The First 3D Printed House Is Coming, And The Construction Industry Will Never Be The Same

Business Insider By France Costrel and Sam Rega 11 hours ago

Architects around the globe are racing to build the world's first 3D printed houses a breakthrough with profound implications for housing affordability and customization.

In China, a company named Winsun this yearsaid it built 10 3D printed houses in just one day. The reported cost for each: just $5,000.

In Amsterdam, a team of architects has started construction of the 3D Print Canal House , using bio-based, renewable materials. The site is both construction site and public museum; President Obama was among the visitors this year. Hedwig Heinsman, co-founder of DUS architects , the team behind the project, tells Business Insider that in addition to being ec0-friendly, "The main goal, I think, is really to deliver custom-made architecture."

3D printers build structures layer by layer. But at USC in California, Professor Behrokh Khoshnevis is pushing the fabrication process one step further with what he calls "contour crafting." He hopes to develop a gigantic 3D printer, able to print whole house in a single run, from its structure to its electrical and plumbing conduits.

The revolution in 3D printed housing, in other words, is well underway.

This sounded unbelievable to me , however here is a video of the process . Apparently it does not include the roofing :

And I'm guessing they still need laborers to assemble the panels into houses . How do they hold the panels together ? I have no idea ...

I am so amazed at this. When I think of what the next 50 years is going to be like, I sure wish I could return to being a teenager (with all my present knowledge, of course). The big question is how much power the vested interests will have to block anything that affects their bottom line.

Technology is getting faster than anyone could have expected.

It is advancing exponentially.

The real estate market in the US is already in a mess due to the aftermath of the subprime mortgage mess . People who currently own houses may have trouble selling their property when they want to . This technology might make that economics even worse ... but I'm just speculating on the possible effects .

BTW here is another link about this topic with another video . Perhaps you can view this one ?

I thought it was amazing when I saw the first wrench from a 3D printer. This is really a giant step from that.

When you say "giant step" you mean that literally ...

Can't open any of the videos. There are some that I can open, but not these. YouTube is blocked here in China. However, if you provided the alternative for me, Petey, I appreciate your having been considerate.

Here are some other advanced materials methods used to construct houses :

Extremely lightweight but strong concrete blocks :

Blue Max "mortar" :

FlexLock construction :

In comparison I would expect that the first one would compare favorably with the 3D printed panels in terms of being light in weight & high in strength . Perhaps combing the Blue Max mortar with the CMU light blocks would be as good or better than the 3D printed house . Would it be better for insulation & sound proofing ? Not if those 3D panels are laid flat down and put in layers . So perhaps this is really a superior method and no doubt a lot cheaper . I'm still not clear on how they level the panels and anchor them to the ground ... Then there's the issue of waterproofing and attaching doors & windows .

I used these to build an addition on my house. They are wonderful, fast and insulate like crazy.
