Convention week
“Our election is about understanding the importance of this beautiful country of ours in terms of what we stand for around the globe as a democracy. As a democracy. We know there’s a duality to the nature of democracy.”

Link to quote: Kamala  Harris: Democracy Is "Incredibly Strong And Incredibly Fragile" | Video | RealClearPolitics

It is convention week for the democrats. It is also the coronation of what became the democrat candidate after the candidate who won the nomination was pushed out by democrat elites & donors. Kamala Harris was given a storybook rollout with the endorsement of just about every noteworthy democrat. The party immediately coalesced around her like trained pigs. Her campaign wisely learned the lesson of Sarah Palin and kept her scripted without a press conference or interview for weeks (29 days this far.)  The media did their part as they did in the last Presidential election. We saw Harris in carefully staged "rallies," using platitudes, completely devoid of substance. There has been very little attempt to vet or question Harris. I suppose a lot of the energy coming from the left is due to the relief of having Joe Biden replaced.

19themorning-nl-qpvh-jumbo.jpg

All that being said, and despite the Harris campaign trying to reinvent her, Harris when given the chance has made some missteps.

1) She boycotted Prime Minister Netanyahu's address to congress.
2) She chose the most radical candidate available as her running mate. A man who embellishes his military record.
3) Her campaign decided to roll out her policies, the most important being the economy, and she laid out a Socialist price control scheme.

The Harris sugar high may already be over. According to certain polls, such as that of likely voters in Pennsylvania conducted by Cygnal and Emerson College now give Trump a 1-point lead in the all-important battleground state of Pennsylvania, which comes with 20 Electoral College votes.

Pennsylvania Polls | FiveThirtyEight

PA voters may not like Trump, but they do appreciate his apparent toughness on trade, immigration, crime and the fact that he stands for the type of energy production so important to PA. In other battleground states Harris is either slightly ahead or tied .. for now.

The 2024 Democratic National Convention runs from today through Thursday, Aug. 23. The convention is taking place this year in Chicago, Illinois at the United Center. Tonight, will feature what I prefer to call a disingenuous testimonial to Joe Biden. Hillary Clinton will also speak tonight.

Democrats released their party platform. It mentioned Donald Trump over 150 times.

Massive protests are expected from the left wing of the party, which is unhappy with the Biden administration’s handling of Israel’s war in Gaza. The United Center has been fenced off from the rest of the city. Many downtown businesses have already boarded up their properties. Protest leaders have warned city leaders not to try to reroute the protests.

In other news:

During a trip to Israel, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that recent negotiations had created one of the best chances for reaching a cease fire in Gaza.

Volodymyr Zelensky wants to hold Russian territory as leverage for future talks to end the war in Ukraine.

House Republicans formally made their case for impeaching Joe Biden.

Hurricane Ernesto threatens beach goers on the east coast with swells and rip currents. Powerful storms caused flash flooding on Long Island.

Good morning.

I'd stay away from Chicago today. The specter of violence should spoil the interest any tourist might have for a deep-dish pizza. Michigan Avenue could get bloody.

The question is: How much violence will there be?

There was a protest march down the Grant Park side of Michigan Avenue last night. There were all sorts of bystanders watching from the sidewalks (and probably from the hotel room windows.) The ones I saw on tv didnt appear to terrorized.

download-2024-08-19T091811.203-2024-08-ea19b2972cfa58abce59679173c6ab3c.jpg?im=FitAndFill=(596,336)

Most of the protests are scheduled to be away from downtown, closer to the convention center, about 2 1/2 miles from Michigan Ave.

The weather is refreshing in Chicago this week (about 80 every day) and the convention goers and media will have a great time in their off hours spent in this great city.

Right, it looked more like the freak wing of protesters (Gays for Hamas!) with not much of the actual types who will do damage.  I'll stand by my prediction that the protests will just be dramatic posturing with tough talk for the cameras (like the terrorist threats the crowd chanted last night) without much action.

Protests that get out of control tend to be more spontaneous. These groups have been getting permits and organizing for a year

Though your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago
Just to sing
In a land that's known as freedom
How can such a thing be fair
Won't you please come to Chicago
For the help we can bring
We can change the world

Re-arrange the world

R ALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) - Vice President Kamala Harris addressed a few hundred supporters at a campaign rally in Raleigh Friday afternoon.

Harris’s staff reported that about 250 people were in attendance. The event began around 2:30 p.m. at Wake Tech Community College’s campus.

I don't have to hope and pray. I'm sure Harris may win the popular vote, but that isn't the one that counts.

I agree with David Axelrod:

"Nonetheless, Axelrod suggested it is too early to call it a race for Harris, who is slightly leading the former president in some national polls.

“But this is still a very competitive race. If the election were today, I’m not sure who would win and I think it may well be President Trump, because it’s an Electoral College fight, ” Axelrod said."

David Axelrod says Donald Trump might win election if it was held today (thehill.com)

We do love when your neo-Fascist leader speaks off script though:

If you dont think the vast number of delegates and journalists will have a great time in Chicago this week you are delusional. Tens of millions of people visit Chicago every year and most of them love it.

You have sheltered yourself with the fantasy that Chicago is a hell hole under siege. Just this summer Chicago hosted a NASCAR race in Grant Park and one of the largest music festivals in the world.

Lollapalooza is indeed one of the largest and most iconic music festivals in the world.... The festival, held annually in Chicago’s Grant Park, attracts around 400,000 attendees each year 1 2 .

We also had an air and water show that attracts a million people to the lakefront.

This past week's crime stories:

1) Illegal aliens were arrested for rapes of 2 women in NYC.

2) Illegal aliens were arrested for the rape of a pregnant woman in MA, & the attempted rape of another woman in MA.

3) A Peruvian gang leader wanted for 23 murders also arrested.

If you happen to see any of these men, give ICE a call:

A term loosely applied to any social theory or sociological analysis which draws on the ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, but amends or extends these, usually by incorporating elements from other intellectual traditions—such as, for example, psychoanalysis (as in the case of critical theory), Weberian sociology (as in Erik Olin Wright's theory of contradictory class locations), or anarchism (as in the example of critical criminology).

Local news just showed the gathering site for the first "huge protest" of the week.  The reporter said there are "hundreds" of people there. Maybe it is a late arriving crowd, but the organizer said something interesting saying  -   that he is still expecting "thousands" to protest today.  He didnt sound totally convincing, but we will see.

Democrats released their party platform. It mentioned Donald Trump over 150 times.

It would appear that the Democrats put a lot of thought & effort into their 2024 platform. Too bad they didn't read it over themselves.

The official platform of the Democrat Party was released Saturday and makes several references to a "second Biden term" despite President Biden dropping out of the race a month ago.

On Monday night, the party will vote on the platform that makes 19 references to a second Biden term.

"President Biden,   Vice President Harris , and Democrats are running to finish the job," the 92-page document reads.

On another page, the document says, "In President Biden’s second term, he will continue selecting judges who will protect fundamental rights and who represent the diversity of the American experience."

Further on, the document says, "in his second term, President Biden will continue to support access to FDA-approved medication abortion..."

Roughly a month ago, Biden exited the race after weeks of insisting he was "in it to win it." He faced mounting pressure from Democratic lawmakers and leaders to withdraw from the race due referencing his age and cognitive decline. After announcing his departure on the social media platform X, he endorsed Harris to lead the Democratic ticket.

J oe Biden will deliver his political swan song tonight at the Democratic National Convention as Kamala Harris will accept the presidential nomination in Chicago but the Bidens will not stay put at Chicago to attend Kamala Harris' event scheduled on Thursday. They will fly to California for a six-day vacation and they will not be there to attend former president Barack Obama's speech at the convention either. In fact, Republicans claimed that Barack Obama will neither stay for Kamala's speech hinting at a massive internal feud among the Democrats.

Why Joe Biden, Jill will skip Kamala Harris, Barack Obama's speeches at DNC (msn.com)

What it is is a symbolic turning of the party over to Harris, which happens at every normal national convention.  It doesnt happen at the last three GOP conventions because Trump has the MAGA base in thrall and the normal Republicans cant stand him.

Right now, it is 10:56 PM EST. Joe Biden was supposed to speak at 11:PM and be on his way out by midnight. His party continues to disrespect him by allowing a long list of abortion speakers preempt him. It is truly astounding how much abortion means to this political party. They are celebrating it right now. The current president who was already scheduled for the 11:PM hour is now left waiting.
