Just noticed this article. Fog (probably smog) is something I've become very used to living where I am. However, it's not always a bad thing. It brings with it an air of mystery, even sometimes doom. Good to see your photos, evilgenius.
That's up near Munising, isn't it; at least I think I've seen that stuff there. Of course, those old piers and smelters are all over that coast line, so it could be somewhere else. The building is from the pier for an old iron smelter. If it's the place I'm thinking of, part of the smelter is up there too, just inland from there. The ore was partially smelted and formed into pellets with a high iron content. The transport ship then came alongside the pier and opened her hatches. The pellets were then placed on a conveyor and dumped into the hold. The ships then went down the Lakes to Pittsburgh, where the pellets were further refined into steel. By partially smelting the ore into pellets on the spot, it cut down on loading and unloading time, which is the most expensive part of running an ore ship.
Very nice pictures genius. Were they taken within the last few days? I noticed that there's still drift ice on the lake, while down here near Grand Rapids, it was 81 degrees today. An extra 200 miles north sure does make a difference.
This was taken last Tuesday evening on the Duluth, MN Lake walk. I recently fount out that the structure is an old pier. The lake still had 3% ice coverage that day and it was in the mid 30's while we took the pictures. It was 84 yesterday.
Heavy. Just saw on the news that some guys up there decided that swimming among the ice floes was a fun idea. From what the video showed, I don't think that idea stayed with them very long. Last time I saw guys walking on the water like that was when a fifteen foot Tiger Shark came cruising around the point while we were swimming in Subic Bay.
If I hadn't stopped to eat before going to the Lake Walk there would have been much less fog.
Nice. What is the story on that building?
Really nice photos. Very moody.
Good question Gary.
Thanks Gary. Off the top of my head I don't know. I may have at one time, but it's just always been there.
Thanks Perrie!
That's my girlfriend.
Great photos of Gitchi Gumi. The old Ojibwe saying is the ''Gitchi Gumi, doesn't give up her dead''...Could apply to the buildings.
She's old and cold, Kavika. Nice to hear from you again.
''She's old and cold'', that sure is a true statement evil.
Good to see you posting again.
An ice house or cold storage would make sense.
Fog is inherently spiritual and in a photograph, it unifies all.
Nice work; thanks for posting.

Thanks Buzz. The fog was getting pretty thick. I love the fog.
Fog and snow have a unifying effect on photo subjects.

Yup there are dummies everywhere...LOL.
Yeah, but no tiger sharks in Superior.
True... no tigar sharks, but we do have lampreys...LOL
Yes, and they are a scourge. I recall when they were first discovered in the lakes, brought in by means of the ballast in ocean-going ships.
