Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that’s associated with death, but it’s far from a sad holiday. Instead, it’s a time to celebrate the lives of those who have died with food, dancing, music and brightly colored decor, clothing and makeup. Wondering how to celebrate Día de Los Muertos ? We've got answers.
Many Day of the Dead celebrations include lively festivals and families are known to create ofrendas to remember their deceased loved ones. We were recently invited to be a part of San Antonio’s Day of the Dead celebration, which is the biggest in America, and got an even better idea of what the holiday is all about. So between that event, my personal experience—I'm Mexican and my family makes ofrendas every year—and popular traditions, here is exactly how to celebrate Day of the Dead in 2024.
To me Halloween has always been about the supernatural, the occult (hidden) eerie part of life if you will. The day of the dead aspect so to speak. In the last couple decades Halloween has become about blood and gore (or sexy costumes) for adults. I guess it started with the movie Halloween.
My daughter and son-in-law have an annual Halloween bash. Every year is a different theme for costumes. This year was video game characters. Last year was the best...Disney villains.

To me Halloween has always been about dressing up, trick or treating, having fun and watching horror movies. My son is not a huge horror movie fan, but we used to sit and watch the family ones like Halloweentown on the Disney channel every year when he was young enough.

Being 12 when Halloween came out I probably didn't see that movie for a few years and then when it was edited for television. Interestingly enough there is really very little blood in the movie and almost no gore. The director thought that playing into people's imagination would be scarier than putting it on screen. Things amped up when the movie Friday The 13th came out to capitalize on Halloween's popularity.
There is always those who push the boundaries using sex and gore. I tend to avoid the movies that add that stuff simply for shock value. The Evil Dead came out in 1981 and that was shocking for the time, but seem mostly tame these days.
To me, as a 74 year old kid, Halloween is about having fun. As a young kid, of course it was about having fun, but the candy was a big part of it too. For many years, my wife and I would turn off all the lights and go some somewhere because she felt it was unhealthy to give kids all that sugar. Well it isn't very healthy, but so what. It is only one night a year. And besides that, do I eat healthy food every night of the year??? Hardly!!!
So... What was your favorite costume as a kid?
When I was at the trick or treat age, I had a bone desiese that reqired me to wear a stiff brace on my leg. My older sisters and parents thought up the perfect costume for me. They tore up old bed sheets into strips and then wrapped me up head to toe with these strips. I was... "The Mummy"...
Now, at long last, we are going to get into the spirit of things again. We will be dispensing candy, to all the trick-or-treaters who come to our house. I will be the wearwolf, and my wife will be a butterfly.
What will you be this Halloween?
BTW - Hi to all my Newstalker buddies. Do you remember me? My handle was Malamuteman, or Mal.
To me... as a kid... it was about getting to play a scary character and, of course, the candy. Now, as a 74 year old man, it is about pretending to be a kid.
