Storm is Coming - Photos
Photos taken at "Lake of the Woods'', whichlies in both Minnesota and Canada.
The photos, top to bottom, show a violent storm forming. You can see the storm staring to form in the top photo, then break up a bit, then come together again.
After the last photo, we headed for shore at top speed. Before we got to shore, the storm hit. Thunder, lightening, 4 inches of rain in less than an hour and winds of 40 to 45 MPH.
The North Country has interesting weather.
Lake of the Woods is a massive body of water. It lies in both Minnesota and Canada. 70 miles long and wide, it has over 10,000 islands on it and 65,000 miles of shore line.
These photos were taken from Shinnob Bay in the Northwest Angle. The northern most USpoint in the lower 48. You can only get to it via driving through Canada, or in the winter, via ice road over the lake. Both ways are interesting.
To us old timers, it's known as Lac des Bois, mostly French and Ojibwe speakers.
Here is a link with more information on the lake.
I thoroughly enjoy storms of all kinds. Lightning and thunder may be my favorite. These are really good storm photos.
Very cool pictures, Kavika. You did a great job of not only the colors but the storm formation.
A storm forming over water is so much more dynamic than one over land . Nicely done .
Well done! These have both aesthetic and documentary value.
Atmospheric ionization associated with storms generate colors that are unique, dramatic and beautiful. You captured them. What is most impressive about these shots is the fact that the high degree of contrast is preserved, adding of course to their drama -- lots of images like these suffer from areas of under exposure, over exposure and loss of detail. Your images handled those potential problems admirably!
Thanks Grump, we waited until pass the last minute to get the photos and got drenched on the ride to shore. The lightning was a good scare as well.
Thanks Perrie, it was a beauty of a storm.
Thanks Petey, when these storm hit there, you have to be prepared to head for shore NOW...The lake is huge and can be very dangerous if your caught in one of these storms.
Thanks Mac, I was really excited about the way they turned out. We waited past the time we should have headed for shore to get the shots. By the time we got to shore, we were in 3 foot rollers, lightning and heavy rain.
It was worth it.
Beautiful photos Kavika. The storm I guess I should be concerned with is going to be coming up the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina as I will be 60 miles at the most from the the coast at the border of NC and SC.
Beautiful pictures!!! I'm so glad to made it to shore safely!
Thanks for sharing these with us-- the lake is beautiful!
Thanks Six. Be careful, I see where the storm headed towards you could be a bad one.
Thanks Dowser, the lake is really something to behold.
Beautiful pictures. Another beautiful place I would like to see. I couldn't help but think of the following song when I saw the title.
Hi Steve, good to see you again.
It's a wonderful and beautiful. Nature at it finest.
Perfect video. Gimme Shelter, we were sure looking for it a few minutes after the last photo.
Stay safe, Sixpick. It's a nasty storm! We got hammered (SE Florida) with just the outter bands.
Good to be back and to see you also. Been a busy couple of months. I've never been on a lake when a storm hit, always managed to get off.
I always tell the kids ( they're in their 30's) at work that there is a song for everything. And if I don't know one, I'll make my own song.
Glad you make it back safe.
Lake of the Woods is massive. 70 miles by 70 miles. Storms up there will swamp 40 ft boats in a heartbeat.
I lived in the area for many years, and am well experienced on that lake. I took a bit of a chance to get the photos. We could have made it to an island, but decided to run for shore, we made it. We were in a 20 Ranger with a 225 Opti Max engine, and we were flat out
Great pictures Kavika. I love storms, especially the wind. We had strong ones here for the past couple of days with lightening hits very close to the car. Sometimes it felt like it went through the car. Beautiful.
Don't be out in the lightning Palma. I don't want to see you lite up...
Nah, it will be like fighting fire with fire.
Have a great holiday my friend
Absolutely great photos, Kavika. I just returned from a place where it rained 18 out of 20 days.
Buzz,
Good to see you. I hadn't seen you for a while and was concerned.
Happy that you enjoyed them Buzz. 18 out of 20, oh my, not so good.
How are you doing Buzz?
I was travelling. Just got back at 3 a.m. last night.
Back to teaching. For the summer I have more private one-on-one students than I can handle, so I won't be spending much time on NT.
Do they need someone to teach them Ojibwe?
Once you let THAT cat out of the bag to foreigners your brethren can no longer be code-talkers. Better to keep it in-house. You never know what the future might bring.
LOL, that's true Buzz. Our secret weapon.
