The reformation of American education

The reformation of American education
“We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing,” Trump said during the 2024 campaign.

The Department of Education was created by then president Jimmy Carter in 1979, fulfilling a campaign promise to teachers’ unions. At the time I recall a bit of a debate about the cost with one democrat member of congress blurting out something about the need to change attitudes. Over time the Department has become a part of the permanent federal bureaucracy, and it has developed a decidedly ideological bent. The other problem is that since Carter created the Department, the US standing in education has dropped dramatically.

The most recent  National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as The Nation’s Report Card,  found that barely a quarter or less of students are proficient in reading, and even less are proficient in math, geography, and U.S. history. U.S. 4th and 8th graders are  performing worse  not only compared to East Asian countries, but also to  such places  as Poland, the U.K., South Africa, Turkey, and Sweden, all of which have boosted their scores.

The Great Dumbing Down of American Education - The American Mind

President Trump wants to end the experiment of controlling American education through Federal programs and money. Trump cannot simply abolish the Education Department as he would like since he would need congressional support and that may be a bridge too far for those who want to be reelected. However, what he can do is to downsize the Department. Last night, more than a thousand employees were sent “reduction in force” notices shortly after 6 p.m. ET.  The new Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, plans to slash nearly half of its 4,400 workers, and terminate leases on buildings in New York, Boston, Chicago and other cities.

The Teachers Unions are angry, and they have every right to be. The AFT and its sister union, the National Education Association, have reaped the benefits of the Department's steady growth. Since the establishment of the Department per-student spending consistently increases, school officials hire more staff and the test scores and reading proficiency of the students has declined.  And what did the unions demand during the pandemic?  School closures.

Trump is right as usual. It is time to turn to school choice, parental preferences and giving education back to the states.

In other news:

Ukraine said it would support the Trump administration’s plan for a 30 day cease fire. Russia has not yet declined or accepted the deal. In exchange for Ukraine’s cooperation, the U.S. resumed military assistance and intelligence sharing. Now it is Russia which could be facing pressure from the Trump administration.

Russian forces are assaulting Sudzha, the main town in the part of its Kursk region that Ukraine captured last year.

Canada backed down on a threat to place a surcharge on electricity it supplies to certain parts of the US. Meanwhile Trump's 25% tariff on metals entering the US went into effect. The European Union announced retaliatory tariffs.

A senior official at U.S.A.I.D. ordered employees to destroy classified documents. That sounds like a criminal offense to me. Well, AG Bondi?

The House passed a bill to fund the government through the fall. It will need some democrat support in the US Senate. Will democrats shut down the government? We will know by Friday.

Separatists in Pakistan hijacked a train with about 400 people aboard and threatened to kill the passengers unless the government agreed to a prisoner exchange.

Chinese warships boldly sailed around Australia for nearly a month.

Large protests erupted in the streets of New York City, as it now seems that the American left is supporting a Palestinian activist who held a green card and is married to an American, and fomented unrest at Columbia University among other things. He is now under arrest.

Good morning and welcome to the news.

Ukraine presents U.S. State Secretary Rubio with unique war-time icon.

Part of the cease fire that Rubio advanced was the demand for the release of prisoners, civilians, and the return of Ukrainian children. The icon was made from an ammunition box.

"Chinese warships boldly sailed around Australia for nearly a month."

Is that supposed to mean the same thing as American warships sailing through the Taiwan Straits?  It's not as if Chna put a nuclear sub or carrier in the middle of The Gulf of "America, is it?

By the way, I've been posting on NT for years my opinion that American education was inferior, which I FIRST discovered when I was a teenager.

Yep, that’s why so many want to get educated in the US.

For an inferior education.

Ridiculous!

For an inferior education?   For continuing their education at a superior university, but not for primary or high school education.  Both my kids got their Master's degrees at American universities - but fortunately for them all of their prior education was in Canada.

Ah, I see what you are saying and agree.    Many of our public school are failing our kids.    In spite of paying more per student than many other nations.

I blame liberal support of teacher unions.     Studies shows “schools of choice” not under the union thumb, are generally performing better.

Thank you for that comment Sparty On.  The only example I know of about a young Chinese student going overseas to study in a school before university level is the 11 year old daughter of a doctor friend here who is now at a private school in a town near where I was born and grew up in Ontario.  Before the pandemic I was helping her with her English, and I'm glad she succeeded sufficiently to go where she went because I believe she will be well educated.

The other problem is that since Carter created the Department, the US standing in education has dropped dramatically.

Anyone that says the Department of Education is needed for the children are lying sacks of shit and should be called out as such.  The department of education has had decades to prove they can improve education for kids in the US and have failed miserably.

He simply adjourned the meeting?

I think adjournment was the right path.

If he kept it going the jackass would keep on running his mouth and the dude/chick would have gotten more exposure and time on the news cycle.

Shutting him up shut that all down.

But it was hilarious.

Personally as soon as the moron said you would not continue the meeting with him I would have asked him to leave and go to the safe room with puppies, I am sure the dems have one close by.

Funding shouldn't be an issue given the waste that was already identified and cut.  Democrats will probably vote against it just out of their normal pathetic reasons like their slush funds being shut down.

Jeremy

I get your point and agree that if a few democrats do not vote for a CR which they abhor the government will close for a bit - the consequences of which are largely a matter of opinion.

But would you consider this view of the situation - shouldn't the Republicans have worked with the Democrats to come up with a bill both could stomach, assuming the Republicans were smart enough to know that the bill would not pass with Republican voters alone.

The democrats in the House took the position that they would stand back and allow the Republicans to do as they will and to let the Republicans bear responsibility for the same.

I am not sure that The Republicans care whether the government shouts down for a while - it would make the dismantling and destruction of said government easier for them

Why wouldn't Democrats work with Republicans?  If they put aside their petty bullshit, a budget and bill can be worked out so that we won't have to worry about shutdowns again.

The democrats in the House took the position that they would stand back and allow the Republicans to do as they will and to let the Republicans bear responsibility for the same

We all know what position the Democrats have taken.  It won't help the people they are tasked to represent, but that hasn't stopped them before.

I come from and still own property in a small rural county seat in Oklahoma. There have been about twenty people at various federal offices laid off already. Farm finance, soil conservation, adult education and agriculture research offices are closing and many jobs are being eliminated or consolidated elsewhere. The ripple effect of losing only 20-30 good local jobs, those families selling out and moving on, will have enormous local financial blowback...

The lesson to be learned from the Dept. of Education is that neo-Democracy is built upon the power of coercion.  Has the country finally become disenchanted with the secular humanism of neo-Democracy?  Is the country ready for some Old Time Religion?  Tune in tomorrow for another exciting episode of "Mr. McBride goes to the Lady's Room".  As they say at the cattlemen's club, "Can't beat that meat, gents".

Zelensky is out, Zelensky is in.  Reality doesn't match the contrived pontification by the American press.  Now we get to see the fashion parade between Trump and Putin.  Any guesses who's lipstick will get smeared?

They just shut down the section of the Department of Ed that measures student performance. Shutdown of education standards first while they dismantle the rest gradually.

No more reporting on how badly students are doing or even if there is improvement in student performance. No standards required.

The new king will just announce he is in charge and all students are exceptional because he has decreed it. He will claim American exceptionalism is back again. MAGA!

Tearing everything down is more costly than rebuilding and fixing problems that need addressed.

Leaving each state entirely on their own is going to leave red states in a bad way when it comes to education.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch.    As it is and always will be, unless you work for the fed, state or skeeved tenure from a failing education system, people lose jobs every day and people get jobs every day.

Welcome to the real world federal employees.    Do your job and you can thrive.    Don’t do your job and get canned.   That said, if you do lose your job, try to find a liberal to feel sorry for you.    If you are lucky they might buy you a Chai tea and a scone.    Maybe even a pop tart.

They probably won’t offer you a job though because not many of them actually create jobs.    Many of them are sucking off the government titty as well.

Welcome to the suck.
