CNN anchor Brianna Keilar faced a blizzard of backlash for a tweet complaining about Marine guards positioned behind President Joe Biden during his speech — including from Biden's White House.

On Thursday night, the president delivered a speech entitled "The Continued Battle for the Soul of the Nation" that was largely a rebuke of former President Donald Trump and those who support the insurrection that culminated in the attack on the Capitol on January 6.

But during the speech, Keilar objected to the optics of the Marines standing behind Biden at Philadelphia's Independence Hall.

"Whatever you think of this speech the military is supposed to be apolitical. Positioning Marines in uniform behind President Biden for a political speech flies in the face of that. It's wrong when Democrats do it. It's wrong when Republicans do it," Keilar wrote.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates , a sharp-elbowed presence on Twitter, was among the political, media, and other figures who pushed back on Keilar's complaint on the basis that the speech was "not political."

Bates used ostensibly non-opinion CNN stories on the "GOP threats to democracy" as evidence:

Except it's not political. In the same way CNN isn't political but has made the same warnings.

And White House Deputy Press Secretary Chris Meagher wrote that "Democracy is not a partisan or political issue."

White House Director of Digital Strategy Rob Flaherty pushed back on a similar criticism from Steve Portnoy:

Others responded along similar lines, as well as pointing to what they posed were more egregious examples of Trump using military members in such a fashion, while some saw the influence of new CNN chief Chris Licht :

"Whatever you think of this speech the military is supposed to be apolitical. Positioning Marines in uniform behind President Biden for a political speech flies in the face of that.

Calling something "political" implies there are two legitimate sides to the story.  There is no legitimacy to the "MAGA" crowd that worships trump, flocks to his rallies, and invades the US Capitol building.

The media is doing a great disservice to the country by propagating the nonsense that the Trump cult following is normal "politics".

Clearly this was a political speech.  Labor Day marks the beginning of the finale campaigning for the 2022 elections, and Biden didn't confine his remarks to a threat on democracy.  He got the abortion issue in early, covered legislative accomplishments on infrastructure investment, gun-control, prescription drug pricing and climate change.

Biden is flying to PA for three separate trips within on week. He was in Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, Philly yesterday and back to Pittsburg on Labor Day.  Coincidence? Or is PA a battleground state in the midterms?

The staging was purposeful, Independence Hall lit up as the backdrop, the Marine Band on the side, a red carpet from the Hall to the stage and lectern and two sentries flanking the US flag.  The light was either meant to be spooky or foreboding with the camera close-up, he was framed by hellish red lighting.

Of course this was a political speech.

If so, it is at the behest of his handlers.

When I look at Biden, I see a bumbling old man who I feel very sorry for.   I doubt Biden is capable of complex thought.  He never was presidential material, IMO.

I didn't even know Biden was giving a speech because I hadn't seen it advertised in anything I watch or read.  My interests do not revolve around keeping up with US politics 24/7.

From the little bit of info I have read, it seems that the major networks refused to carry this speech because of its political nature.

I wonder how many people, outside of diehard Democrats, watched his speech when it aired live versus how many people will check it out now to use for campaign purposes between now and the November election?

A sentiment shared by many thinking Americans.

As well as some world leaders if some of the news I have read is true.

These days it is so difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Maybe, we need a Disinformation Governance Board....or not.  Definitely, not.

Disinformation Governance Board - Wikipedia The  Disinformation Governance Board  (DGB) was an  advisory board  of the  United States Department of Homeland Security  (DHS), announced on April 27, 2022. The board's stated function is to protect national security by disseminating guidance to DHS agencies on combating  misinformation malinformation , and  disinformation  that threatens the security of the homeland. Specific problem areas mentioned by the DHS include false information propagated by  human smugglers  encouraging migrants to surge to the  Mexico–United States border , as well as Russian-state disinformation on election interference and the  2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine . [1] [2] [3]  On May 18, the board and its working groups were "paused" pending review, and board head  Nina Jankowicz  resigned, as a result of public backlash, mostly from the  political right , although criticism also came from  progressives  and  civil libertarians . [3] [4] [5] [6]  On August 24, 2022, Department of Homeland Security Secretary  Alejandro Mayorkas  disbanded the board. [7]

Maybe not perfect, but way better than what is out there today.

It is difficult to compare yesteryear with today's media bias without more research than I probably ever want to waste my remaining brain cells on.

I did find a research paper with some comparisons of yesteryear and today.

I will cite some of the most current examples in the report of why it is probably foolhardy to place much trust in what we consider mainstream media.

I will note that the Democrats efforts to sway the GOP nomination to a weak candidate that Clinton could most likely defeat resulted in electing Trump.  This year, the Democrats have shown they are slow learners because they are using the same tactic trying to manipulate GOP nominations for the November 2022 election.

Media Literacy, Democracy, and the Challenge of Fake News (uri.edu)

McNair (2018) asserts that fake news “is a discourse about journalistic bias as
much as it is about the fabrication of facts; an attempt to subvert the legitimacy of an
information source who claims to be ‘objective’ but is, in the eye of the accuser, biased
against their side of a particular issue” (p. 25). Media factions now expend a great deal of
energy pointing out the bias and factual errors of the other side. This performs a useful
watchdog function, although in an already segmented media environment, it also
contributes to political polarization while eroding public trust in the media, which
according to Gallup (2016), has been steadily falling for the past 40 years. Corrections or
refutations are also now less likely to penetrate deeply into public consciousness partly
because of ideological segmentation (meaning that those who would most likely be
enlightened by the information are least likely to receive it), but also because of the
volume of information now available to consumers, which tends to overwhelm any sense
of coherency that would connect one story to subsequent ones. Self-selection of media
sources and motivated reasoning, or the selection of evidence from news to support
existing beliefs and rejecting information that may counter one’s beliefs further
exacerbates the issue of fake news (Kahne & Bowyer, 2017). The irony is that within the
relatively open media environment of the Internet, media distortions and lies are often
exposed by alternative media and other groups, yet this only adds to the public perception
that we live in a “post-truth” era dominated by fake news.
Mainstream news organizations also suffered a major blow to credibility during the
U.S. presidential election of 2016 when Wikileaks revealed that many reporters from

mainstream news agencies were working with the Clinton campaign to ensure her victory
over Democrat primary opponent Bernie Sanders. News coverage of the contest often
contained only the slightest pretense of neutrality. In one example of slanted coverage, a
review of approximately 200 editorials and op-eds in the Washington Post from January to
June 2016 found 5 negative stories for every positive one on Sanders. By comparison,
stories on Clinton were split about half positive, half negative (see Frank, 2018).
Wikileaks also revealed that the Clinton campaign was working with their allies in
the media to bolster what they perceived as the most vulnerable Republican candidates:
Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump (Debenedetti, 2016). When Trump won the
Republican nomination for president, the press quickly turned on him and showed blatant
favoritism for Clinton. This may have created a backlash from some voters, though it
certainly provided the rhetorical space for Trump to take an oppositional stance to the
media and label them as fake news, at least in a way that was convincing to his staunchest
supporters, who were already disgruntled with the media coverage of Trump during the
election season. This is not meant to provide a justification for Trump’s attacks on the
media. Rather, it is to assert that understanding our current media environment requires
considering how mainstream media has lost credibility with many citizens for reasons that
must be confronted if media is to serve its ideal role as informer of citizens and watchdog
of the powerful.
Within these media and social contexts, the increased reliance and role of citizens
to encounter and spread news through social media presents new challenges for
democracy and media literacy.

A large majority of journalists say they come across misinformation at least sometimes when they are working on a story, and while most say they are confident in their ability to recognize it, about a quarter of reporting journalists (26%) say they have unknowingly reported on a story that was later found to contain false information.

Great story. Let’s hand select a few cherry picked  tweets from anonymous people and pretend they represent a popular opinion, and not the talking points of the professional left.

You can almost see the attempt to manipulate reality jump off the page and smell the desperation.  All you need to know about the speech was that msnbc and cnn moved off it fairly Quickly while fox kept is as the primary story.

The only people defending the speech and the possibly illegal politicization of the marines are the kool aid drinkers who would insult their own mothers if a democrat told them too. They have no shame.

Even Biden is walking back what he said.
