Chimamanda Adichie: ‘America Is No Longer America’

As a citizen, things have changed for me. I mean, you have to remember that I come from Nigeria, where, growing up, America was the place where everything went the way it was supposed to go. And the reality is that Nigeria and the U.S. are the same now. Someone said to me, “Are you thinking about moving back to Nigeria?” Well, no, because it’s the same.

Beckerman:  Nigeria moved to you.

Adichie:  The only difference is that I don’t have to use my generator as much here in the U.S. In Nigeria today, we have a president who, in my opinion, was not elected. And Nigerian politics has always been a politics of patronage: the Big Man, and you give your friends jobs, that kind of thing. But I think that Nigerian leaders, even if they just pay lip service to ideas like competence, they are not likely to be so brazen about creating sort of long, lasting actions from personal vengeance. It’s the brazenness of it [in the U.S.] that just feels to me stranger, stranger than Nigeria.

I’ve heard from a solid source that medical supplies from US to frontline medics in Ukraine are being withheld through USAID and military logistics. If true this is absolutely unacceptable.

The best proof so far that Trump is a budding authoritarian is the fact the numerous 'elites', from college faculty to news executives, to congresspeople (even from the other party) are bowing to him due to fear.  The quelling of dissent is an essential aspect of an authoritarian government.

Does Elon Musk Actually Know What a ‘Ponzi Scheme’ Is?

  From CNBC:

Social Security has never missed a benefit payment since the program first began   sending individuals monthly benefits   more than eight decades ago. But the recent actions at the U.S. Social Security Administration by   Elon Musk ’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency are putting monthly benefit checks for more than   72.5 million Americans   at risk, former commissioner and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley told CNBC.com. “Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits,” O’Malley said. “I believe you will see that within the next 30 to 90 days.” Ahead of any interruption in benefits, “people should start saving now,” O’Malley said.

Eighty years, and not a single missed payment. Now that’s what I call an efficient government service. If I were running a fake Cabinet operation that allegedly dealt with government efficiency—and, I mean, it’s right there in the fake Cabinet organization’s name—I would point to Social Security as the   beau ideal   of a government program. Not one missed payment. Ever. Praised be FDR and blessed be his name.

Elon Musk has decided the whole system is “a Ponzi scheme.” This, again, is an old conservative talking point that heretofore has been considered largely debunked by the eight decades of success of the program.

Trump wants to redraw the US - Canadian border.

...On those calls, President Trump laid out a long list of grievances he had with the trade relationship between the two countries, including Canada’s protected dairy sector, the difficulty American banks face in doing business in Canada and Canadian consumption taxes that Mr. Trump deems unfair because they make American goods more expensive.

He also brought up something much more fundamental.

He told Mr. Trudeau that he did not believe that the treaty that demarcates the border between the two countries was valid and that he wants to revise the boundary. He offered no further explanation.

What's the point you trying to get at?

If it is that Trump and his crew are nuts and bad for the country (probably for the world), you are too late that point has already been amply demonstrated.

Trump wants to extend citizenship to "any farmer" from South Africa, but experts say he likely can't

President   Donald Trump   announced a proposal to extend citizenship to white   South African   farmers on Friday, citing what he claims is mistreatment at the hands of their government.

“Any Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship. This process will begin immediately!” Trump wrote   in a post   to Truth Social.

But legal experts say Trump alone has no ability to extend citizenship to favored groups.

“This administration has become fixated on using executive orders to try to replace the function of Congress,” Rosanna Berardi, managing partner of an immigration law firm, said in an interview. “To create any type of visa classification… that falls squarely on the shoulders of Congress.”

Exactly. The rightwing white supremacist version of the story is that black South Africans are attacking white farmers. The problem with their story is that there is ZERO evidence that any of the farmer attacks are race based as black farmers were being targeted by these criminal gangs at the same rate as white farmers. But would Trump and these racist douchebags making this offer of welcome to the US and a rapid pathway to Citizenship to any black South African farmer? And why are the farmers being targeted and attacked by gangs in South Africa more important to us in America than the farmers in South America being targeted and attacked by gangs? Oh yeah, that's right, our government is now being run by a bigoted white supremacist and son of a man who was at the very least KKK adjacent if not a full-blown member who was actively discriminating against black Americans in his real estate businesses for decades. And the worst part is, he's being supported and empowered by a bunch of disgusting white supremacist thugs who think they're God's gift to this planet and thus can shit on everything and everyone who doesn't look like them, pray like them, love like them or kneel before their fat greasy orange God like they do. Of course, when such disgusting mentally impotent white supremacists hear about the plight of some other white racists on the other side of the planet, they can't help but feel a connection and deep empathy and want to help save those they see as fellow white racists.

they 100% are. But the objection is not only are left wing parties openly celebrating and promoting genocide but the government just passed a race based land  expropriation act to take land from white farmers.   Those sort of racist, apertheid era laws are of course, wildly popular with left wing racists  all over the world.

"Any farmer"...or "any White farmer"?

It's specifically aimed at farmers who are about to have their land seized under the new South African law... which only targets white farmers... so yes, the will be white.

For the record, and without any comment on whether it's a good idea or not, what he wants to offer is "an accelerated pathway to citizenship", not just an automatic US passport.

The South American farmers are not having their land seized through a new racist law.

This is false. Please do provide actual evidence of this, not some opinion from some rightwing media bullshit artist or the white supremacists that regularly frequent their airwaves.

The government has denied Trump’s allegations that it will target land owned by farmers from South Africa’s white minority Afrikaner group, who are descended from Dutch and other European colonial settlers who first came to the country more than 300 years ago.

The South African land law that prompted a Trump executive order is being challenged in court | AP News

Spokesperson for South Africa's Department of International Affairs Chrispin Phiri said it was false that the act enabled "land seizure or confiscation".
"This misrepresentation fuels unwarranted fears ... that white South Africans ... are being targeted," he said.
The expanses of white-owned land in Free State province, dotted with tiny Black settlements like Fateng, illustrate why proponents deem the act necessary.
Fateng's local councillor, Malefetsani Mokoena, 51, spends his days mediating disputes between landowners and Black rural folk who live among them. Tall and wiry, he is usually decked out in the red uniform of his party, the   Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) , which wants to nationalise the country's gold and platinum mines and seize land from white farmers.
"Sometimes the white farmers don't trust me," he told Reuters in the township's three-room brick municipal office. "But when we sit down and negotiate, we can work things out."
One white farmer interviewed by Reuters, Danie Bruwer, confirmed that he and Mokoena were on good terms.
If a farmer has a sheep stolen, Mokoena finds the thief to get it back. A Black herder has his cows impounded for trespassing on white-owned land; Mokoena negotiates their release.
And, as with the 15 other farms in his caseload, if what Mokoena calls "farm dwellers" - squatters, legally speaking - face eviction or restrictions on their rights to graze animals, he finds them legal representation.
The mostly white-owned farms around here are among the nearly 26 million hectares - about three quarters of privately-owned land - still in  the hands of whites , who make up 8% of the population. Only 4% of privately-held land is owned by Blacks who are nearly 80% of South Africa's 60-million population.
So, the law gives the government the right to negotiate with farmers, no race is mentioned in the law. Of course, 96% of the farmlands in this region are owned by white farmers that make up 8% of the population while the other 4% of farms are owned by black farmers that make up 80% of the population, so, I guess it's a veritable paradise for Trump supporters, exactly what they were looking for! But don't worry, Trump and his sycophants will come running to the rescue of their white brethren who are being so unfairly treated! /s
Just when I didn't think I could get any more ashamed of these miserable pissant deplorable scum bag white supremacists, they surprise me once again with their attempt at shaming the ones who have actually been discriminated against for centuries, any black South Africans who resist being hunted down and murdered in the streets for decades. But hey, some white bigot in the States has got your back white farmers in South Africa! Woo Hoo, congratulations, you can all go fuck each other in your swastika decorated rumpus room.

ease do provide actual evidence of this,

Feel free to google Julian Halama, leader of the marxist EFF, and his promise to kill white women. Or Andile Mngxitama, a member of parliament from the third biggest party in the county who did as well

law gives the government the right to negotiate with farmers, no ra

Lol. Here we go. first "it's not happening"

THen dishonest framing  "They just get to negotiate"

Then the justifications for why its really necessary and a good thing it happens.

All on one post. Congrats! usually the progressive cycle takes at  least a week to playout.

The law lets the government expropriate land without compensation.  "I'll take your land for pennies or just take it, your choice" is not negotiation.

Just when I didn't think I could get any more ashamed of these miserable pissant progressives, they find an even more racist policy to support and defend.  There's really no limit to what left wing racists won't excuse.

"Your search - Julian Halama south africa eff - did not match any documents."

I'm sure you meant Julias Malema but your post makes it clear you don't really understand anything about the politics and history in South Africa and are just a reactionary that gets all bent out of shape when you hear about your fellow white people potentially being treated unfairly somewhere. I see you also don't give a fuck about any other races or ethnicities being treated unfairly or you might have mentioned the history of white on black violence that has plagued South Africa for generations. Very telling how the plight of the 8% who own 96% of the farmland but who happen to share a person's skin color are so much more important to some than the plight of the 92% with a different skin color who share 4% of the farmland. So brave of you to stand up and demand justice and fairness now when apparently you remained silent all those years that the white government abused, murdered, imprisoned any who challenged their racist rule while they stole all that farmland in the first place. Where were your demands for justice and fairness then? Or do they only apply if your skin is light enough?

These days, there are a lot of extremely alarming headlines featuring   Donald Trump . At first glance, “Trump’s Own Declaration of Independence” doesn’t seem like one of them.   The   Atlantic   headline   published on Thursday night sounds like a metaphor that could refer to anything from Trump’s attempt to   distance himself   from alleged co-president   Elon Musk   to Canada-related tensions with   King Charles III .

,

As it turns out, it’s a story about Trump trying to seize the   literal   Declaration of Independence because it would look cool in his office.

,

Trump “asked advisers in recent days about moving the Declaration of Independence into the Oval Office, according to people familiar with the conversations who requested anonymity to describe the planning,” Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer report.

,

It seems even sycophantic Trump staffers were dismayed by his desire to remove the original copy of America’s founding document from   public view   — just so it could be displayed alongside his   Diet Coke button   and   framed mug shot   in the Oval Office:

Trump Tries to Pull a Nicolas Cage, Steal the Declaration of Independence
