  • When Trump tapped JD Vance as his running mate, the Ohioan's background was a major selling point.
  • But new CNN data shows Vance with a double-digit net unfavorable rating across the Midwest.
  • Vance's national rollout as the GOP vice presidential nominee has so far been a rocky affair.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance's national introduction as former President Donald Trump's running mate has been less than ideal.

Vance, known for his best-selling memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," was elected to office less than two years ago. Many Republicans have long viewed him as a future face of the party, given his Midwestern background and his appeal to many MAGA adherents.

But on the heels of a CNN analysis that showed Vance was the least-liked non-incumbent vice-presidential nominee in at least 44 years, the network also revealed that the GOP lawmaker has a double-digit unfavorable rating with voters across the Midwest.

According to CNN, Vance had a 28% favorable rating and a 44% unfavorable rating — or a minus 16-point favorability rating — among voters surveyed in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin in July.

For Republicans banking on Vance to help boost the party across the Midwest, his standing is far below where he'll need to be in order to win over swing voters in key states like Michigan and Wisconsin.

CNN data reporter Harry Enten during an appearance last week also pointed to data showing that Vance had a minus 5-point favorability rating after the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

"The people who know him best, the region that knows him best, they like him even less than America likes him," he told the network's Erin Burnett.

If JD Vance's popularity in his home region (-16 pts) is any sign, it won't get better for Vance nationally (where he's historically unpopular).
Also, Vance's favorable rating is just 5% with undecideds (i.e. not for Harris/Trump) in the prez race. His unfavorable rating is 29%. pic.twitter.com/WmDhN1vchl

Vance is still early in his political career, but the Trump campaign needs him to move the needle now.

Even in GOP-leaning Ohio, Vance vastly underperformed other statewide Republicans on the ballot during his 2022 Senate race.

While Republican Gov. Mike DeWine won reelection by 25 points that year, Vance defeated his opponent — then-Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan — by only 6 percentage points.

Democrats have needled Republicans over Vance's selection, arguing that his views on issues like abortion will repel female voters. But Trump has so far stood behind his vice-presidential pick.

Focus on the VP. Keep pushing lies. You've already got  Blueanon to believe them and they now spend all their time obsessing about his sex life. Vice Presidents are the key to victory. It's well known.

I've seeded 4 or 5 articles on Vance and none of them are about his sex life.

Find somewhere else to whine about liberals.

What do you think his chances of re-election are if he's voted in as VP? I'm taking bets

The gop has taken the good decent people of America's Heartland for granted way too long.

They need healthcare, they get pregnant, they need good jobs, better pay and benefits, too...

MAGA Madness & Meanness is not cool folks!

And just consider the great set of people on Harris' short-list.    IMO there are some who are better choices than others, but other than picking another woman (too much for now)  or picking Buttigieg (who I would support for PotUS but I doubt the nation is ready for a gay VP or PotUS), Harris is almost guaranteed to have a very solid VP candidate.

I would like to see Tim Walz but would be happy with Josh Shapiro.   Lower on the list is Mark Kelly (but a great aid with the DNC's immigration vulnerability).

This is what the Ds have.

The GOP is stuck with Trump and Vance.

And he would be a great choice.   It would be a solid ticket on merit and would also greatly help in the electoral college.

He is a great guy and would help with the immigration issue (both campaign and resolution).   But he does not bring the executive experience that a governor would bring and his state does not offer the electoral advantage of a state like PA.

Being an astronaut certainly is a great touch for the more superficial voters.

Either is safe heartbeats away from the Presidency. Is Vance?

Vance would serve as Trump's Anti-Impeachment Insurance...

It appears that that Kamala is limited to choosing a unknown White male as VP. It's kinda late in the game to be trying to sell this replacement to the voters. And then there is her own terrible record that she is not likely to be able to live down.

What an odd way to describe her situation.    For example, if she chooses Josh Shapiro she brings an experienced, charismatic governor to the race.   She has several excellent choices available to her and somehow you perceive this as a negative.   Of course.

Whatever you consider to be her "terrible record" you somehow consider it to be more negative than a vindictive, loose-cannon, pathological liar, narcissist con-man who is a convicted felon and the only PotUS in our history to use fraud, coercion, lying, and incitement in an attempt to steal a presidential election.   More negative than an irresponsible clown downplaying an emerging pandemic rather than taking immediate action in a failed attempt to maintain the stock market and the perception that he is a godlike creature capable of magically producing a great economy.

How anyone can be considered worse for this nation than the half-wit scoundrel Trump is amazing.

Happily not everyone shares your fantastic perception of reality.

As much as I would like to see Josh Shapiro as VP, the choice might cost the Dems Michigan and a lot of people who are ignorant enough to protest in favour of Hamas.

What does Josh Shapiro have to do with Michigan?   If governor Whitmer is VP, that could cost the Ds the election by running a female only team.   Too much change all at once is not a good idea.

I agree that it's too soon for an all-female team, if ever, but my point was that he was Jewish and Michigan has a big Muslim population.
