Donald Trump's repugnant record is MIA at the RNC

Dan Rather

At their convention in Milwaukee, Republicans see themselves as celebrating what they are convinced is going to be not only a win in November, but an overwhelming one. Among delegates and others on the convention floor and around the hall, there is much chatter about an "avalanche" building.

This, as they have nominated for president a man who tried to overthrow our government.

Their hope is that a majority of voters will simply forget all Donald Trump has done to help himself and hurt this country. That strikes many Americans as falling in the narrow space between revolting and appalling.

And my goodness, the lies are flying fast and furious at the Republican fantasy convention. This glitzed-up affair is full of speeches that don't even come close to the truth. Here's how bad it is: Some major news organizations (although unfortunately not all) are fact-checking the speeches live, calling out the lies in real time.

But it's more than that. Republicans must believe Americans are in a mood to forgive and forget. To forgive the insurrection of January 6 and forget the fact that the former president kept top-secret documents strewn about Mar-a-Lago like last month's junk mail, among many other indiscretions.

How much airtime and how many column inches will be devoted this week to what the previous president has done to harm our democracy? My guess is almost none. Instead there will be a celebration, one devoid of context. It will be an anointing without proper perspective and analysis. And there will be misleading speech after misleading speech.

Tip of the Stetson to The Washington Post and The New York Times, whose fact-checkers are calling out a myriad of false claims. MSNBC is doing the same in real time. CNN is airing a fact-checking segment after the convention coverage. Unsurprisingly, Fox "News" is airing live speeches unchallenged and unchecked.

So far, the speeches have been riddled with stunning yet emphatically stated lies. Trump, the liar-in-chief, is getting a run for his money in the telling of tales. Over two days, the Post's fact-checkers have found that convention speakers have made false claims about border crossings, gas prices, fentanyl, tax cuts, Vice President Kamala Harris, peace during Trump's presidency, voting by migrants, energy independence, the relative wealth of young Americans, and Easter Sunday.

The lies and misinformation are meant to rile and to scare. Texas Senator Ted Cruz actually said this out loud from the convention podium: "Americans are dying, murdered, assaulted, raped by illegal immigrants that the Democrats have released."

And then there's the old chestnut, election denialism. According to the Post, 62 convention speakers have previously questioned President Biden's 2020 election win.

Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis have capitulated, forgiving Trump for his miserable and untruthful treatment of them when they were running against him. They both gave speeches endorsing him on Tuesday night.

And don't forget House Speaker Mike Johnson's claim that the Republican Party is "the law and order team," as it nominates a convicted felon.

It is no secret that the political nominating conventions lost their significance decades ago. Today, they are nothing more than hour upon hour of campaign advertising, which makes them a great place to court undecided voters. This MAGA convention will be hard-pressed to appeal to middle-of-the-roaders. Republicans can no longer claim to be the party of Lincoln or even of Reagan. It is wholly the party of Trump and his MAGA extremist followers. Their newly anointed vice presidential candidate, JD Vance, is even more extreme on issues like gun control and abortion than Trump.

Vance and the convention speakers are talking some about America's need for unity, and that's good, if they actually mean it. But after only two days, they seem to have abandoned the calls for unity and reverted back to the MAGA talking points. Against the backdrop of Republicans celebrating in Milwaukee, let's hope that most of the rest of the country gives itself a gut check on Trump's record and the reality of what his victory in November would mean.

Reminds me of the early 2010's , when two thirds of Republicans believed Barack Obama wasnt born in America.

I stopped watching conventions years ago when I realized they were nothing more than cheerleading competitions for the game of who wins the presidency.  Nothing but exaggerations,  misinformation and coming together to beat the other guys.  If anyone is expecting anything other than that they are either naive or willfully ignorant

Lora Kelley:   How has the assassination attempt shaped the mood of the RNC?

Mark Leibovich:   People are definitely jarred by it. But now that a few days have passed since the shooting, there’s a sense of divine intervention, like Trump has been touched by God. This seems to have stoked an almost spiritual allegiance to him.

Donald Trump's Chances of Winning Election Are Declining:

Donald Trump's Chances of Winning Election Are Declining

Story by Martha McHardy

July 15, 2024

Donald Trump's chances of winning the November 2024 presidential election are declining, according to a new aggregation of polls.

FiveThirtyEight's poll tracker, which was originally published on July 8 and updated on July 16, shows Joe Biden with a 53 percent chance of winning the election, while Trump has a 46 percent chance.

According to the tracker, Biden is favored to win in 534 out of 1,000 of FiveThirtyEight's simulations of how the election could go, while Trump wins in 462. The poll also shows that the simulations indicate that Biden is on track for a three-point win.

The polling website said its forecast is based on a combination of polls and campaign "fundamentals," such as economic conditions, state partisanship and incumbency.

It comes after a Presidential Voting Intention poll of 3,601 swing state voters by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, found that Trump's margins over President  Joe Biden  have narrowed since June in two key swing states: Florida and North Carolina.

Trump previously defeated Biden in both states in 2020, while he held a six-point lead over Biden in Florida in a Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll from that June.

However, he now  only leads the current president by four points in Florida . The poll shows that 45 percent of participants plan to vote for Trump, compared to Biden's 41 percent.

It is not the only recent poll to give Trump only a four-point lead in Florida. A June  Fox News  survey gave Trump 50 percent of the vote, compared to 46 percent for Biden.

However, poll aggregator Race to the White House has Trump on average 7.2 points ahead of Biden in the state, with Biden at 41.9 percent and Trump at 49.1 percent, while the FiveThirtyEight poll shows Biden has a 50 percent chance of winning in the state compare to Biden's 45.

Meanwhile, Trump's margin is also narrowing in North Carolina, where he had a three-point lead over Biden in June. According to Redfield & Wilton Strategies' poll, his lead was slashed to only two points, with 44 percent of those polled saying they would vote for Trump, compared to Biden's 42 percent.

When a person or persons show you the same reprobate mind . . . even after lying about changing ( for a mere few days). . . go on. . . believe them this time: And don't ever forget it!

This NEXT time there will be no pretend 'sorry' issued by Donald/Trumpists for what they are 'bout to do! Even that banner on the wall delineates we did it "Once' - implying they can do the similar things again!

Kamala Harris challenged JD Vance to three debates today.   Vance declined, saying that Harris might not even be the eventual VP candidate.

The real reason is that Harris would pounce on the fact that Vance is on record saying he would like to end all abortion.  Something like 75% of Americans are in favor of choice until late in the pregnancy.

observing the music played as Trump entered the hall

Here is a partial list of the musicians who have objected to Trump using their music at his rallies:

Adele, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eddy Grant, Elton John, the estate of George Harrison, the family of Isaac Hayes and co-writer David Porter, the estate of Leonard Cohen, the family of Luciano Pavarotti, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne, Pharrell Williams, Phil Collins, the estate of Prince, Queen, R.E.M., Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, the family of Tom Petty, the Village People.

Some either threatened or initiated legal action.

Trump, well-known for his total disregard for law and order, defied a cease and desist order from John Fogerty over the use of "Fortunate Son".

Trump was using George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun" to which the family strenuously objected, although they did say they would consider allowing him to use "Beware of Darkness".

The estate of Leonard Cohen objected to Trump's unauthorized use of "Hallelujah", but said they would consider approving use of "You Want It Darker".

Ohio Senator J.D. Vance: Keep Fighting Abortion, “Giving Up on the Unborn is Not an Option”

Opinion   |   Senator J.D. Vance   |   Nov 10, 2023

There is something sociopathic about a political movement that tells young women (and men) that it is liberating to murder their own children. So let’s keep fighting for our country’s children, and let’s find a way to win.

The convention speech that best illustrates the GOP approach to justice

Reality TV star Savannah Chrisley took to the stage at the Republican convention to equate her parents’ convictions to Donald Trump’s.

July 18, 20 24

For all of the somber invocation of the Republican Party’s loyalty to law enforcement and respect for traditional American institutions, Chrisley’s presence on the stage laid bare the self-serving nature of the GOP’s rhetoric about prosecutions. Republicans believe deeply in the rule of law as it applies to protesters on college campuses, Hunter Biden’s gun charges and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.).

But when the criminality is for things like fraud or tax evasion or spiriting classified material off to your home, the system is rigged against conservatives.  Defund the IRS ! Defund the FBI!

Chrisley’s speech was aimed at reinforcing the idea that prosecutors were targeting the right unfairly. The sleight of hand about timing and venue was merely a mechanism for making that case. But it was a useful speech because it formally established the legal boundaries that Republicans respect: those around people they don’t like. This is, in fact, what Trump intends to bring back to the White House .

It's 'amazing' (not really) to see how Trumpists "whine" and then expect to 'dine' at the expense of decency and rule of law.

“We in the Republican Party are the law and order team,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said from the lectern. “We always have been and we always will be the advocates for the rule of law.”

Well, not always always.

Yes, I do. Because as we can all see they are seriously meddling in the deepest affairs (bowels) of liberalism/liberals, so much so until we can't look away from where their 'knife' will score next!

I'm one who can only imagine what my youth could have been like, and my old age too, had it not been for a conservative stranglehold on this country from its inception. I have only recently gotten clear-minded (watching change happen) on the subject to look back over the times in this country and realize just what a hold conservatives possessed over the minds and hearts of people.

It is no 'wonder' that they think they are losing something that belongs to them as a possession: Because, even when we didn't think of ourselves as 'belongings' we were 'possessed" by them through the times themselves.

And it's has similarities to the 'predicament' for girls and women. Trumpists literally want to rule over you; they want to remove your power, a female's ability to see beyond simple measures. Where you are weak, just because males are strong.

It was quite a revelation to realize how concentrated the past is over us. But on a positive note, our society has enlightened itself into power (for all) and we should not let any group put a(nother) 'glamour' on us.

Make America Great Again should mean as it moves forward for all its diverse, inclusive, people—not a regression to a period when one group's social dynamic was thought to be 'perfected' by keeping females, homosexuals, and races in their 'starting' blocks. Nor should it mean that a liberal must be COMPELLED to become a conservative (of some type/kind) just to be understood. . .and have a measure of success in a shared (mutual) society.
