025/2026.

I think a bigger impact to the election will be the September Fed meeting. Will they cut interest rates (yes, probably) and how large? A larger cut would be very good news for the Harris campaign as it could provide a quick bump to the economy which would make people happier with the current administration.

Blah, blah, blah.  Missing a jobs forecast ain't particularly noteworthy.  The jobs forecast has been wide of the mark many times since the pandemic.   An unemployment rate of 4.3 pct is still full employment so that's just whining at the moon.  The Wall Street gamblers are making bets on WAGS and looking for any CYA excuse to hide their own stupidity.

The global economy is in the crapper and headed for recession.  And the US Fed isn't in a position to bail out central banks around the world.  We're still fighting inflation.  If the Fed switches to easy money now to save the UK, Germany, Japan, and the BRICS then we are screwed.

You know, if the United States had an industrial based economy then this wouldn't be a problem at all.  We'd be more insulated from a global recession.  But, no, the financial shysters have to drag us down the toilet to save their own asses.

Tim Walz represented the Minnesota 1st district (borders Iowa) from 2006 to 2018.  The Minnesota 1st district is decidedly conservative and today is Trump country.  Walz ran for governor in 2018 because he had no chance of reelection in the House race.

People don't seem to want to understand that the Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) of MN was more like Eisenhower Republicans; typical of conservative Democrats.  The DFL was corrupted by the national Democratic Party which has transformed Minnesota into a purple state.  Tim Walz' political roots are more Republican than Democrats want to acknowledge.

The question is whether or not Democrats are trying to revive the political legacy of Ronald Reagan.  Tim Walz' positions as a House Rep. were consistent with those of Reagan Democrats, like Clinton and Biden.  Walz may have been selected to serve as a Joe Biden, Jr., in a possible Harris administration.  But Tim Walz may not be capable of blunting Harris' left wing proclivities; Walz is too affable for that role.

It can be a good word and some progressive policies can be good. But just like right-leaning policies can go too far, I think Tim went a little too far left with some of his policies. I mean, a hot line to rat out your neighbors if they left their house?

But at the end of the day, issue positioning matters a lot. There is a reason Walz is less popular in a light-blue state than Josh Shapiro is in a purple state — indeed, when Walz shared a ballot in his own state with the moderate Amy Klobuchar, her victory margin (24 points) was more than double his (11.4 points). It’s not because Walz is less likable than Shapiro or Klobuchar. It’s because he’s less moderate.

Walz had a fairly conservative voting record in Congress, where he represented a red district. He used that record to win the governorship, and then moved sharply left. The lesson he seems to have taken from this experience is that there is no cost in adopting progressive positions across the board. “Don’t ever shy away from our progressive values,” Walz said on a recent call. “One person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness.”

Sure, why not? I could even go for an Eisenhower Republican right now. Whatever you think of me, I'm not a far left liberal.

Yeah, left center seems to consistently come through.  And compromise with the right center has historically been achievable.  Unfortunately that's an old-fashioned normal.  GenZ doesn't have a clue because they have never experienced that kind of normal.

Today's problem is that the extremes take hostages (like Hamas) and negotiate for a ceasefire in-place rather than a compromise.

e Democratic Farmer Labor Party (DFL) of MN was more like Eisenhower Republicans; typical of conservative Democrats

That's not true at all. The DFL is a fusion of the Democratic Party and the Farmer Labor Party which was explicitly progressive and aligned with socialists.  The farmer labor party was never, in any sense of the word, conservative, and pulled the DFL well to the left of the mainstream national democrats.

Tim Walz' political roots are more Republican than Democrats

The liberal pundit, Johnathon Chait, called him the most left wing governor in the country, as one would expect from someone with DFL roots.

That is simply not true.  Democrats have pushed and rewritten the history but that doesn't make it true. That narrative ignores the Scandinavian influence on Minnesota politics.  It is true that Scandinavians tend to be social liberals (and could be viewed as farther left than Democrats) but they're extraordinarily conservative otherwise.  Farmers tend to be hard nosed conservatives on the things that matter.

It wasn't that long ago that there was a split in the DFL to sever ties with the national Democratic Party.  In the end money won out.  Now a lot of traditional DFL members have turned Republican.  Southern Minnesota really is Trump country and that's not going to change.

The liberal pundit, Johnathon Chait, called him the most left wing governor in the country, as one would expect from someone with DFL roots.

Tim Walz is a farmer from Nebraska.  Gwen Walz is Minnesotan.  Walz couldn't have won 6 House terms by being left wing on fiscal issues, environmental issues, or energy issues.

Tim Walz seems to be moderate because he is liberal on the ass-grabbing stuff and he is conservative on the governing stuff.  Walz doesn't straddle the fence; he hops from one side to the other.

I don't even know how this is debatable.  It's not some giant conspaticy. From Wikipedia on the party's founding:

In March 1923, the Farmer–Labor Party of Chicago broke away from the CPPA and decided to proceed to the immediate formation of a national Farmer–Labor political organization. Circa May, over the signature of J.G. Brown of the Farmer–Labor Party of the United States there was issued a call for a "Monster Political Convention of the Workers of America" to meet in Chicago on July 3. The convention call was issued to trade unions, state Farmer–Labor Parties, the  Non-Partisan League , the Socialist Party, and the  Workers Party

Do you know who the Workers Party was?  It was the front for the American Communist Party.   The idea that these were a bunch of Eisenhower Republicans is absurd.

W alz couldn't have won 6 House terms by being left wing on fiscal issues, environmental issues, or energy issues.

Do you consider Barack Obama a right winger too?  He won Walz's district twice  and sure didn't have a problem wining the state.  Nor did the the state have any problem electing  the man most widely considered to be the most progressive man in the Senate of his era (Paul Wellstone) either.

Minnesota has voted for the Democrats as reliably  as any other state since FDR.   Only Eisenhower and Nixon (in 72) have won there as Republicans.  I don't think any other state has been that reliably democratic for that long.

Trump: “I am willing to go to jail if that’s what it takes for our country to win and become a democracy again.”

What a coincidence.  Millions of citizens are also willing to put Trump in jail if that’s what it takes for our country to win and become a democracy again.

Trump: “I am willing to go to jail if that’s what it takes for our country to win and become a democracy again.”

"Willing to"? Like you have a choice. You're going to jail because you're a criminal, it has nothing to do with you wanting Orban's version of Democracy.
